i was wondering how hard everyone is on there tools? I sorta look at pics on various forums an see some tools I think man I couldn’t possible keep it that clean after how I use mine. Then there’s other people I think I would never abuse my tools like that. Either way is cool as long as it works for you but how are you with your tools? .
Personally I consider myself to use my tools somewhat hard. I wouldn’t say I abuse them but I could probably be a little nicer. I wipe my wrenches down every now an then but not every use. I run my welder at the max but always keep it maintained an ready.
With that thoe I buy the good stuff even if it means buying used I would rather have a used snap on then a new harbor freight.
I would say I’m a tool user like I’m a responsible car owner. Routine maintenance and cleaning so they are always working well. If a corded tool breaks, I’ll try my best to repair it. With all the money I spend on tools, I hope to keep them forever and pass them down someday.

Interesting question! I too do not understand those who abuse their tools, especially when they paid a lot of money for them. When I was picking out my leaf blower, I watched a video from Husqvarna about their blowers. Turns out, the company said they know that many landscapers will just throw the backapack blowers off them onto the ground, so they made the frame more durable against impacts. I am like, WTF! I would never treat a piece of equipment like that, who in their freaking mind thought that was a good idea to treat tools?
Then you got Dewalt making their tools to last, cement mixers, dropped from 16 feet, being submerged. Its like, WTF are people doing with their cordless tools that they need that kind of durability? People just need to get over themselves and realize that they arn’t the king of the USA, nobody is just going to replace that tool for them when it breaks. Respect your tool, and it will respect you. You kick a german sheapard with your foot, what you think he is going to do take it? No, he’s coming back to bight you in the ass.
Hahaha…I seen a video pitting a DeWalt and a Milwaukee drill, the guy threw both drills in a cement mixer and let it go for awhile. The Milwaukee didn’t work but the DeWalt came out fine. I thought the test was a little dramatic, lol. I mean who abuses their tools that much? I haven’t seen too many people use a tool, and then drop it on ground. I’ll set my tool on the ground or on a hook, but never have I just thrown it across the room haha. Your right, Respect your tool, and it will respect you.
Thank you man!PROTOOLNUT wrote:
I applaud you sir, that is the proper way to treat a tool. 🙂

I’ve thought the same thing seeing people post their tools and they are super dirty and all piled into one small bag..aswell as the super clean looks like their brand new guys..
I’m not afraid to use my tools and put them to work but when I’m done I like to at least blow them off or a quick wipe down but it’s certainly not very thorough.
My big thing is organization..my tools need tobe where they belong when I need them!!
Each tool has its own place and doesn’t matter how long or hard the day or job was..I take the time to make sure each tool is accounted for and in its right place!!
Every few weeks I’ll give most of them a good cleaning aswell as the box or bag they stay in.
I work to hard and spend too much on my stuff to throw around and like NaulRash said I plan to hand down what I can someday!!
I am also pretty picky who I let use my stuff aswell..I had to learn the hard way after watching my month old m18 fuel impact hit the floor from 12 foot ladder:(
Love my Tools!! But sometimes it gets alil hard to keeper clean especially when doing mechanic work or when I have to dismantle cars plus my co workers been grabbing for my wrenches a lot lately at work and they don’t throw them around or anything but they aren’t to gentle either we all use eachothers tools at work and have never had a problem but now I’ve been leaving my fuels at home more often but like u guys said they cost a lot of dang hard earned Money!!
Oh and about lending tools out to others besides my buddy’s at work they know what it is to spend good money on our tools but others like family and other friends who don’t care really man it really urks me when I lend my mower to my bro in-law and he brings it back all dirty dry grass and dog shit on the wheels from him being to lazy to pick them up b4 he cuts the grass lol sorry guys I had to let that out he’s really a good lazy ass guy 😉 and u never lend him any of my cordless tools lol!
I also like to use my tools but I also like the took look nice at the same time, so I do tend to baby them to a point. If i could I would have a set of Ryobi tools just to have as beater tools just to abuse and not care.

I’m a tool user, I take care of all my stuff just for the fact that this stuff isn’t cheap and I don” think anyone can justify replacing an item due too neglect and abuse.
Also, I hate to grab something out of the box when going to work on something and have it covered in grease and dirt.
Im different i love the look of a beat up dirty tool…. lol i dont want my tools to stay pretty i like them to look like iv been putting them threw the rings but thats me lol

I would say I work my tools as hard as I have to to get the job done.
I work for a GC so one day I could be doing door hardware and the next I could be working in the mud for a 500 yard concrete pour. I do take pride in and care of my tools, but doing what I do they see their bumps and lumps.
I’m somewhere in the middle. I wouldn’t toss my stuff around or leave it to the elements, but I’m pretty lax on maintenance. I’ll blow off my workbench and if I see some sawdust buildup I’ll clean it out. A little paint splash here, a little grime there, meh. I have had the same push lawnmower for 5 years and replaced the air filter and oil once. I guess I should pay more attention.
from what I have invested might be very little for some and others quit a bit….anyways I apply common sense when it comes to my tools use and care…..I like helping buddies out but not with using my tools…..there is a certain connection I have with each and every one of them…..lol tools that is!
I probably take too good of care, that is because I only use them in my workshop. I keep my workshop, cleaner then the lady keeps the house.

I like to clean my tools and my tool belt and boxes after every big job, spend an afternoon just cleaning and organizing everything, and giving everything a nice wipe down, then look at my tools, smile, and get on with the next project. 😉
oh don’t you kid yourself I too wipe my tool now and again…lol
I use my tools like they are met to be but I try to keep my tool clean I have dropped my impact a couple of time and still works like new but I hate it when I do that I spend my hard earned money on them and I want them to last
