What’s in your tough box?

What do you all have in your tough boxes?

Have you made inserts?

I know Rossi has a one with a kettle, mugs and tea bags! That is an absolute must in my opinion!!

Mr. YellowMember since Jan 2011

I have thought about using one for such purpose, but I need all the boxes for other stuff.
I’ll post some pictures of some boxes soon. I don’t use inserts. Rather use as many space available for accessories so I can grab one box and have a machine and it’s accessories with me.

Here’s one I did modify to neatly carry the discs.

Here’s another one, from my DCD985. This is why I don’t need inserts. The accessories are my inserts 😉

This is not a Toughbox, but this was how I used to carry the most used handtools. In a Fatmax Xtreme bag.

I have changed to a new DeWALT bag last week. Similar to the Fatmax one, but just a bit smaller, which is good because the Fatmax was loaded and no fun to carry around a lot.

rossi7xMember since Oct 2012

Looking good Mr Yellow.

I agree with inserts.. Might suit some people, but too be honest, I find them pointless. You would not get anywhere near as much in your drill box as you have..

Liking the grinder idea. Might have to ‘get permission’ to borrow that idea…

Here’s my Plunge saw set up in a DS300 box…

Mr. YellowMember since Jan 2011

Thanks! Yeah, why waste the space with foam or such.
I can see an use for inserts when you wanna carry a laser in a Toughbox. You don’t want that tumbling inside.
For anything else, fill it up with accessories.

The tracksaw must be made for the DS300. It fits in so well. Yours is similar to mine…
Funny, I took this pictue this afternoon when I finished using it.

And here’s the new bag…with my new ear muffs (DCR001)
Much better reception and audio quality than the previous model (RDW173). Although I liked the headband of the Radians better.

There is just one rule for borrowing my idea….to show the end result here 😉

Mr Yellow I Thank you for that grinder post. I was trying to figure out how to store the damn thing. What kind of bolt did you use for the grinder discs?

Mr. YellowMember since Jan 2011

Those are carriage bolts. There is a little more than meets the eye though.

Inside the aluminium pipe is an extended nut to connect the 2 bolts (one bolt secured with Loctite). I also used plastic endcaps of which I cutoff the cap. The remains are inside both ends of the pipe. This is to keep the pipe centered on the bolts so it lines up nicely.

DurkinMember since Dec 2012

Very nice you need to post whats in all your cases with how toos. awesome idea’s that you get sir.

SpyderwhiteMember since May 2013

Anyone got any good ideas for storing screwdriver vertically in the toughSystem boxes, i thought about using spring slips to hold them to the side wall but dont really want to put 10 holes through it.

Ive tried looking for a s/driver rail that will fit the Dewalt 10 pc set, but to no avail.

Another idea is to drill through 2 pieces of identical plastic and mount that on to the case, i dont really want to trash my case though if there is a genuine s/driver storage solution.

Mr. YellowMember since Jan 2011

The DS400 has an insert that will hold chisels and/or screwdrivers. Not sure if it fits the DS300, but I guess so since all the boxes have the same width.

The insert can be purchased as a spare part. Partnumber is 1004568-03 (for Europe)

I have taken mine out of my 400 and put it in my 300 although it won’t fit chisels they touch the lid

Emphasis on Extreme? hehe, that must have not been much fun to lug around.

Mr. YellowMember since Jan 2011

Yeah, pretty much 😉

Indeed no fun, but the DeWALT bag is still no fun either. It’s either that or walking up and down the van everytime to get the tool I need.

Frain20Member since Feb 2014

Loving what you did with your tough case Mr Yellow, Dewalt should make an insert as others have mentioned..

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

You guys are killing me. I think I’m gonna buy one and give it a try for the heck of it. I’m i retested in the structural foam and need a new home for my Milwaukee M12 collection.

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Oh and now I refuse to buy the new Milwaukee box. C’mon guys….seriously?????? Not modular, what are you guys thinking about. DEWALT has a modular….wait….two modular systems!!!! I feel really deflated. Kinda like when I found out Santa was my Dad. 🙁

wayneburgessMember since May 2012

I have 15 tough boxes from the smaller storage for fixings which I have 2 of also 2 of the 400 the biggest and the rest are 300 size.

They are brilliant apart from the side catches that hold one box to another, these are useless and snap in no tome. But in every other respect they are fantastic. And the cart may be big but it is built like a battleship and tough as you can get. 🙂

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

Mr .Yellow great idea for the grinder and disc I carry mine in a bag and gets thrown all over the place.

really cool Regopit!!

