Husky is a power tool company that can trace its roots back to 1924. If you have ever set foot in a Home Depot, then you have probably seen them. They are best known for the Home Depot house brand for hand tools and pneumatic tools. Over the last couple of years, Husky has made a point to take their popular line and build it to a higher quality line. Not only have they raised their quality, but they have increased their product offerings. Pull up a chair and dig into our Husky 92pc Socket Set Review to find out if this is the set for you.
Husky 92pc Socket Set Review Overview
Husky’s 92 piece socket set is a great starter set, for the light Do-It-Yourselfer and homeowner, or even great to keep in a dorm room for those times when a Gerber multi-tool won’t cut it.
While it is nice to have a full set of 1/4″-1/2″ drive deep and shallow sockets filling a large drawer in a big rolling chest in the garage, it does not travel well. This set, on the other hand, does travel well. Sets like this are great for taking to the job site or places where you do not need such a large assortment of sockets. We carry sets very similar to these on all of our fire engines in fact.
Husky 92pc Socket Set Review Features
The set contains 1/4″ and 3/8″ drive sockets. Sizes range from 5/32″-13/16″ in SAE and 4mm-19mm in Metric. There are 10 deep well 1/4″ drive sockets. Two sets of allen/hex keys are also included in ranges 1/16″-7/32″ and 1.5mm-6mm. Only one extension is contained in the set – 3/8″ drive 3″ long.
The hex handle is comfortable and ergonomically formed.
The hex bit handle keeps the bits seated via a magnet only.
In addition to being a socket set, there are also nut driver bits that fit into the bit handle provided.
A small assortment of screwdriver bits are included.
Eight 12-point shallow 1/4″ drive sockets are located just above the 3/8″ ratchet. These are all duplicates, 6 point sockets of all these sizes are also included.
Both the 1/4″ and 3/8″ ratchets are sealed tear-drop quick release style. They both have comfortable handles and easy to maneuver latches to change their direction. The quick release button is large and easy to depress. The ratchets also have a fine tooth gear, which makes turning fasteners in tight spaces a lot easier.
All sockets are laser etched for easy identification.
The sockets also have indentions for the friction ball on the ratchet or extension to securely hold them in place.
The whole set comes protected in a nice plastic molded case with plastic latches. The handle is large and easy to hold even with gloved hands.
The latches are also easy to work, even with gloves on. Their firm and tactile feel make it easy to know when they are secured or opened.
Husky 92pc Socket Set Review Performance
This set works really well and is a great all around kit for the home, office, vehicle, or garage. It has enough tools to tackle most any minor project, and to get you started on bigger ones. The pieces are laid out in an easy to see fashion. Having the tools and their spot labeled makes retrieving and replacing them very fast.
I tested the fit of the 19mm socket on a 19mm bolt against a more expensive tool truck socket. While the fits were slightly different, the Husky socket fit was quite acceptable and in no way in danger of rounding off the fastener.
I only have 2 suggestions for improvement. I would like to have had a 1/4″ extension and at least one spark plug socket. This kit is labeled as a Mechanic’s set, and both of those items would really set this kit off in that realm. Even the simplest of mechanic jobs often require an extension and/or a spark plug socket. These are included on larger sets though.
As with all cases of this style, they are not perfect at holding everything when the case is really thrown around. This case layout did a lot better than I was expecting though. Only a few of the sockets fell out of their perspective holes and one set of allen keys moved slightly. This was after vigorously throwing and shaking the case around. The latches held throughout.
Husky 92pc Socket Set Review Value
I went to Home Depot after I received this set to see what it was currently going for. The price of $39.97 is pretty much impossible to beat for a toolkit like this.
I compared the price on this set to a budget store set and one from a direct competitor. The set at the budget tool store had a third fewer pieces for the same price. The direct competitor’s set was almost the exact same as this Husky set but cost over 75% more.
This was a good deal even at $49.97. At the new lower price, might as well buy a few and keep them in the car, at the office or anywhere.
Husky 92pc Socket Set Review Final Thought
Common socket sizes, high-quality pieces, outstanding price tag, lifetime warranty, and all in a sturdy case. What more do you need? This set is a clear winner and should find a place in everyone’s household.
