Solar Panels

Tomorrow i have an appointment with a local solar company.

i already had the company over from HomeDepot, but thats BS to me…leasing a system.

and you still have to pay $150 a month.

that amount is actually for paying of the panels lol, so after 20 years you own the system.

but they dont tell you that!!!!

i want see ZERO on my electric bill.

the money i save each month can go towards paying off the solar system.

plus when you lease the system, the company gets all the tax deduction and rebates, plus they sell the overproduction the the electric company.

so; they are going to come out and give me an estimate for a solar system on the house.

kinda sick of paying 300-500 bucks a month for the damn HVAC system.

everytime it kicks in, heating or cooling down the house, the meter goes 4 times faster than normal.

ย

i checked that our average usage per year (2014) is/was 1034 kWh

300-500 a month brother? Do you leave your windows open? That’s a pretty high number. I helped a friend install his panels. It was pretty cool. He had a few set up on a sun tracker that he made. He made everything himself in his garage.

thats when you live in the desert ๐Ÿ˜›

Poisonfangs85Member since Feb 2015

Yikes! I worked in Vegas for four months at the airport, you guys can keep your desert lol.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

vegas is pretty hot. i lived there myself for 2 years.

then moved away from there but still inthe desert.

vegas sucks because even during the night i never cools down. stays 85.

here were i live now, ya its warm during the day, but as soon as the sun goes down at 7pm – you can feel it and the temp drops down to 70/75

DR99Member since Nov 2012

You can’t use a swamp cooler? It sucks here in Michigan we get the heat and humidity so you can only use AC to cool the house. The other thing that really sucks is we lost all of our trees to the emerald ash borer we don’t get any relief from the afternoon sun in the summer. Our cooling bills in the summer are pretty expensive ๐Ÿ™ I wish I had geo thermal heating and cooling.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

swamp cooler works, but not on humid days here. sometimes we get those too. plus i have to run new ducting etc….

would be a complete new install.

it would solve the problem in the summer, but the electric bill would be still high during the winter ๐Ÿ˜›

comp56Member since Sep 2014

solar panels are a scam unless you have a field full of them which the leasers are creating…..

Samuel L.Member since Sep 2014

I don’t even have any AC in my house and its fine all year round once every 2 years it gets a little too warm to be comfortable for half a week.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

i pulled the trigger today and purchased a solar system.

the system will be installed in the next 2 weeks and takes about 2-3 days. cant wait to get the panels on roof.

Given the amount of electricity you use on average, how long do you anticipate it will tale for you to break even?
madman_usMember since Sep 2014

break even actually after 1month because we wont have a electric bill…

that money we are saving goes towards the solar system.

we used 12.500kw last year, so our average per month is 1034kwh

right now we are paying and average of $200 each month to the electric company. blowing out money!!!

sometimes during the summer we hit $300-$400; december as well due to heating and x-mas lights

the system will be paid of within 5years

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Nice how much u paying a month for panels?

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

400 the first year, then we get 30% fed tax credit back, that goes towards the panels (6k) and then our payments gonna be 200 for 4 years

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

After the 5 years UR gonna love the bill I bet if there is any. Did u end up buying fringe annoying HD guy?

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

na i went with a local company…really nice people

yeah im excited to get the solar panels on the roof and start producing my own electric lol

hathatylMember since Sep 2013

Nice madman. I had a few classes in college about solar panel estimation and installation, so I’m always interested in this kinda stuff.

NordrawMember since Dec 2012

How much is the fee to the electric company every month for letting you use the solar? I heard they have this fee but never knew what it was. Can’t believe you will have a zero electric bill even with the solar panels. Do as much research as you can on total cost and how long before you break even. Good luck and let us know how it works for you. I too live in a place that has very high heat in the summer. Inland Empire about 4 hours from Vegas.ย

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

beaumont is right around the corner ๐Ÿ˜›

i eat sometimes at gramma’s country kitchen, really good food!

the amount of solar panels are calculated by the average kwh-usage. we will get 28 panels.

the solar guy told us that edison(the electric company) charges him sometimes 20 cents or so

NERemodelingMember since Aug 2014

Nice move MM!! ย  thats a great investment

Poisonfangs85Member since Feb 2015

Looking forward to pics!

