It’s our final day of 2023 TIA Holiday Gift Guides and we are ending with stocking stuffers!

Growing up I was actually more excited about what was in my stocking than what was under the tree. Some people assume that stockings are just full of cheap junk. I disagree. I think the perfect stocking is full of smaller but quality items that signify the recipient’s likes and interests.

I think “something fun” is essential in every stocking or gift bag, and whatever that is I like the challenge that it also has to be small. A simple deck of cards can provide endless amounts of fun, but I also like to show people something new, and fun for a wide array of people.

Everyone needs lip balm in winter, may as well make it fun. Just like the chocolate bars, I like to buy a variety pack and disperse the different balms in various stockings.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange

Last but not least is a staple item that I have had in every stocking growing up, and now I put them in my own family’s stockings: a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. This is a much better version of the orange in a stocking tradition in my opinion.

The most common versions are milk or dark chocolate with infused orange flavor. Not only do they taste great, but to eat them you actually have to smack the bottom of the chocolate onto a hard surface and the chocolate breaks into perfect wedges.

Fun fact: Where did the tradition of putting an actual orange or clementine in Christmas stockings come from? One theory is that they’re said to represent a gift of gold from Saint Nicholas. And that oranges in the stocking stems from the generosity of Saint Nicholas (also known as Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and Old Saint Nick), who was the son of a wealthy merchant and later in life a bishop.