ChrisKMember since Dec 2012

Hey Regopit, where’d you get the foam? I have the same box and love it but want some foam in there to keep things in place.

regopitMember since Feb 2013

I have a place close to my house that is called the house of foam but you can  Google black foam or pick and pull foam. I paid $20

SarbatcheMember since Oct 2014

I’ve been having fun with Kaizen foam. So many DeWalt tools never came with a hard shell case or were purchased second hand and are finally getting a home of their own.

These body hammers and anvils had a molded plastic case, but it wasn’t weather sealed and developed rust just sitting in storage… I have large and small shrinking discs that I’m thinking of attaching to the underside of the lid, as well.

Nice set up sarbatche, u did an awesome job

MozeMember since Jun 2012

Just added a second small box (with the hinged lid) to the setup today so figured I’d post some pictures. I have one of the small lidded boxes stacked on the other small lidded box  – so everything can be accessed without having to un-stack anything. I still need to add some more anchors, fasteners, etc. but it’s done for the most part.

What kind of hardware you use to hold the disc.. photo please

Mr. YellowMember since Jan 2011

I described it earlier in this topic when someone asked how I made those.

Basically it’s 2 carriage bolts for one post. They are connected with an extended nut. In between is some aluminum tube as you can see on the photo. Also on both ends of the aluminum tube there are plastic endcaps in which I drilled a hole so that it would fit over the bolts. The outside part of the endcap is cut-off with a knife as I don’t need it. Only needed the part that sits inside the tube to keep everything centered  on the bolts so it lines up nicely.

As for the height. They don’t touch the lid when closed, but sits inbetween all the reinforced ribs. So when carrying it around the discs hit the lid, but the posts are longer so they can never slide off.

DiverDnMember since Jan 2015

Well I took that bait hook, line and sinker!

I bought a DS250, DS300 and the carrier.  I spent all day trying to figure you how to pack my drill, driver, charger and batteries into the DS300.

I settled on putting some of they cups from the DS250 for screws and fasteners in the bottom along with the charger, then a 1/4″ sheet of plywood flat as a divider, then a couple of small plastic boxes with dividers for bits, then another piece of plywood with the drill and driver on top of that.

I will try to get some pictures uploaded when I find time to figure out how.

John

Just a little Tough System hack for y’all. While the T-Staks have a label holder on the front, the Tough System boxes just have an indentation in the center. In keeping with the weatherproof nature of the boxes, I wanted a similarly durable label. I’ve been restacking and opening every box when I need a different tool… Paint pens are a fool proof solution (and can be had in yellow), but my local hardware store turned me onto white Gorilla Tape. I cut each label down to size using baking wax paper as a non-stick backing. A permanent marker will write on the tape well, and can be erased as needed with a paper towel soaked in WD-40.

Mr. YellowMember since Jan 2011

I was thinking about that the other day while looking at some T-Stak’s. Why the Toughsystem doesn’t have any labelling options other than printing a label and stick it on there somewhere.

If I recall correctly it has been a subject of discussion on here and an idea was for DeWALT to offer an online tool where you could design labels/stickers for the boxes. I might throw this idea to my DeWALT rep, but if KWC read this, I wonder what he thinks…

Boxes are one thing, but labelling them is a necessity to make the most out of it.

SarbatcheMember since Oct 2014

I’ve been collecting more DS150’s… I’ll shamelessly share photos of my Stanley Sweetheart chisels in one, but more notable is the carving set in the top section. I carved out the plastic ribbing in the right side and fit Kaizen foam into both sections. It really is a shame that there aren’t any of those drill bit box dovetails along the sides… Are you listening DeWalt reps?!?

Ah. The last photo is just a little tool porn for y’all. A set of 5 hand forged John Neeman chisels was a rather nice Christmas present to myself last year. These are actually the reason that I started investing in the Tough System. I couldn’t justify spending $1K+ on steel tools without a weather-proof and indestructible case to hold them.

I found some incredibly durable exterior grade labels at a craft store. Printed them with the yellow background and labels my Tough System. It worked very nicely.

I’m sure you could too, especially since you designed those stickers for the Track Saw Guide Rail.

Mr. YellowMember since Jan 2011

Yep, I use industrial grade (for what it’s worth) labels. Yellow tape with black text and it works great, but what I meant is that there isn’t designated space for a label unlike the T-Stak which does have a designated labelling space + protective cover.

The downside though is that you have limited space.

I gotcha. True. Mine hold up real well right above the DeWalt logo on the front. It’s a somewhat recessed area to protect from getting scrapped up.

But I do like the idea of having a dedicated label cover like the T-Stak.
