Cordless Tool Trivia

Archived from the Tools In Action forum (Power Tools). This thread is read-only.

dwainMember since Aug 2013

Hey folks,

Just a bit of fun. The person who first answers the question correctly gets to ask the next question. Obviously it doesn’t work if people google the answers. Questions could be about which brand has a certain tool, what the spec of a given tool is, when it was released etc etc. Please bold and underline the formal questions so they stand out from the guesses and OT discussion.

Please restrict your questions to battery tools, and to brands that are available around most of the world to regular people, so that non-US people like myself can get it on the fun. Bosch, Dewalt, Festool, Makita, Metabo, Milwaukee, Hilti, Hitachi, Panasonic etc. Also, please be accomodating of model number differences etc.

First question: Which brand of 18V hammer drill claims the highest maximum torque, and what value?

KnarlyCarlMember since Jan 2016

Nice! hahah Too bad the amount of activity here isn’t what it used to be 🙁   anyways, without doing any research at this point, My guess to this question is the Hilti sf10w-a18 …?? 1062 inch-pounds ??

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

New Metabo drill has around 1300 in lbs

You’re right. Why is that do you think?

Both guesses so far incorrect (though I’m not sure exactly what Metabo you’re referring to, I think Metabo peak at 1062 in-lbs / 120 Nm also).

KnarlyCarlMember since Jan 2016

Makita XPH07M …?? 1090in-lbs ..???

The SB 18 LTX-3 BL Q1

That toolpig was testing is rated at 1062in-lbs. So I’m still wondering what the 1300in-lb drill is all about

Well I could have told you that the Metabo is the best drill on the market, but that’s would just be stating the obvious.

dwainMember since Aug 2013

Well that 1300 in-lbs would be the highest claim when it comes out, but it isn’t the current top.

I’m VERY surprised no one has guess the Milwaukee FUEL, because if you did, you’d be SO SO very close (in torque claim). But still incorrect.

D WMember since Jun 2016

Hitachi 136Nm, not sure of the model. I remember it was promoted on the front page of the Sydney tools website for a few weeks. “Best in class impact driver, impact wrench, and hammer drill….” or something along those lines.

Honestly the marketing of hard joint torque in drills is a load of horse shit, what really matters is soft joint torque.

Totally agree!

But we have a winner, it is the Hitachi at 136Nm, conspicuously just a little above the 135Nm of the FUEL which was already out 😉

D W, the floor is yours.

Which brands hold the top 3 positions for the longest stroke length in 18V reciprocating saws? Tip: 2 are brushless, 1 is brushed.

All 32mm (1.25″)  stroke. Brushless: Makita and Bosch, Brushed: Makita.

BMack37Member since Sep 2015

I actually thought the new Makita had a longer stroke than 1.25″

Don’t think so, industry standard was 1.125 that’s where a lot of saws sit i.e. Milwaukee fuel but now we see more coming out at 1.25

@dmz2084

That is correct!

Bosch GSA 18V-32 brushless,  Makita DJR187 brushless, and Makita DJR186 brushed are 32mm (1.25″).

Metabo ASE 18 LTX brushed takes out 4th place at 30mm (1.181″).

Milwaukee saws are 28-29mm.

dwainMember since Aug 2013

so close. i should know that, I just reviewed the bosch! But i had in my head that the it had the same as the FUEL.

DMZ should post the next question now ?

dwainMember since Aug 2013

dmz2084Member since Dec 2014

D WMember since Jun 2016

They have more current models than that and I’m talking about all unique models ever released.

@dmz2084 Are you including models with different color options and is it all brushless impact drivers worldwide or all brushless impact drivers from one particular country? Are you taking into account different model number between countries for the same impact?

Different colour options count as the same model (Most colour options are for the Japanese domestic market and only available outside of Japan via grey import). US and World wide model name count as the same model, eg. for Hammer drills XPH07 and DHP481 are the same model. Also when the letter L was removed from the naming scheme  (eg for Hammer Drills LXPH01 and XPH01) count as the same model.

KnarlyCarlMember since Jan 2016

I think it’s 7 models?

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

9?

Correct as far as I am aware.

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Okay here’s mine…

What tool manufacturer was the first to make a hand held power drill?

Bonus who patented the hand held drill with a trigger switch and pistol grip?

Double bonus what years?

I think there’s going to be some controversy on this one! From memory Metabo and FEIN both lay a claim on it, possibly Bosch too?

I’m going with FEIN for the first hand-held electric drill.

Ding ding ding

Fein was the first hand held power drill in the late 1895, Black and Decker makes a claim as well they were the first but they were the first to patent a pistol grip trigger drill in 1920. Bust Metabo or Fein it was a German drill!  On to you sir
