I know we are a power tool website, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have other hobbies. One of my favorite things to do (besides hanging out with my family) is smoking meat and having a BBQ. Seriously, is there anything tastier than a good smoked meat? I have been shopping around for a good wireless thermometer for a while and I think I finally found a reliable one that won’t break the bank. So let’s jump into the Therm Pro TP-08 Review.
Therm Pro TP-08 Review Overview
Before I move on, I know I will have the haters who say you don’t need a thermometer. Without getting into it, I completely disagree but we will save that for another article. While there are many reasons you should use a thermometer in your smoker, there is one everyone will agree on, the internal temperature.
I have an old Weber Charcoal grill I turned into a smoker. Speaking of Weber, here is a company who doesn’t make them like they use to. Since it’s an older grill, there isn’t a thermometer built in. Even if there was, it’s usually in the wrong location.
Most grills have the thermometer on top of the lid, which is completely wrong. Who cares what the temperature is at the lid level. We need to know the temperature at the grilling level.
We need to monitor the level and also keep the temperature consistent so the cooking is optimized. So we really don’t want to be opening the grill lid unless we have to. So this is where the Therm Pro TP08 comes into play.
Therm Pro TP-08 Review Features
The Therm Pro is a wireless thermometer to measure the temperature of your grill and your meat. As a side note, I have the CA version. The US version looks a little different but same functions. There are two units. A receiver and transmitter.
- The range is 32°F to 572°F (0°C to 300°C), perfect for any type of cooking.
- Temperature Accuracy: ±1.8°F (±1°C) from 32 to 212°F (0 to 100°C).
Don’t worry, you don’t have to sync them, they already took care of that at the factory.
The transmitter has two outputs. One goes directly to the meat to measure the internal temperature and the other goes inside the grill to give you a constant temperature reading.
The screen is a good size and is easy to read the big numbers. The unit will flash back and forth between the internal temperature of the meat and the temperature of the inside of the smoker.
Both the metal braids go under the cover. One goes into the meat and the other is placed at the same level as the meat you are cooking.
There is a button that turns the unit on/off plus you can measure in °C or °F.
The wires are braided and extremely strong to take the heat of the grill. So don’t worry about them being cheap and breaking. The kitchen cooking thermometer has a 6.5” food grade stainless steel food probe and 3” oven/bbq probe.
The transmitter will broadcast the temperatures to the receiver up to 300′ away. On the receiver, you can see each temperature and you don’t have to wait for them to cycle back and forth. The screen is also nice and big which makes it easy to read the temperature.
If you are having a hard time reading the screen, there is a nice orange backlight that helps with the contrast.
There are a ton of options with these 7 buttons. You can set an alarm and even a warning if a temperature goes above or below a certain point. You can set a timer and use the backlight. The sync button is to take a reading from the transmitter. It automatically will take a reading but you can force it.
The transmitter has a belt clip so you can always keep it by your side.
A lot of times you have to let your meat rest to a certain temperature. No more guessing. Now that you have a probe, you can see exactly what the temperature of the meat is.
Therm Pro TP-08 Review Performance
If you look on Amazon, it has over 1,200 reviews with an average of 4.5 stars. Even though it is highly rank, I am not sure why I wasn’t expecting much.
However, after using the TP-08, I love this system. The Therm Pro is extremely easy to use and has great distance. The numbers are easy to read and you can make any changes on the fly. The only time I had to go outside was to add more wood or more fuel.
Therm Pro TP-08 Review Value
The Therm Pro TP-08 retails for about $47 on Amazon which I think is a steal. While the quality of the two units could be a little higher, I love all the features. Plus, I like not having to run outside all the time to check the temperature of the grill or smoker.
The units are protected with rubber, but they just have a very light feel to them. In fact, I dropped mine off the desk. They were in the box and now I have something that rattles in the receiver. It still works and is accurate, but something is loose in there.
Therm Pro TP-08 Review Final Thoughts
Bottom line the Therm Pro is awesome. Sure it’s not the top of the line and you can find other units that may have a better build quality, but for the price and the features, it’s a steal for under $50. The unit is very easy to set up and use. The accuracy seems to be dead on so what else do I really need?
