New Shop Underway!

Man Chris it’s looking good bro it’s really came along way man.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Thanks guys! Today I didn’t do too much but I used my Domino to make a couple of quick ha gets for a few small hand measuring things. It took a piece of warped wood that was used to ship my Festool 106″ track that came in the other day. After spending some time chopping the wood to roughly equal lengths and thickness, I used my Kapex to cut a dado into five inch length that I is going to secure the blade of one of my Woodpecker squares. Tomorrow I’ll paint the hangers.

I’ve been watching some of Jimmy Diresta’s builds and he is making me want a Domino in a bad way!

Kruton….coolest tool ever. Absolutely awesome machine. I’ve got five different bits for a variety of dimensions. They have the XL also but way too big for me right now but a small company, Seneca, came out with a mod for the XL that allows you to use the smaller bits giving it a huge range. But the XL as its name implies is freakin’ huge. The big thing with the Domino is you really need some type of DC be it a Festool vac or whatever as it cuts through the wood leaving a lot of wood chips in the mortise as it cuts. This naturally needs to be sucked out as it cuts as it can slow and dull the blade.

I can see where it would be really handy. This may be my first Festool because I really want to try one out. I haven’t looked much into the DC units, but had looked a little at the Fein Turbo II. Any recommendations there? I haven’t really compared any other brands in terms of price, function or features.

Great set up. Some top end tools.

Been looking at Festool drills and seriously considering it. I just wonder if it would really make that huge of a difference over DeWalt,Milwaukee and Makita which are my main products.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Hey guys, a quick update. I took a break to be with my buddy Rufus and had not been in the shop for quite a while. Anyways, the last week has been pretty eventful for me. I added some more wall space, painted and moved the Kapex back to where I originally had it before I started slapping up walls. Any ways, here is a couple of quick pics I took before painting….

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

I know it doesn’t look like much but there is a lot going on down there right now which will culminate with my new bandsaw. It hasn’t left the bulkhead stairs since I got it down there on Friday. There isn’t room to sneeze down there so far but it’s coming along nicely now. I can’t wait to get down there tomorrow when I get off duty and start hammering way. I will be adding some cabinets after the bandsaw is built too…

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Really looking good Chris,,,,,

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Thanks guys! I’ll post some more soon. I took last night off (after I wired in my last outlet) but am going to be down there all afternoon. I’m hoping to set up my plywood cutting table in a more convenient area in the shop plus I finished up the trim the night before last. Today the plan is to stop by HD and get some more casters for my DW745 cart that are bigger plus some more 1″ trim for my cutting table.

NERemodelingMember since Aug 2014

The shop is really coming along nicely man! I like what you have done

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Thanks a lot John. I just finished a couple of small carcasses with French cleats up on the long wall. I’ll end up building a couple more but it’s coming out great!

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Well after much anticipation….from me….I FINALLY got my new Rikon 10-325 14″ bandsaw assembled. What a PITA!!!!!!! This thing is a beast! Can’t wait to resaw!

I had to take it out of my truck, assemble and then put the band saw on the steel frame. By myself 285lbs. My back is killing me. Thank God for this little ratcheting driver I found in a Dodge Magnum I had purchased several years ago. Without it, I’d still be down there trying to assemble the table.

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Wow bro that’s really nice it’s huge man!! Can’t wait to c what u build with this beast chrisk

NERemodelingMember since Aug 2014

Dude, that bandsaw is serious!! Very very nice my man!!

Poisonfangs85Member since Feb 2015

That thing is wicked! 285 down to the shop alone that sucks, but it looks awesome bro.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Thanks guys! It’s coming along quick now. Yeah this is a really sweet saw and was had at a great price. I dropped 7 bones on it from its original price of nearly a grand.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

sweet looking rig ya got there…..just remember with a band saw set up is key.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

I’m going to try to post some pics today of the shop. It’s been quite the ride but things have shaped up nicely. It started over a year ago when I began the move over to the current location. Interestingly enough, I may be moving it again, to an exterior building which would be sweet but we will have to wait and see……

These first few pictures are of my original shop….

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

That shop had existed in pieces for over six years. My main saw at the time was my Ridgid 10″ non sliding miter saw backed up with a Ryobi 10″ contractor saw. The shop had one decent light and like now, several ceiling mounted outlets. My previous relationship would not allow me to expand or get more embroiled into woodworking and my tools were limited but did me okay. When I met my Wife and she saw my hobby first hand she said “no….you need more space”. So I began the move…..

MillerzconstructionMember since Dec 2015

I see some festool tools!