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

yeah i gonna make pictures during the whole installation

NordrawMember since Dec 2012

Grandma’s country kitchen is pretty good. Eaten there a couple of times, long drive from Palm Springs though. About 28 miles I think. I heard there is a monthly fee you have to pay the electric company to allow you to use the panels, is that true? ย ย

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

im actually from yucca valley, so its a bit further then….but hey we live in the states….long distance driving is normal ๐Ÿ˜€

sometimes we combine the drive with a shopping tour to cabazon or ontorio mills

ย

no fee – no penalty, nothing…

NordrawMember since Dec 2012

Yeah, Cabazon is a cool place to look around. My girlfriend loves the “Coach” store. Have you tried Victoria Station in Rancho? That’s the best I think.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

you prolly mean victoria gardens in rancho cucamonga – yeah its pretty good there….i will never go back there on mothersday or any other holiday, man its so crowded and waiting time to eat is like 45mins

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

panels got delivered today – permit is pending

That pic has me all sorts of excited! Hope your permit goes through soon so you can get the show on the road!

NERemodelingMember since Aug 2014

looks cool! ย hope to see them up soon

Poisonfangs85Member since Feb 2015

How many batteries are you putting in?

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

Poisonfangs85 wrote:

no batteries…so its not gonna be a off-grid project.

i actually feed in the electric i overproduce during the day….so i build up a credit on my meter…when i gonna need more like using the A/C then i use those credits. hope it gonna make sense

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Very cool bro!

Poisonfangs85Member since Feb 2015

Makes perfect cents…see what I did there.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

Poisonfangs85 wrote:

haha thats how my electric bill gonna look like ๐Ÿ˜›

rfwjrMember since Jul 2014

MM are you going to put in a battery bank later.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

nope man – no need too….dont even wanna know how much that will cost….prolly like a brand new truck or so.

and in the end my house gonna burn down like all the tesla’s on the street ๐Ÿ˜›

ย

no actually my meter runs backwards when produce during the day and my demand is not that high….the solar panels gonna produce enough during the day that i can run the ac unit with it.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

so here we go guys. my solar contractor called this morning if his guys can come out to start with the project. of course i didnt say no ๐Ÿ˜€

after his phone call they came within 15mins, i didnt even have time to drink my coffee haha

they started right away with finding the rafters, used the lag bolts to secure the rails to the roof.

the wire is pulled thru the attic all the way into my garage to a junction box, from there they have to go to the inverter next to the panel.

rails are all installed. those guys are quick….they got lots of stuff done in one day.

30x 255watt solar panels.

here a little slideshow, i gonna upload more pictures in the next 2 days….then should everything be up and running.

Lookin good MM! Just think bout all that took money UR gonna have left man!!:)

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

actually just when the panels are paid off ๐Ÿ˜› then we have money left over haha…so in 5y

Poisonfangs85Member since Feb 2015

Awesome to see them start. Sounds as if these guys might have done a few of these. And that view is killer, a little dry for a corn belt kid like me but beautiful none the less.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

thanks poison. ya they install a bunch of solar systems in the area. they know what they are doing.

the boss is doing solar since 30y – thats quite some experience. and this company was way way lower then another local company.

they wanted 6k more – kinda greedy to me.

ย

yeah its kinda dry….i like to play in a sandbox ๐Ÿ˜›

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

im up and running – will upload more pictures shortly

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

here are some numbers for you guys,

yesterday we turned on the system at around 1.30pm at we produce 27.4 kwh

today the system was running actually the whole day and we produced 48.2 kwh

we feed in more what we used but we dont get credit for that. (not yet)

now we have to wait until the inspector comes by for the final ok. then we get credit for the kwh we feed in.

in the pictures i just uploaded you can see that we feed in 6.5 kwh – so we were overproducing.

oh and i have to mention, the inspection date can be up to 4 weeks.

electric company are crooks – during that time they get free electric during the day which they can resell.

ย

here are some more pictures i added to the slideshow
