My last vacation over summer I gutted a dining room, busted my nuts for 7 days working harder than I do at full time job lol. But hey we get to play with power tools and have fun with it so why not?!

I had more fun working on this though. It gives a chance to think and use my brain

Sometime sitting at my desk in my office dealing with IT issues all days can drive you insane.

Finished off the filling and sanded this morning and slapped some primer on the walls. In the past I used the oil based KILZ for drywall and the stuff really stinks up the house. This time I used their water based PVA for new drywall. It went on pretty easily and I had pretty good coverage and best of all no stink!

Anyway, the walls are done until we decide on the final color. Going to paint the ceiling next weekend and try to start working on the installing the trim. Not sure how much I’m going to get done. We’re supposed to go cut our Christmas tree down.

trim work my favorite, cause ya know you are close to the finish…..

Justin HernandezMember since Apr 2015

Its coming along quite nice, yea you should stay away from oil based products. Water based latex products are so far advanced now theirs no reason to use anything else, you might need to use an old based primer on walls with permanent marker all over it. Also on certain outdoor decks might require an oil base but thats about it.

Thanks everyone. Now all of the fun stuff starts and of course as always this project is turning into something bigger. As we were looking at tile this past weekend my wife now wants to continue the tile floor into the kitchen.

We will see what happens. With Christmas, the heating season and snowmobiling starting. Time and money are going to be limited and I really don’t want to tear the kitchen apart. 🙂

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

Not too much progress this weekend due to having to work on Saturday morning and then going to cut the Christmas tree down.

On Sunday I painted the ceiling and then put the heating register back together and fastened it to the wall. Once that was done I went around the room cleaning up the window casings and door jambs of old layers of paint so the finish trim will sit flat.

Have some time off from work coming up. Plan on finalizing the wall color and then start putting the trim up.

NIIICE!!!!

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

Broke out the finish nailer today and made a lot of progress on the windows, doors and installing the shelf.

I also decided to replace the window sills on both. Originally I was going to try to save them, but even after trying to clean them up for a couple of hours. It didn’t make sense on not replacing it when all of the other mill work was going to be new,.

Originally on the shelf I was going to use a couple of rubbed bronze metal brackets for the end.  We changed our minds and I’m going to continue with the trim on for the returns for either side. So that will need to be redone since I originally left an allowance for the brackets on the ends.

Going to hold off on the baseboards until we get the floor in.

We’re looking to tile it. Specifically Plank Tile. I’ve done tiling jobs in my house before but they have been the traditional 10×10’s. With everything that I’ve been reading on the installation of the large format is that the floor needs to be dead flat which is concerning. I’ve checked the floor with my 4′ level and surprising enough it’s fairly level in both directions.

I just need to check for flatness at some point and make sure I don’t have any major dips in the floor. I know I can take out the error once I put the hardibacker down and the thinset. Just want to avoid any major issues if I can.

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Man it looks good bro!!

nail or screw a string right at the wall and straight across very tight both ways to see the dips if any….

Santa’s elves are doing a good job, they should have it done in no time 🙂 What’s the name of the color paint and brand are you using?? I have been wanting to paint my bathrooms in a similar color

Flatness is the key. Don’t mix the two up level and flat. You want your floor flat as possible. Put down some underlayment if you have too. You can get away using your thin set with slight dips. Just don’t try to level the floor using your setting material. I have seen guys try to do this then when they get to the other side they are a inch high or better.  Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

What’s the best way to check for flatness? The room is essentially 12×7.

My thought is to take the 4′ level and make sure it’s level. Once I establish level, I then take a piece of material no thicker 1/8″ and see if I can slide it under the level in various locations on the floor?

Any dips will then be identified right?

regopitMember since Feb 2013

IF you don’t have a 8′ straight a 4′ will do but like comp said a string is all so good or you could spend the money on this. This is what I use.

Justin HernandezMember since Apr 2015

Thanks for getting back so fast with the paint color, it takes me awhile to pick a color. Then I paint the walls and when it dries I’m like that’s not really what I wanted, so I just leave it and paint the room again in a few years..lol  Hey for your tiling you should try the perfect level master t-lock system it does cost some money but it is worth it Home Depot has there own system which is similar and cheaper. Its a 2 part system a spacer and a wedge it will make your tile dead level.

That thing is pretty cool. I could see why you bought it.

If you’re in the Northeast any time soon feel free to swing by and give me a demo. 🙂

Yes, I saw the T-Lock system on some of the videos I watched. Didn’t realize HD had something similar. I’ll go check it out.

No problem on the paint color. Glad I could help.

After taking a good look at your photos you really should put down some type of underlayment the last thing you want to happen is for all of those plank joints to move and transfer to the tile and start to crack. You could use some type of ply. hardy board, or Schluter Ditra. I use the Dita because I don’t want any call backs but before Dita came out everybody used to other methods with very little problems.

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

I was going to put down hardibacker regardless. Then use the leveler if needed.

I imagine you can’t put the leveler over the existing hardwood that’s there now.

regopitMember since Feb 2013

You can it’s best to put it over the backer. It will give you a more stable and solid surface.  Used a mesh tape and thin set on your joints

Some solid advice in this post,I learned something 😉

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

Yes, that’s the best part of the forum. Honest and helpful info with no ego’s to deal with.

I’m going to finish the rest of the trim work once we get through Christmas and then start dealing with the floor over New Years.

99_XC600Member since Jun 2015

Spent Sunday and Monday night finishing the painting on all of the trim. Just have some minor touch up work on the ceiling too do. I also need to pull the bathroom door off and paint that white. Once that’s done, I’ll start devoting time on the floor and installing the light fixture.

We even started to decorate a little bit 🙂

Making progress over the weekend.

Used the Porter Cable 20V Oscillating tool to remove the tar paper / felt from the floor on Saturday. That task absolutely sucked. Sitting on the floor for a couple of hours and then getting up was tough. My hips were killing me. lol

Once that was done, I put down 1/4′ HardiBacker board down in preparation for the tile floor. Also put up the lighting that my wife had picked out. Looks pretty good, Just need to work on tweaking the aiming of the heads once we get the table in there. Working in there gave me a opportunity to try out the Bluetooth speaker that I got for Christmas. That little speaker is awesome and it has about 3 hours of run time.
