Apprentice Cabinetmaker tool choice

So I am an apprentice cabinetmaker and now on a mission to fill the van up of tools…. ( exiting times but all the same the fear of spending a lot of $$$ and not being impressed with quality)  I am a firm believer in buying the highest quality tools I can afford and minding them. I am based in Ireland so my first main purchase of tools is going to be from Canada as its much cheaper and even cheaper again if I make a once off large purchase and save on shipping allowing me to get more bang for my buck!

Any info ye have for me on any of the tools mentioned would be great e.g my good/bad choices and what you would/wouldn’t do if in my shoes. I have previous experience with almost all the big brands but it would of been older models. Only up to date brand I have experience with is the Dewalt 20v max 3 speed hammer drill, jigsaw, circular saw. The 3 speed drill is good but the jig and circular saw are only OK!

So below are the tools I plan to buy for my first order…

MAKITA.

6-1/2″ Brushless Circular Saw 18V

18V 5Ah Li-Ion Battery Makita

NEW 1/4″ Ultra Compact High Torque Impact Driver with Brushless Motor – Tek Mode Makita

1/2″ Cordless Hammer Driver-Drill with Brushless Motor – 5 AH KIT

18V Li-Ion Brushless Barrel Grip Jig Saw Makita

3-1/4″ Cordless Planer Makita

12.0A 6-1/2″ Plunge Cut Saw with 118″ Guide Rail Makita

55″ Guide Rail for SP6000 Plunge Cut Saw 1400mm Makita

5″ 3.0A Random Orbit Sander with Hook and Loop Pad Makita

DEWALT.

20V MAX 16ga Angled Cordless Finish Nailer Kit – 2AH Kit

2 Pack of 20V Max Li-Ion Battery 5.0AH

Dewalt DCS355BR 20V MAX XR 20 Volt Cordless Oscillating Multi Tool

DeWalt 20V Max Lithium Ion Brushless 1” SDS Rotary Hammer Drill

MILWAUKEE.

M12 Premium Heated Jacket Kit

M12 Fuel 1/4″ Hex Impact (2 Batteries)

Thanks guys!! Once I get my tools and put hours on them I will definitely be on here letting ye know what I think of them and sharing any info I can!

I presume ur talking about makita yes? I was going to do that too but really like the idea of tek mode on the newer impact! Plus the extra torque and rpms will be handy for driving bolts into masonry.

wow that is some order, these guys should give you a discount even more than they advertise …….boy did I open a can of worms…lol

Ireland must have terrible prices for it to be worthwhile to order from Canada. …. seems shipping would kill the deal. It’s crazy thinking of how easy it is to get stuff here in the states and pretty much taking it for granted

Ireland does have terrible prices and when it comes to latest models it’s hard to find any except dewalt. I still keep my purchases within Europe for warranty purposes
comp56Member since Sep 2014

so if your are buying all this stuff from North America, do you use a converter to plug the stuff in or are you 120V there?

Ireland sure is a rip off and terrible choice too!!  Approx 20% of the overall price will go to shipping and taxes!(taxes are unpredictable so it may even be more) Either way I am saving loads If I guessed id say ill save 60% from buying from Canada including shipping and taxes rather than buying from Ireland!!  I know the warranty is useless but you should be clearly able to see why ill take the gamble!!

yes over here if you are working on a site its the law to only use 110v tools for safety. So ill just cut the cord and change the plug. Yes it means always needing the transformer but its worth the savings! Ill try post a pic of one. http://hughcrane.co.uk/media/catalog/product/t/r/transformer.jpg

I know this seems like a crazy list but I have been saving a long time and did a lot of research! I just would not be able to do it otherwise!

I cannot decide to get the barrel grip Jigsaw or the D handle!!?? Any suggestions??

I like the flexibility of a barrel grip, it’s much easier to make your scrolls rather than trying to hang on to the trigger while turning.

Are u not gonna get hit with a huge import duty from the Irish government?

And I have the barrel grip jigsaw. Two handed job to turn it on and off which is a pain but works a treat otherwise

jackfinzoMember since Dec 2015

Yes import duties are just another hurdle to deal with. They will probably b around 500 euro from a rough online calculator…. Ill let ye know when I find out.

As I said this site has been invaluable to me over the last while I definitely want to give back. So I’ll give detailed information on cost taxes shipping import duties and reviews on everything once all is sorted! It should help out anybody on my side of the world looking to order over seas.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

kornomaniacMember since Oct 2014

im not sure as some of these particular tools are not available in Ireland.

I would guess to buy this locally it would cost approx 10000 maybe even 12000 Canadian dollars…. You would be shocked at some of the prices…

comp56Member since Sep 2014

oh my, no wonder your happy……

kornomaniacMember since Oct 2014

pretty much the site I posted and other places but don’t think they will ship to you. So if you can find a place that will ship and its cheaper for you then you got it made. No some things are high price for me but not for the USA members all because our Canadian dollar is weak right now.

jackfinzoMember since Dec 2015

if all works out i am pretty happy with the price… just cant wait to finally have them at this stage!!!

comp56Member since Sep 2014

awesome good luck

jackfinzoMember since Dec 2015

also I am taking advantage of the weak Canadian Dollar! Generally I order from US but their dollar is very strong right now!! That’s why I was  struggling to locate stuff.

jackfinzoMember since Dec 2015

Just for any one who doesn’t believe me… look at this link to the dewalt track saw its not even as goo as the makita! I will admit that if I shopped around id find it cheaper but just as an example!! keep in mind its in Euro too!!
