I’m finally moving to the dark (Red) side

I know I’m not exactly an early bird, but the death of my Dewalt circ saw, and an excellent sale on Milwaukee FUEL kit have led me to a very difficult decision….

Take a look at the gear I’m selling! I’m also gonna sell my Bosch grinder.

Photo from the original forum

I’m gonna keep my other Bosch gear (Planer, Jigsaw, SDS, Multitool), and add the BL hybrid impact. The rest will all be Milwaukee:

FUEL 6.5″ Saw

FUEL Hammer Drill

FUEL Grinder

M18 Compact Drill

2.0Ah and 4.0Ah batteries.

So overall I’ll have less tools and batteries, but the tools I want most (impact, drills, grinder and circ saw) will all be my favourites, and brand new warranties etc. I’ll also be on my favourite platform.

This feels like buying a new home!

I did the same thing. I listed all of my DeWalt stuff on eBay and bought Milwaukee.

I converted my 12v tools over first. Then the fuel sawzall and circ saw are what pushed me over to Milwaukee for the 18v stuff.

Dewalt makes some great tools but they need to catch up with some really good brushless saws.

wow that’s a BIG step Dwain but not into the wrong direction, milwaukee is kicking ass right now and honestly has been for quite some time now, I’m gonna hold out a lil longer with all my line of Tools Dewalt and hope for the best in my Team Yellow. I do own a nice bunch of awesome Red tools to so I’m happy with that for now
ChrisMember since Jun 2015

Nothing wrong with that at all. I am sorry to hear that your circular saw gave out on you.

I’m more of like a team rainbow of colors myself LOL. I even have a few neon green Ryobi tools, but if it gets the job done that’s all that matters.

hahaha. If only oztooltalk was still active. i was imagining Dark Maul when naming the thread ….

I would actually have the largest / best lineup by keeping some of the Dewalt tools, but I’ve decided that I just can’t have THREE cordless lines…

Nalu RashMember since Apr 2015

I think your making a great choice. In fact, I know your making a great choice because you are far more knowledgeable about tools then me. I only had a foot in the pool with my Dewalt 20v max drills but decided to jump off the cliff into the great red sea of Milwaukee. I’m very happy I did, I’ve got no regrets. I’ll stick with Milwaukee for the cordless tools. For corded, I’ve always got whatever works best for me. I love my Bosch concrete and woodworking tools.

if my circ saw hadn’t died, i would have even considered the move. but rather than fork out AU$175 for a decent saw, I started considering getting the best saw around, and many hours of though and research later, here I am …

Wow Dwain! That’s going to be a costly move! I won’t sway you either way, I’ve got my Milwaukee M12 Fuels, a couple of Makitas, a couple of Bosch’ and some Dewalt. I love me all!

Jason SnyderMember since Dec 2014

With that being said what are you asking for the tools you are selling

NERemodelingMember since Aug 2014

Great move ditching the Dewalts.. only thing is you should be jumping to Makita!! Ask your boy Mike.. he will tell you!

Huge line of tools, great quality, excellent top of the line performance and a huge selling point for me is it allows you to be in their X2 36v line with your same batteries!!

Do it, do it, do it!!!!

dwainMember since Aug 2013

Nah I’ll come out about even, but with less batteries and less tools. I’m separating into kits and skins, getting whatever i can 🙂

I thought about Makita, but I like Milwaukee’s saw and grinder better. Makita also don’t make a good compact drill, and still don’t have battery gauges on their batteries. 18Vx2 is pretty awesome though.

BremonMember since Dec 2014

Are you going with paddle switch or slide switch? Are you getting the current hammer drill or waiting for the 2704?

Either way, congrats on the good decision.

dwainMember since Aug 2013

the kit comes with 1st gen FUEL model, i don’t imagine Australia will see the 2704 for a while. I don’t need that torque monster anyway…

The Makita 18Vx2 saw is pretty compelling.  What do you like better about the Milwaukee saw?

NERemodelingMember since Aug 2014

I have both the new Makita BL 6.5″ grinder and BL grinder.. I have never used the Fuel but the Makitas are damn nice. Huge improvements from the older models.. especially the grinder.. plenty of power for real job site work.