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Why Zach, yes you do sir, yes you do!

Tomorrow I’ll post part two, with a LOT more Festools 😉

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Wow bro it’s awesome u let us go on this journey in to your updated shop man! And hopefully all goes well for that new exterior shop I know your gonna hook that Bebe up to bro!

if you have a wife that supports you even better…..spend her money…lol

Well……..

And a shop tour video…..

Thanks for following along guys. Im going to register a name for my shop with the State for my best friend Rufus who I lost in September. It was hard getting back down here without the little guy but lately it’s been pretty therapeutic. When I retire in the next three years I want to start putting out some projects and try to get some side business and having a name will help. Not going to post it now till its official.

As far as my Wife supporting my habit…yeah I’m like a heroin addict with my woodshop…I’m one lucky guy. She’s beautiful and she enjoys my projects coming upstairs and into our home as well as sharing them with friends and family. I really am blessed. Happy New Year guys.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

awesome walk thru chris, nice to see the hard work is finally paying off……Happy New Year to you as well…

krutonMember since Jun 2015

Great video brother. My goal someday is to have a dedicated wood shop. I really like yoir setup. Maybe Dan will send you some of those big ass lights to try out!

Great video Chris! I like how you have the bigger tools on mobile carts. Your shop has came a long way man. How big is the first section of the shop?

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Love the tour of the shop bro!! Man it has a came along way and looks great!! U have some really awesome top notch tools in there bro!

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Thanks for the great comments guys. This has been quite the change for this dark dank basement and it’s been pretty fun to go down and work in there. I’m still of the mindset that moving to an outdoor building with heat and AC and a big door for lumber and sheet goods will be in my future but this shop is definitely cutting it for me and I am one blessed guy to have the shop in my home.

I’ve always liked the convenience of a basement shop but Leary of the limiting factors of size of things you can build, good though to just walk downstairs and your in your workshop.

ya my basement shop has an advantage as it not only has stairs to get down but also a ground level private entrance, nice for finished things or full sheets of plywood stock ect ect……only limitation is nothing can be built more than 31.5″ square and I have yet to even come close. tables stands benches ect ect all are built with removable parts

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

This is fun. Absolutely awesome day in the shop. Started a bunch of project. I’m building a Hard Maple auxiliary fence for my Kapex and started two more heavy duty cutting boards, one oth Tiger Maple and Cherry, the other Tiger Maple and Black Walnut.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

It’s awesome having all the tools mounted on casters. The shop is already clear in the main area. The Powermatic 54HH jointer is FRIGGIN’ AWESOME!!!!!! Don’t worry, the fence on my jointer is happy to be receiving the beautiful piece of maple 😀

@NicholasShetley hey Nicholas, I am sorry, I just read your post!

The main area pictured is 11′ wide by 19′ long. That does not include the back portion where the planer and saw and router table plus the lumber break down area. It’s not too large with ceilings well under seven feet but it’s a huge area from what I originally had!

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Nice shop Chris, enjoy that space, I like your table saw stand

sweet jesus that is nice wood your working with love that stuff…..

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

I picked up some great pieces a couple of weeks ago Comp. local Hardwood dealer about thirty minutes away. I wanted to make some 4/4 end grain boards but they’re closed till Monday and I want to get some done so these will be a little smaller but the wood species are just gorgeous. I used Bubinga, Cherry and Tiger Maple on my Mother in Laws board I made her and it’s just beautiful. I love having this shop. It’s so nice being able to work again.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

see I told you all that hard work getting it set up would pay off….ok I may not have told you but I thought it…..

NicholasShetleyMember since Nov 2013

That is bigger than I thought. It looks great Chris! I don’t think I could live with the short ceiling. I’m used to 10ft plus ceilings in our shop. Granted out shop isn’t a wood shop though.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Thanks Nicholas, the short ceilings make maneuvering pieces around…..interesting. Yeah…..interesting. I told my Wife that I will move outdoors once we get a new horse for her. Her turn now! The plan then will be to either get a large shed / garage building or to build one depending on cost. That shop will have open ceilings, maybe some overhead storage but I want to have a couple of ceiling fans to help clear things up and keep things cool. Plus…..interesting isn’t fun when trying to move an 8′ sheet around!

NicholasShetleyMember since Nov 2013

I can imagine that it gets interesting. Our shop is a 30×40 and it has a 14 or 16 foot ceiling if I remember right. It also has a 10 foot overhang. It wasn’t cheap but it was worth it. It was built about 5-6 years ago andirons has already needed a new roof due to a monster hailstorm a while back.
