I think is a weight rating thing the 8′ black is a 500lb and the 10, is a 300lb

Pardon me for not being a ladder expert. Why couldn’t you have fiberglass steps? You could use aluminum for support on the underside. I’ve seen ladders with plastic steps that have aluminum supports.
