New Shop Underway!

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

I wouldn’t know what to do with those ceilings. I’d literally get nothing done as I’d stare off into what I would consider the upper atmosphere of space. 😉

One of my ideas for a new shop is a 14×28 shed with a garage door and a side door. A couple of Windows and a special place for what would be my Sawstop. You know, the one in my head. It’ll happen at some point but having the shop in a “finished” way has been a real dream. Just getting to work with hardwoods that have been curing for over a year while waiting for this to get done is awesome.

Great work Chris,, looks awesome

Got lots done today……

1 pen in Purple Heart, 1 pen in African Mahogany, 1 small butcher block completed in Tiger Maple and Cherry, 1 large butcher block in Tiger Maple and Black Walnut (glued, ready to be planed then cross cut and re assembled)…

krutonMember since Jun 2015

Dude I’m digging the purple heart pen! When they go into production let me know, I need a ChrisK original! Nice work bro, the shop looks awesome and you do great work. Really makes me want to get a woodshop setup. I am slowly trying to buy the main pieces. Miter saw is next on the list, followed by a good table saw. Keep posting pics man. Guys like you and comp keep me motivated.

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Very very awesome bro I’m very happy to see how great your shop came together and your not even done yet!

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Thanks a lot guys! I’ve been getting a lot done down there too. I’m currently working on what will be a saddle and tack chest for my wife. I have been trying to make a cut list but we will see, here’s a sketch…..

comp56Member since Sep 2014

that is so awesome Chris, such a great feeling being able to get some stuff done in the shop instead of just working on the shop….

Thank you Comp. I am really plugging away now too. I started an advanced woodworking class so I can learn some mortise and tenon as well as hand cut dovetailing so with this project I am designing my shop is going to be well coated with sawdust. Though the dust deputy is working out quite nicely.

Being I posted the other ones here, I just finished the last of the batch of cutting boards. I made this one for my Wife to go with her pen. This one is Tiger Maple,Cherry and Black Walnut.

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Beautiful work there Chris, I got a challenge for you, I was given a cutting board for Christmas a few years back and it was designed for meat cutting where it collects the juices on the sides and sends it to a larger spot until you can dump it, pretty cool if you could do something like that.

Not a bad idea Jimbo, I’ll try it on my next one. I’ll try it on a non end grain board like this one as I’m a little nervous about getting the juice pooling in the grains. My Wife is going to use this one as a serving platter and hot plate. She’s on the way home now and she’s been really excited about getting this one as I got all of the other ones down and out to their owners. I’m going to make one a little bit smaller than this one and I will try to incorporate that channel in it!

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Good luck man I’m sure it’ll look awesome!

Zach, I believe curly maple and tiger maple are different variations of the grain patterns. This particular pattern is called tiger maple but really Zach…..tomatoes – to-h-mahtoes….;)

nice stuff are you buying pen blanks or stealing them from old pens?

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Thanks Comp, they are Atlas kits. This one was kind of interesting in the finish. I screwed it up with CA glue and then was able to salvage it with some heavy sanding and then a wet 1500 finish

comp56Member since Sep 2014

nice  I’m looking for some CA glue is there any word on large bottles? I can only find small bottles

Here’s number two….comp, I’m using the smaller sized bottles I will get the exact size in a few but they come in two sizes from Woodcraft. Zach, I’m getting my kits from Woodcraft, we have one just down the road. My first one today was zebra woof but it shattered,

Holy crap Chris! How have I been missing out on this thread?! Love your shop and hope to have a setup similar in the future!

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Sorry Comp, feel asleep. Mine is 4oz. and comes up to 10oz. I haven’t used too much as these last two pens were #3 and #4 though two of them were sealed with the CA. At the rate I’m going I’ll probably get 20 or so pens out of this (guess but based on how far this goes even as a sealer). I’m not sure if I’d go larger for my purposes as I’m afraid it’ll not seal properly and I will end up with waste.

Just manufactured a new Auxiliary fence for the Kapex. Tried it out with an old 2×4 and came out gorgeous. The wood is spalted maple (I found a finished piece at Lowes!!!! $5!!!!! Gorgeous piece and I’ll put a finish on it cause my Kapex is pretty and she deserves shiny baubles.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

nice looking auxiliary fence  for 5 bucks

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Yeah. That’s one pretty fence! I can’t believe I found that board. Beautiful figuring to it.