I also own the X2 7.25″ saw and that is great as well. I’ll say the BL 6.5 is damn near it in terms of power the X2 might just have a bit more and complete the cut a tad faster is all. Most of the time I just use the BL 6.5 though. Even ripping treated 2x framing lumber

Your not gonna go wrong with Milwaukee especially if it’s a load cheaper. Im nit trying to talk you out of it.. I just love Makita, feel they make solid tools that won’t fail me on the job and have a huge line and love the X2.. most of the new tools come with the battery indicator on the tool also.. it can be inconvenient not having it on the battery but I have survived thus far.

I be making the move myself as soon as the second gen stuff comes out but saying that iv only 2 dewalt cordless tools so it wont be much of a hit, depending on pricing of course Ireland seems really expensive for Milwaukee gear I’m happy enough with my corded dewalt gear for now.

i want some Milwaukee tools….err I mean more……

kornomaniacMember since Oct 2014

And dwain.! Don’t you have the ddf480 model compact in aus? That can easily keep up with the comoacs of all other brands without a doubt 🙂

rfwjrMember since Jul 2014

That is a lot of yellow going on the block. I would not mind picking up a few red tools myself.

chewie17Member since Apr 2015

I honestly was never a huge fan of dewalt… my dad always used ryobis and I knew I would never end up with one of them… I had a bosch kit (drill/impact) loved the impact didn’t like the drill so much. then along came Milwaukee, I just went out and bought a set for my dad for fathers day last year (so I could use them to see if I liked them) I loved them so I went ahead and just after this past Christmas went for the fuel… cant say enough good words about Milwaukee! my buddies have dewalt and Makita, after using all 3 im glad I went red, Makita comes in a close second for feel and comfort. the dewalt tools I could never get that variable speed trigger to work right it was all on or all off and I didn’t like that. im excited for all the new red stuff coming out with the gen 2 fuel and I think that you made a great move, however I don’t think I would be doing the same if the roles were reversed, like some mentioned before that’s a lot of tools to up and drop to get new ones. mind you breaking even makes it a little easier to wrap my head around.

in any case glad to hear, hope you don’t regret it! (you wont but ill say it anyways)

Charles HarrisMember since Apr 2015

I never piled my DeWalt stuff into one pile. This is what I got rid of when I switched over. Also had a 20v Circ saw, 18v Circ saw, 18v drill, and 18v light not pictured.

dwainMember since Aug 2013

C Harris, you almost had as many drills/drivers as me! 🙂

Sorry Dominic, don’t like ANY of Makita’s compacts much.

I like the size of 6.5″ saws, they’re light and small. The Makita 6.5″ is great, but not quite as powerful or sturdy as the (heavier) Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee won’t be cheaper than Makita, its just a slight preference. If I didn’t have the Bosch gear already (planer, jigsaw, multi-tool), i would definitely choose Makita as the better more holistic range for me (a woodworker mainly).

How much for those 5.0’s and the hammer drill?

Given the roll Milwaukee is on as of the last few years, you are probably making a wise choice, Dwain. I have Dewalt and Makita for my 18v stuff, but I have been eyeing several of the fuel offerings. I’m just a DIYer, so I’ll probably just get the few Fuel items I want as opposed to sell all my stuff as I don’t need to lug my tools anywhere, so having multiple platforms isn’t as much of an issue for me as it might be for others who use tools for a living. Good luck with the move to Milwaukee.

I’m in Melbourne, Australia Jack, probably no good to you 😉

I’m also a DIY’er, but I can’t afford to get into Milwaukee without selling my Dewalt. I also don’t want to have to take more than 2 battery platforms if i want to do a bit of work at a friends house. I’m already concerned that I’ll want to take 4 batteries with me for drill + impact, as they’ll be on different brands…

Congrats. Have you tried out a Fuel Sawzall yet? It’s one of my favorite 18v tools.

dwainMember since Aug 2013

i could get the sawzall as well, but I’ve owned the Dewalt 20V recip for nearly 3 years and used it about 3 times. I just can’t justify the price of that (amazing) expensive tool for how much i used it (not being a tradie).

