We have seen the run flat technology on skid steers for years and recently on a Polaris ATV. It will be just a matter of time before all wheels go airless. John Deere and Michelin have introduced the Tweel. Say goodby to flats. The only bad thing I can see about this technology is the cost to replace the Tweel when it wears out. I wonder what the price is going to end up being on these.
One downside is going to be that you cannot fill them with liquid like a pneumatic tire for added weight and stability. I fill all of my mower tires with windshield washer fluid & it makes the ride much smoother and they dont spin/get stuck when on wet grass or going up hills.
You can also put anti-freeze in tires. A lot of 4×4 people who have bigger tires than 38′ but drive on the road put it in their tires to help balance them.
Cool technology for sure I seen the Tweel for years saying its the next big thing and nothing happned with it. The only thing is couldn’t John Deer pick some better music for their promo video that not compelling music at all!! Its not like JD is poor either pick better music or license some music next time 🙂
I’ve seen this type of wheel before, and the awesome honeycomb design used in the military. Now, here’s the question: Why are we not adopting this technology as a standard for cars and trucks? If you think about it, the current tire is inherently dangerous. A piece of rubber, full of air, and a blowout at 80 usually ends badly. If a company figures out how to make these affordable, and offer them for passenger cars and trucks, I don’t know about you guys, but i’m in for a set.
