Figured I am going to be doing a few of these coming up and putting them into one thread might be a better idea.
So far to upgrade the shop…I mean garage I have built the flip top table stand and a clamp rack. The next projects is more storage, this time for the table saw. I got the idea from Ryan at shop built on YouTube. He built a storage unit into the wing of the table saw. This solves a lot of problems and keeps the necessary tools and accessories close by. Need to get to the gym today so I was only able to get all of the pieces rough cut except for the bottom.
The plan right now is to put it to the right of the steel extension wing. I’m hoping it won’t be too much weight for the bars. I will need to drill a few more holes into the steel I believe. [External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied]

I have no doubt the bars will be plenty strong. The biggest concern would be what you put in it as far as weight becoming tipsy.
Definitely wasted space down there that would be nice to reclaim.

Basically it will be all table saw and router table. Micro jigs, extra blade, Angle guage, throat plates, and handle to move the router up and down. The heaviest thing would be a dado stack. On the other side I already built a router table so I don’t think there will be any tipping issues. Looks like you are in good shape then.
That’s a great idea. I have the same Delta table saw sitting in my garage at my other home. Let me know how it works out after you get it going.
Looks good

Will do. I’m really excited for this one and think it will work out really well.

Those Delta saws take up a lot of room. It would be nice if it served more than one purpose.
I have to say I like the wheel setup on your table saw better than most I have seen. Nice design.

it works really well unless you hit a low spot in the garage. my floor has some dips in it. other than that I like the design a lot.
Well…I’ve got another box! [External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied]

Well it is essentially done. I need to get some bolts to attach it to the rails as well as drill the holes. I routed out a spot on the lid and the box itself to make it easy to open. I used. 1/4″ round bit but might switch it to a 1/2″ to get some more grip. Lining up the door is a pain and at the moment isn’t lines up exactly front to back. Might try to adjust it when it is on the saw or just trim the back and be done with it. Doesn’t have to be lined up exactly. Looks great. You should be able to put light stuff like push sticks, etc on the inside door too.
Project finished. Well done anyways. There is no finish on it. Should I put some on or just leave it bare? For the whole 5 minutes I’ve had it on I really like it. I see this being extremely useful. Before I didn’t have any good places to put my router table parts. Now I do and everything for the table saw as well! Plenty of room to spare too. I think that turned out fantastic, I say color match the bottom and sides same Delta grey and top a beeswax
Awesome. I was picturing it sideways but this is much better.
Perfect place for that stuff. Good job!

Wow! That’s awesome Rich! If you wanted to finish it go for it, I’d recommend the same as Comp for the wax though. Make thing slide nice and easy. Color? That’s a wide open book. Neat stuff dude!
That looks sweet !!!!
Do you have a shop logo ? Or maybe time to create one ? …

This is the first time I am seeing a table saw insert for storage. Great idea.
Thanks guys. That one pic makes it look sooo big.@Foneguy no shop logo. I’m just an avid diyer.
@ChrisK and@comp56 Ive never applied bees wax to anything before. I’ll look into it.

When I searched for it online to see if it had been done the only video I could find was of Ryan at shop built on YouTube. If you don’t watch him I highly recommend his videos.

Also while we are in the subject of wax….I use the sameness wax Comp posted but for my tools, cast iron and planes, chisels etc they get the Renaissance Wax treatment 🙂
Although I have used it on wood for drawer runners I’d stick with Tim for cast iron after it’s been treated. It’s pretty expensive stuff comparatively.

I still have not found anything that protects the way I want. I have issues with getting rust on table saw as there is moisture in my garage from washing around the corner, etc. I have tried Boshield and Johnson’s paste wax which I see recommended often.
Does anyone have experience with Johnson’s vs this Minwax. I am to the point that I really dont feel there is an answer so I just keep the rust removed and wax applied.I bought a table saw cover which was almost worse.

I’ve been using water based polyurethane for the last 8 months or so with great results. Clean the top and apply a coat or two. Jon heitz on YouTube did a rust test and it performed really well.

I actually behave some paste wax. Bought it to try and protect the table saw (it doesnt for me at least). I’ll put some on the top of the storage cabinet.

Best wear surface I have found for a wood based table saw platform is plastic laminate. Just use paste wax on the top surface every once in a while and it’s golden.
I cant imagine putting poly on a cast iron tablesaw.??

Works just fine rub a coat on. Two things coats should be good for quite a while.

Shop logo? Never thought of that, sounds like a good idea for a shop to have a name.

