I want to add a 3/8″ impact to my line up. I have the 1/2″ impact the 889 model that I plan on swapping out for the new 899 brushless.
Now the question is, the only 20v 3/8″ is the brushed 883 model which I believe is the motor from the 885. It’s cheaper to buy a brushless 886 off of eBay than a 883, has anybody had luck swapping the 1/4″ hex adapter off for a 3/8″ square drive, or should I just be patient and hope that Dewalt comes out with a brushless model?

If everything is the same on the brushless impact driver all you need to do is swap out the 1/4 hex with the 3/8 anvil. Here is a link to the part.

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking.

From memory the internals were not identical, make sure you check the parts diagrams….
If you’re ok with a friction ring instead of a ball detente, you can always take a grinder and file to a 1/2 impact. You could even replace the ball detente if you wanted but that would be a bit more difficult.
Looked everything over, got a 886 coming in eBay and just ordered the 3/8″ drive, if it doesn’t work I’m not out a whole lot of money, I’ll keep you guys posted.

Very interested to see how this works!

Update***
Got the impact and the part in and I was able to swap the chucks. Works like a charm, total cost was just around 100 bucks which isn’t bad for a brushless impact wrench. I haven’t tested it under load yet but there is no play in the chuck, fits like a glove.
Here is pictures of the new Dewalt dcf886b-TIA wrench addition.

That is awesome that it worked. I honestly don’t know why Dewalt doesn’t have brushless versions yet. They have to test the tool out but still its not like they have to have crazy new tooling. Milwaukee has always launched new compact impact wrenches when they released the new Fuel impact driver.

It took me maybe 20 minutes total, hardest part was getting the old adapter off, as much as I love Dewalt they frustrate me by taking their time with brushless tools. Makita and Milwaukee have a awesome line up. As for the compacts I have the m12 fuel impact driver and that things no slouch.

thats awesome
Haha, you could have a small side business now Jimbo. I doubt the margins are worth it though, and the possibility of Dewalt sending lawyers after you.
Looks awesome jimbo!!
nice work. love it.
eReplacement Parts needs to update their compatibility list now. Lol.
Can you do a torque test? Torque bolts with a torque wrench and see if the dewalt will remove. I know a dcf883 will meet its rated torque of 130ft/lbs. I’ve personally tested it.

I’ll see what I can do

Is there a 1/2″ anvil available as I would rarely use a 3/8″ one?

if you’re going to use 1/2″, you might as well get the new dewalt dcf899. it has a ton of power.
[External image (i.imgur.com), not copied]^^^ that’s a totally different class though, much more powerful and much larger/heavier.
The DCF880 is a compact 1/2″ wrench, though not brushless.
I have the 1/2″ 889, planning on upgrading to the 899 but I wanted a 3/8 when I don’t need anything of that caliber.

If you wanted to do the same conversion with a 1/2 anvil you would need this anvil this is the hog ring anvil they also have the pin detent version too if you want to search for it also. It’s 22 dollars from Dewalt might be cheaper at other places.
There is a washer right at the tip of the anvil you would have to look into getting a different one, I don’t think a 1/2″ anvil would fit there.

I’m not sure which washer you would need for the 1/2 inch but they do that them on the exploded diagram.

Oh yeah that is awesome…but I don’t always need 1000 torques in my hand. I seem to find myself using a 1/4 hex to 1/2″ socket adapter in my dcf895… not ideal but gets it done. a dedicated brushless 1/2″ drive 886 would be nice

Torqued some bolts to 150#s as big as my wrench will go, was able to back them out, this puppy has some power to it.

In my video I said 866, it’s the dcf 886, was looking at it you could probably fit a 1/2″ anvil if you desired but for casual use the 3/8″ will work for me, I’ll save the 1/2″ for my big boy.

Yes but it’s the compact frame and l8ghtd weight some of us are looking for. I jamb my cordless impact in some tight spaces
Thanks for the testing!

Yes I hear that, defiantly look into it but just take a look at the exploded view of the impact and see if the 1/2″ could fit, from memory like mentioned above, the only concern I would have is the washer on the head of the anvil but I don’t see why you couldn’t modify it.
i’m curious as to where you guys use or need a 1/2″ drive compact impact.
Any thoughts on whether this Anvil swapout would work on the DCF887? I’ve not had the opportunity to compare the 886 and 887, but they look similar in terms of size? but I don’t have a clue on the internals, they obviously have a speed selector on the 887? but would there be other internal differences?
Thoughts?

Being a mechanical part, its just a matter of tolerances inside the anvil housing, the 887 is a tad stouter than the 886, so there is a slight possibility that it may not fit.
Nice work Jimbo !!
That is sick Jimmy

Is it the the part dr99 said?
Yes

I don’t know why Dewalt has such horrible compact impact wrench choices. When impact drivers and compact impact wrenches are the same tool really.

I ended up selling it for red

I can see why. Milwaukee had better offerings. I could understand Dewalt’s situation if it was a huge undertaking but 95% of the tool is the same from the impact driver. I think Bosch has a brushless compact impact wrench coming out soon. Makita is also lacking in compact impact wrenches. I think Milwaukee offers it up for the mechanics/pipefitters/people that build crap in factories.

Yeah Bosch is coming out with a brushless 12v one and already has out their super dope 18v one that is higher torque than the red one and is just itching to be in my collection if it can beat out the Metabo. I’m just pissed that Kobalt already has announced plans for a brushless grinder and DeWalt has nothing, but that’s why my I’m going green with my arsenal.

Still a nice wrench tho.