I hear you. I’m not a tradie either, but I find myself reaching for the sawzall pretty often. It could have something to do with growing up with a dad and grandpa that were plumbers. They had me running one when I was 8 or 10 years old. It just seems natural to grab one now. Sawzall, Hole Hawg, and a Ramset Rotary hammer are the main tools I remember using with them plumbing.

Congrats on the new tools!

bothuhead19Member since Jun 2015

The Red Side is the only side and after the GEN 2 Fuel comes out, there will be no others in the equation.  Dewalt is great too but nobody makes cordless saws like Milwaukee.  Sure they are expensive but you get what you pay for.

Nalu RashMember since Apr 2015

Milwaukee is innovating on a different level. They’ve even added new colors to the Inkzall!

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk

ShuutrMember since Jun 2015

The only thing that kept me from getting Milwaukee sooner was I didn’t know enough about tools to justify the higher prices some of their FUEL products demand. Now I have a pretty good set going.

I think the gen public may be the same way. The lines that aren’t as innovative will use that price difference to keep their sales up until they can match Milwaukees lineup.

bothuhead19Member since Jun 2015

PROTOOLNUT wrote:

Did you see Dan & Erics latest tool talk video? I found their opinions very informative. I saw how Dan was trying to hold onto Dewalt for dear life, but even he admitted that he is slowly being pulled towards Milwaukee. Eric was right, at least for right now, Milwaukee is kicking some serious ass with their innovations. In my humble opinion, the real fight is between Milwaukee and Makita. Because |Makita has the widest cordless tool selection, but Milwaukee has the latest and greatest innovations coming out. Personally, I think its no question that Milwaukee are going to make the biggest sales this year, but I could be wrong. But Dewalt is most certainly not going to be the most wanted tool brand this year for sure, and neither will Bosch or Ridgid.

I agree that it’s now between Milwaukee and Makita.  Makita definitely has a serious lineup and their new brushless saws are an excellent upgrade over their brushed ones.  I think Makita might have taken their intro into brushless a little too lightly because their first gen brushless drill seemed to run into a lot of trouble.  Since then they’ve definitely turned it up a notch.  I love Milwaukee’s approach to new tools though.  It seems like they really do throw everything into it as far as engineering and really making an innovative tool that’ll last.  Then when that tool hits the market it’s as if they go straight to “Now how can we make this tool better?”  Milwaukee should be the favorite for biggest sales.

Northern RebelMember since May 2014

Milwaukee tools are power.

bothuhead19Member since Jun 2015

I really like that Milwaukee updated their older brushed lines as well.  With their premium FUEL line undergoing some improvements other companies who can’t keep up will push bargain versions of their premium tools to try to boost sales.  But with those improvements on the brushed lines, the consumer will get better tools at the same price as those bargain versions from other companies.  Don’t know if that makes sense but I couldn’t type fast enough to catch up to my brain so as I kept going through reading what I typed I started losing my train of thought LOL!

dwainMember since Aug 2013

Yeah I agree with most, Milwaukee or Makita is where its at. Though I’m not sure either match Bosch or Metabo for build quality. And some of Metabo’s cordless tools are still unparallelled (BL drill, grinder, 400Nm wrench).

I think I’m actually gonna grab the bosch compact drill, rather than the Milwaukee. They are both brilliant, but this way I have compact drill and impact driver/wrench in one brand, and hence only need slim batteries in one brand.

I’ve already bought the FUEL Drill, Grinder & Circular Saw with 4.0Ah batteries. Can’t wait to start using them…

Yes I’ll have to agree about Bosch. I really like their build quality. For a small shop type environment, they are second to Festool imo. They’ve got awesome routers, orbital sanders, a good contractor grade table saw, great miter saws, and the small compact drills and drivers are perfect for case assembly. I have a Bosch 7-1/4″ corded circular saw thats become my favorite. (Until I get the Milwaukee 2731, lol)
