What do you do with all of your cases?

For all of you guys that moved into a modular system, use bags or leave them out in the trailer or garage…what do you do with the cases the tool(s) came in? Just chuck them? I have a stack taller than me sitting down in the basement that is taking up space and I’m not sure what to do with them…

John GlasseyMember since Jan 2014

You and me too. You can always sell them! There are guys on the forum that are looking for cases for tools they have bought as a bare tool.

Too much effort to sell them in my opinion, I ask if anybody wants one if not I drop them off at the recycling center, not a fan of all those cases

I’d never use the plastic case for a tool I use a lot, they’re great for an occasional use tool. I like getting the bags with my power tools, those are much more useful to me. I use one to haul extra stuff I need from home to work or work to home. I’m hoping my next Milwaukee purchase will come with a contractor’s bag, could use another one of those to replace the soon to be overflowing HF tool bag for my car’s tool bag.

I keep them just in case I want to sell the tool later. That’s just my reasoning it looks more presentable.

One case I cut all the inside out and I store my Dewalt batteries and a charger in but that’s the extent.

All my cases become where I toss my accessories my case from my drill combo kit has all my drill bits, grinder wheels and saw blades, screwgun case has impact sockets, wrenches and extensions, one has batteries and chargers, one has cordless tools. Basically for every power tool I get I have enough other tools to fill its bag. The system works for me.

I used to like the cases, until my collection got bigger and now its just taking up way too much room

Agreed. I think they’re all just gonna get tossed.

I may just take a pic of the whole stack and throw them on Craigslist for a week.

BMack37Member since Sep 2015

I’m not sure if they’re selling on eBay because there are a bunch listed…but it’s not hard to do a listing, it’s free and it’s only about three clicks to relist the item(or you can select automatic relist). The majority of the work would be taking the pics and keeping track which model tool went in which case(and others that fit, check other listings for this) but you only have to do it once. It could easily be a free $100+ if they do actually sell. You’d need to check the “sold listings” to see if they’re actually selling.

I can give any of you some help on listing things on eBay if you need advice or whatever. A few years ago I was selling a lot on eBay, now not soo much.

Shipping is annoying though

The problem with tools in cases is they don’t fit in a USPS flat rate box or bag 🙂 You save a bunch of money that way.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

I use a few and recycle some. I’ve got space for gun cleaning and ammo etc, my old Milwaukee bags are now being used for lathe tools and supplies.

FazzmanMember since Apr 2014

like other folks above I put em in the recycle bin. i have a few cases around for my circ saw and SDS.

Marc HarrisMember since Jan 2016

Stuff them with first aid and roadside emergency supplies and give them away for Christmas!

chadlanthierMember since Mar 2013

Store other stuff that’s in your basement in them.or hell they make great overnight bags.

rrich1Member since Jun 2015

One reason why I went with Bosch and the l boxx system. I use an l boxx 3 for nothing but paint supplies. Another one that my circular saw I have my grinder and orbital sander plus pads and discs in.

I don’t like them especially if your shop is stationary, on the go I can see a use but not for me…..they just pile up…….I’d trade them all in for a free battery or something but no….

MikeyBMember since Dec 2014

I almost wish tool manufacturers would give you the option when you buy a power tool from them, do you want the case or not? I remember The Hilti cases would cost close to 100 dollars. And in my option those cases are the worst. Give me the tool missus the case and I save a few bucks…

DR99Member since Nov 2012

Well to cut costs Dewalt has removed hard cases from a lot of their combo kits. They come with a tool bag now.

dg1127Member since Jun 2015

I love the cases I save them give them out or repurpose then for a different tool or use them as organizer for smaller tools

Bosch has that option. Bare tool, soft case, or lboxx [emoji16]

I would add in the Festool and Bosch realm, the sustainers and l boxes get used in my shop. They are a treat and though I rarely take my tools out of the shop, on the rare occasion having my investments protected and interconnected is a big deal. With my Festools, I use the mobile carts around the shop and my second midi has my TS systainer on the top so I can pull it to the other side of the shop for sizing sheet goods down. My Dewalt boxes, Milwaukee bags etc…..I ise the Milwaukee bags as parts containers or for my lathe tools and chucks! Very useful. I used to have a lot of Milwaukee tools and I would get rid of those blow molded cases.

WeldfabNeilMember since May 2015

before I moved across country I had a whole stack of cases in the shed. I kept a few when I moved but for the most part didn’t keep any. When I had my garage/moving sale I put the tool specific cases in a pile of free stuff. The cases like the dewalt tough box or similar I sold cheap.

Hard cases take to much space for just one tool. I work out of my truck I just don’t have enough room.

iam76Member since Jan 2016

yah i wish i bought the case for my  DCN692B – 20V MAX* XR Brushless Dual Speed Nailer (Tool Only)

things got some weight..

I just got a decent wheel suite case I store all my Batteries blades and accessories in it. Then I use the contractor bag for the tools we use most is there a tool we do not use much it might be in a case domino is the only thing I think I have in a case and it has all its accessories with it. all my other cases get tossed in the recycle bin or put on ebay. don’t be shocked what people will pay for a case and manual 🙂

They do tend to build up over time. But can’t bring myself to just throw them out for some reason.

I recycle so I feel better about myself lol
