toughbox system, where do I start?

Been looking at the boxes and thinking about getting into the system, I want to store and carry power tools and small hand tools for specific uses. What would be a good box to start with and build from?

SarbatcheMember since Oct 2014

The smaller one is best for individual power tools. Like a drill that came with the fabric carrying bag. The larger ones are great for dumping tools into if your not as OCD about every tool having its own place as I am.

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

I started off with the biggest one and love it it also has the inserts for some hand tools plus the top tray it fits a lot in there

chadlanthierMember since Mar 2013

I was originally nervous about the price, and stupid me went with the tstaks. Know wish I would have went with the tough system. I can hold all my tools in 1/3 of the boxes.

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Chad there both great systems either way u will probably end up with both systems anyway I have 1or 2 of each

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

ya both are nice systems

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

I’d go with the small Toughsystem box. I have one box from the line and that is it. It is actually quite large and I will more likely than not be converting that over to hand plane storage. PLENTY of room plus the lid compartment. Also I have a TStak two drawer unit that is $35 it is AWESOME! Modular storage is the way to go….

Lboxxes – 5

Tough system – 1

TStak – 1

Sustainers I-V – 15

Totally make my basement shop smooth and easy to clean.

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

nice collection bro!

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

a little bit of everything

Samuel L.Member since Sep 2014

I really wish they made a box the size of the one with 2 drawers but make the drawers thinner and have 4 instead or maybe a combination of 1 normal drawer and 2 half size drawers above it, looking at what my experienced coworkers needed when working as a heavy duty mechanic, if they built that into it I think I might finally make the jump and buy the system. Because when we get road calls on school buses I would say a good 10-20 minutes is spent gathering tools and parts. I would love to have a grab and go solution and having shallow drawers for wrenches and sockets would be great.

Went to HD and noticed there not carrying the the tough system any more I wonder if Ridgid out sold them mayby

I heard a Rumor that DeWalt may be shifting to more Lowes based. HD currently carries lots more variety of DeWalt from Tape Mesures and chalk lines to tools and tool boxes. I sure would like to see more DeWalt in Lowes.

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

well looks like im gonna be heading to lowes this weekend I hope theyre there

BIGBEARJTMember since Oct 2014

stopped by HD and seen the new rigid storage boxes, couldnt find any toughboxes anywhere, so im getting the the rigid boxes, a lot cheaper too.

That would be a pretty big deal. Dewalt has been retailer neutral for the most part. Unlike other power tool brands that are store exclusive.

In Canada I would say its the most store based system ever. HD up here are one of the few large stores that supply most brands.

regopitMember since Feb 2013

I have never seen a Tough Box in a HD store, only online. The HD by me just started to carry them in the store the small and medium box.

DR99Member since Nov 2012

Yea my local HD was the same way the Ridgid and Dewalt Tough boxes came in around the same time. Not long after the HD was carrying the kits in tough boxes also. Lowes would carry a few L-boxx Bosch kits but it was usually special deal kits not regular stock drill kits for the most part.

They had 3 of the small tough boxes and i bought all 3.  One for all of my Drill and impact accessories bits and what nots, one for my m 18 Fuel grinder and the 3rd on for my M 18 Multi Tool and M12 M-Spector.

DR99Member since Nov 2012

Yea, I have a bunch of boxes but I need the foam to cut out inserts 🙁 Just haven’t had the time.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

I just picked up two huge sheets from woodcraft for $26 total. Will be cutting the, this week

DR99Member since Nov 2012

Damn I wonder if all the stores have it in stock that’s not a bad deal for foam.

chadlanthierMember since Mar 2013

I probably would have been more tempted to buy tough system if they had them where I could have got my hands on them.

BIGBEARJTMember since Oct 2014

yeap if i can see and play around with the larger items, i will usually more likely buy them, with rigid, first time i seen them, played with them and bought them right there.

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

ya im going to buy 1 or 2 ridgid boxes too. good price and they look really sturdy

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Yea I went to HD to buy them and they weren’t there anymore so I just told myself eh I will order them online now that was 2weeks ago

madman_usMember since Sep 2014

haha 😀 mine just stocked up on them

I would go to a foam retailer if you live in a modestly large city they are not hard to find.

My wife’s best friend is the manager of the tool department, at my local Lowe’s, and she says that there isn’t anything really happening for DeWalt expanding their presence on the shelves of Lowe’s.

I actually spoke with their DeWalt rep a few weeks back, when I bought my 40v string trimmer. He said a lot of the non-powered DeWalt stuff (hand tools, and whatnot) is Home Depot exclusive in my region (New England). I know some stores in the midwest have a huge DeWalt selection (Like Bomgaar’s). But, the “excuse” I was given, as to why they aren’t pushing for more DeWalt, is because they have better profit margins with stuff like their Kobalt line. Not sure how true that is, though.

I’ll keep bugging her about any insider stuff she might know about, and update when/if I have anything interesting.

Grumpy MSGMember since Jun 2013

Locally, in western Virginia, Lowe’s has a good selection of DeWALT power tools, blades and accessories, no ToughSystems, no tool boxes, no clamps and no hand tools (hammers, chisels, prybars, pliers, tape measures) . Home Depot has a similar amount of power tools, probably fewer blades, slightly different accessories, some ToughSystems, various tool boxes, clamps and hand tools. The Home Depot just got in some new nailers, both pneumatic and 20V Max cordless and the new 20V screw gun kits for $199.

William SMember since Jul 2015

Lowes around here has a limited selection of Dewalt and our HD closed down within a year of opening. So I go to AcmeTools and thankfully they carry everything Dewalt,Milwaukee,Makita, and they even have Festool,Metabo,Stihl,Fein etc etc. I try to stay away though otherwise I end up spending my weekly allowance lol.

Poisonfangs85Member since Feb 2015

I have the large. It holds my Milwaukee hammer drill driver/ impact, charger and two batteries. Two loaded Klein bags, screwdriver set, 3 tape measures, chisles, 2 6″ c clamps, chalk lines, channel locks, crescent wrenches…a lot!

You getting a few for a penny……….great deal.

I see I need to go hunt before you catch up. I stored them in my shelf rack so my dollies are empty now.

Hahaha. You have twice as many as me. I’d have to work pretty hard to find another 20+.

Have you noticed a difference in the boxes at all? The boxes I bought two years ago have a painted or screen painted logo. The newer ones have a decal.

77FordMember since Dec 2014

I bought my first one in November 2014….I will have to look but I thought all mine were painted.

Post a pic of the sticker when you get a chance.

They are great! The spreader option is great as well. Perfect for setting wall cabinets.

Yeah Ricky, I’m really impressed with them too. I’ve got the 50″, 36″, 24″ (2 each) thinking about picking some more up. I reach for them before anything else.