You could try outside the box. Sexwax, it’s for surfing but I know of it because we use it in ice hockey to help prolong tape life which starts with keeping water out of the tape. I have not used it elsewhere but your comment made me think of it.
Good suggestion and worth trying. Wife will love seeing sexwax on the credit card statement.

I believe it arrives in “discreet” packaging as well …

Mmmm, Mr. Zogs, The best for your stick…
So I am really wanting to make some sort of miter station. My shop area isn’t exactly the biggest for this. My area of the garage is in front of my truck. When working on a project my truck is usually outside if I’m using the table saw or an assembly table. My actual work bench is in an L configuration. I am wondering how much room I really need for material length for the miter saw. I could either put it just off center of the back wall giving me around 5′ from wall to saw. The left side would give me more length but I wouldn’t have a measuring tape on that side since that is where my table saw, planer, and an exterior door is if needed. Or I could put the saw on the right side where it is in the pics. Giving me about 5′ to the left of the saw. I could put a fold down wing to the right and use a roller stand if needed. If I needed anything longer than 5 ft I could just use a circular saw.
Also what I was thinking is I could put the saw and drill press on the back wall. Leave the drill press where it is at but I would lower the base into the bench just like the saw would be. This maximizes space since there wouldn’t be a measuring system for the saw on that side.
Thoughts? Here are some pics.

Dude…..good luck. Pretty full in there especially when you consider adding a truck.
can the table saw move to where the tool box is, and make the tool box more mobile ????

not really. i have the tool box, then my air compressor, garbage can, and then the door to get in. the truck fits in the garage where everything sits in the pics. I can walk between the table saw and my truck when it is parked and walk between my truck and the toolbox. so all that space is free when my truck is parked.
something that I have been contemplating doing is putting the miter saw and drill press on the back wall. leave the drill press but lower it into the bench. put the saw to the right of it and give myself 5 ft of cut capacity. the right section would then be a rubo type workbench on mobile base. that way i could move it out into the garage where my truck is parked. right now my “assembly” table is either the workbench which is against the wall (doesn’t work well for big projects) or a single centipede table. works great but completely stable. also a rubo would allow me to make a leg vice which i would love to have. i dont have any issues with the truck being parked outside when i have a project going. i refuse to use my garage as a permanent storage area for stuff lol. either way the any bench/miter station will be remade. thinking drawers and not doors as well.
@rrich1 is your mitter saw fixed or sliding? I would say add some decent dust collection for your miter station and maybe the capability to add features to the station in the future if need be. Also how do you like your table saw?

It’s sliding with a vacuum attached to it.
I Iike my table saw. Sometimes it has been a pain to incrementally adjust up or down slightly but it might just be me. Adding the router table wing and storage box on the side has really been great use of space for me.
I should mention the right corner is where my crawl space access spot is. Right now I keep one of my shop vacs there and it is the one attached to my miter saw. So that space will keep the vacuum there for whatever I do.

Based on that cutout dude, I would consider a mobile base. I have my Kapex on an mft with Fastcap extension wings. The wings worked perfectly in my shop and allowed me to cut 12′ and 14′ pieces. It looks like your longer wall would not permit extra long cuts. Going with a mobile base, you could roll your saw further out and attach wings for long cuts. I would have suggested an actual built in station like on Jays YouTube channel but you really need a long wall for that to accommodate bigger pieces.
https://www.fastcap.com/estore/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=57444
There are several options, I have the Kapex one but they actually have one for a permanent station too. They zero out very accurately and you can move and level them anywhere. I have mine set up in the shop now with the intention to eventually to eventually do a built in and use my fences on that set up.
I gave up thinking I could park my truck in the garage a long time ago. Just won’t work. So the truck lives outside.

Problem with a mobile base is that is something else on the floor. I’d rather find a way to put the saw in a bench and use that or space for a band saw later on. I really don’t see myself cutting boards that long. If I put the saw with 5ft of cut capacity on the right side then that would leave 7 feet to the left as well. Anything longer I can just use a circular saw. Not ideal but it would work fine.
If the saw was on the right wall then any long boards would go direct into the middle of the garage. Giving me 5 ft to the left of the saw and the length of the garage to the right. I could use a wing like the fast cap for support with a stand on that right side.

I have a solution to your problem. buy more tools.
Shorten your bench where it currently sits. Rebuild a short section of identical bench with wheels and just roll it out into place when you need it and attach some sort of wing to support your stock. When done, roll it back in place and you will basically have what you have now.
Rebuild the bench so the miter saw sits table sits flush with the work bench. Then just use a fold up roller stand for the longer boards. Or put a wing on a hinge that pops up next to the tool box.
