Making progress over the weekend.

Used the Porter Cable 20V Oscillating tool to remove the tar paper / felt from the floor on Saturday. That task absolutely sucked. Sitting on the floor for a couple of hours and then getting up was tough. My hips were killing me. lol

Once that was done, I put down 1/4′ HardiBacker board down in preparation for the tile floor. Also put up the lighting that my wife had picked out. Looks pretty good, Just need to work on tweaking the aiming of the heads once we get the table in there. Working in there gave me a opportunity to try out the Bluetooth speaker that I got for Christmas. That little speaker is awesome and it has about 3 hours of run time.

Thanks everyone.

Yes, it’s starting to take shape finally. Doesn’t seem like I’ve been working on it for 2 months.

Going to try to get the floor down this weekend. I was planning my first snowmobiling trip for this weekend, but the way the weather has been in the northeast, it’s not happening.

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Can’t believe it’s been 2 months, looks good man, I’m sure you’ll be happy when it’s done

Sun Room has taken a back seat for the past 3 weeks. I’m in the middle of snowmobiling season and I spent a couple weekends in New Hampshire.

Back to reality and a change of plans regarding the flooring. Originally we were going to install plank tile in the room, But, I have too much bounce in the floor and I’m very concerned due to the lack of rigidity we’ll end up with cracked tile due to the length of the tiles (6″ x 36″). There’s no access to the floor underneath to add support to the joists.

We started looking at alternate flooring and I believe we came up with a pretty good compromise that’s going to end up with the same finished product. We’re going with a vinyl version of plank with the same finish and style of the ceramic that we were originally looking at. Material was ordered today, so with any luck I may end up putting the floor down next weekend.

Love the color of the flooring, that’ll look very nice.

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

Today was flooring day.

We decided to go with TrafficMaster’s Allure Plus 5″x36″ vinyl plank flooring. Installation couldn’t have been easier, All you need is a utility knife, tin snips and a speed square to install it. We did the entire floor in about 2 hours. Love the look and it was a good compromise from the tile flooring that we were originally looking at. We like it so much, that we’ve decided to continue the flooring into the kitchen.

Now it’s just down to installing the base boards, thresholds and some final paint work.

My daughter had a snow day today so I took advantage of it.

Painted the door and lockset on the bathroom door and installed the baseboards. I’m going to need to install some shoe molding to hide some of the height differences and crowning on the floor. After seeing this, I’m glad we decided to abandon the plank tile.

In the homestretch now.

Yes, I screwed that up. I had a brainfart when I set the box. I just eye balled it and it came back to haunt me

I’ve already cut the plate so it fits. I’m just waiting for the paInt on it to dry. I painted it the same color as the door hardware so it matches. I need to change the outlet as well. It’s currently almond but it needs to be white.

Probably have about half a day left between the paint and the other items before we can call it done. Just finished the shoe molding about an hour ago.

Usually 17 inches center of the box from the floor for outlets and 48 center of box for switches. I do see them all over the place on older homes. It has been fun following your project sad to see it almost done, I’m sure your happy that its almost done..lol

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Justin my favorite is when you drywall a room and the outlets are all on different measurements lol, that would drive me nuts! Talk about mucking up a DIY job.

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

That box will fit in with the rest of the house. I think the electrician who originally wired the house hated children since most of the switches are 60″ or more from the floor and the outlets are all over the place. Lol

Really looks good, I know what you mean. My old house has outlets all over the place from 8″ – 18″ and my baseboards are 10″ so yeah had to get creative with the cuts lol. Like the way the colors play against one another. Thanks for sharing.

Haha, that’s because you’re supposed to buy the DeWalt 12 volt laser Dan and Eric just review to set your outlet boxes. 🙂

I think I’m ready to call this project done. Spent today doing all of the final paint, threshold in the bathroom and installing cordless cellular shades. The shades were expensive, $215, I almost choked at the register when I bought them. Only thing that’s left is to order the table and continue the flooring into the kitchen, (That’s the reason for the painters tape and wax paper it’s covering the adhesive strip).

Thanks to the crew for all of the advice and kind words. It’s been great to have everyone’s feedback as I worked through it.

Yes, when the total came up I thought they scanned in too many. It’s crazy what they charge for these things. My wife likes them so I told her happy Valentine’s Day. Lol

Man from the beginning to the end what a transformation 99 very awesome work bro!!

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

Thanks Mike! It was a good winter project.

Now I can collect all the tools that have been laying around in the entryway and put them back into the garage. LOL

comp56Member since Sep 2014

ya it’s funny how while you are doing the job tools can be left all around but the minute the job is declared finished, tools are no longer allowed in the area……..its like they are shunned…..

Justin HernandezMember since Apr 2015

Its true all good things must come to an end, its like I watched the room grow up now its off to college..lol Looks great 99!! maybe keep us up to date with the rest of the flooring

overanalyzeMember since Oct 2011

Just read through this topic. Nice job!! What a huge transformation. I like the shelf detail you did. Fits well with the space.

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

Will do on the flooring.

We’ve decided to paint the kitchen before we put the flooring down. No sense worrying about paint splatter if we don’t have too. So I’ll be prepping the space on Saturday and hopefully be painting by Sunday. The kitchen is going to be a PIA. since there are 6 doors and 2 windows along with the cabinets. Wood work is all stained and will not be painted. So needless to say lot of taping and cutting in will be done.

I’m not looking forward to it. 🙂

As far as the tools. The mess has been transplanted into the garage. Nothing has been put away yet. I need a bigger garage. lol

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

The past 5 weeks have been busy since we decided to continue into the kitchen with the flooring. We also painted the kitchen as well. I think we spent more time on prep and atoning for my previous DIY sins in this room than actual painting the room.

I believe we finally achieved the 100% completion mark on this project. Even managed to score a almost perfect pub table from CL for $275 and had our first meal in the sunroom tonight. It felt pretty good to sit in the leather chairs and eat some leftover pizza. 🙂

That’s a lot of work especially since you’re living in it as well with a family. I would dread to think of gutting my kitchen now that I have a family, when it was just me, I was cool washing dishes in the bathroom sink lol while I worked in the kitchen. But as you know its worth it (I hope it was to you)
