Friday Night Tool Fight – Dewalt vs. Milwaukee Brushless Impact Drivers

15

We have been receiving a lot of emails about our tool fights and when we will be putting the Milwaukee against the Dewalt Impact Drivers.  Well we listened and gave it a shot.  Now before the emails come in saying we did this wrong or that wrong, let’s get a couple things straight.  We are not engineers, we are not scientists.  We are just two dudes who love tools and have fun with them.  There are so many ways to test tools such as torque, battery life and more.  Again, we are just having fun and yes we know one of the sockets were deep and the other one wasn’t.  Again, we are just having some fun.  The other thing we hear a lot is we are Dewalt lovers and try to make Dewalt win everything.  That’s not true.  Dan is a huge fan of Dewalt as you can see by the wall behind us.  However I am a huge fan of Milwaukee.  I work with my tools for a living and use mostly Milwaukee and Bosch everyday.

So for our fun Friday Night tool fight we put the new Dewalt DCF895 against the Milwaukee 2653-22.  Both are 18V and both are brushless.  We set them both to the number 3 speed and ran a 4″ bolt through a 4×4.  Both had 100% full charge on the battery.  All we were doing was to see how many we could drive before the battery died.  We also wanted to see what else we noticed.  When you look at the stats, they are very close so we really didn’t expect one tool to blow the other away.

We just bought a new Cannon 60D camera so we wanted to get some great footage.  However we really don’t understand the camera and for some reason it shut off after a certain amount of time.  We still captured most of it on video.

As you can see we pretty much started at the same time.  One thing that really surprised us was both drivers died at the same time.  Dan still had a little juice, but it wouldn’t move the bolt.  Another thing we noticed was at the beginning the Milwaukee smoked the Dewalt in terms of speed and driving the bolt.  As time went on the Dewalt had more of a consistant speed and caught up.  In the end the Milwaukee ran 33 bolts in and out, while the Dewalt did 34 bolts.  Again, not a huge difference.

You can see the stats below and the video of the fight.  As you can see the stats and outcome were very close, so we really don’t have a clear winner.  We do have a clear whiner and that would be Dan.

  1. It’s amazing how defensive people get over things. I’ve found that most times people buy what they like without regards to any actual fact based reasoning and then go to the end of the earth and back to needlessly justify their decision to everyone else. I’d be willing to bet half the people who send hate mail about their tool of choice being deemed “second fiddle” have never even used the other tool in the test. People are just strange by nature.

  2. Both tools are good. I have used both brands on the job. At home I only buy 18 volt Dewalt as that is the brand I started with.I only want to stock one battery type. All Dewalt 18 volt batteries are interchangeable.

  3. Not all dewalt btteries are interchangeable. One is a slide pack, and the other is a stick on. Also make this clear 20vlt max is an 18vlt…. Other words if you where to test all batteries in the market they are all at 20.7 volt when you put a load they all drop to 18vlt.

  4. i’m a homeowner and thats how i use my tools not for a living but i bought the milwaukie kit cordless drill and the impact.i used the impact alot and getting my place buttoned up for a trip out of the area i spaced inadvertantly left my impact outside for two weeks in the weather and i live in oregon so yea lots of rain.i sent it in to milwaukie repair it didn’t cost a dime.they paid shipping a printed fedex shipping label the whole nine yards no questions asked.i wasn’t even expecting it to be warranty work do to my own stupidity.milwaukie stands by their products bar none,i was quite impressed to say the least.no receipt either

  5. I’m a professional drywall finisher (25 yrs high end commercial/custom homes)and I do A LOT of customer service work as well. Haven’t tried the Dewalt, but have owned the Milwaukee for a little over a year now and it’s an absolute work horse with exceptional build quality! I own and have owned just about every brand of tools over the years and this impact driver is about as good as it gets.

  6. All dslr camera limits video recording no more then 30 minutes max. Depending on which resolution settings that you chose, its either 20 or 30 minutes before it stops. It has something to do with the video file format limit the file size, so it has to stop. I just wish it would just automatically create another files and continue recording. I also read somewhere this is to avoid certain tax or not to compete with camcorder.

  7. Just picked this dewalt impact up and I’m in love. I run a maintenance crew and we do a little of everything. The only weird thing is I’m not sure if the battery does actually ever die? Can’t get it to so far! Also love the tool fights.
