World’s First 15 Ounce All-Steel, Framing Hammer Offers a Powerful, Lightweight Solution for Driving and Removing Nails

TOWSON, Md. (April 7, 2011) – DEWALT® announced today the launch of its 15 Ounce Framing Hammer (DWHT51138) as part of its new line of industrial hand tools. Due to its innovative design, this framing hammer (DWHT51138) is lighter and more powerful than conventional framing hammers, offering contractors a solution that can tackle nearly all professional wood framing applications on the jobsite while minimizing arm fatigue.

“Traditionally, hammers as heavy as 28 or even 32 ounces were the industry standard in framing applications; however, the trend is moving toward lighter hand and power tools,†said Ian Harney, global product manager, hammers and demolition tools. “Extensive jobsite research with professionals has led our engineering team to use MIG Weld Technology to match the weight of leading titanium hammers while maintaining the strength and durability that DEWALT end users demand. This innovation delivers the power professionals need to maximize their level of productivity while minimizing arm fatigue.â€

The product also features a magnetic nail holding slot to efficiently set nails which will offer speed and accessibility in hard to reach areas.

Complete with a limited lifetime warranty, this 15 ounce framing hammer will be available at The Home Depot as well as independent distributors beginning in June 2011. The DEWALT 15 Ounce Framing Hammer is expected to retail for approximately $59.99.

crazy!  Where did that come from?  I know that these tools where originally going to be branded as Stanley or Bostitch, but I didn’t think that they where going to print both names on them.  Is this a pre-launch pic, or is it actually coming out?

framerMember since Jan 2011

damn, when will my local HD get these in?

toolsinactionMember since Dec 2010

i bought it at my local farm & fleet store.  $50

This hammer is only available in Canada.  I am not sure why they decided to brand it Fat Max up there, but it is what it is.

kanxrusMember since Jan 2009

It’s possible Stanley has a stronger brand recognition in Canada, then DeWALT has.

For sure.  I am not questioning the marketing, I just don’t want to sound like a “corporate drone”…  😉

Just wanted to clarify the picture.  the tool is new, the corporation just decided to launch it in Canada under the Fat Max brand.  Any other countries (according to the product manager, who told me) who receive the tool directly from us, will get it under the DeWALT name.

I was just in a Home Depot in Indianapolis last week, and Lowe’s twice.  I still haven’t seen these new tools for sale yet.  Is there a reason?

kanxrusMember since Jan 2009

I saw them at my local Orange box yesterday. Out front and center. They had the screwdrivers, tape measures, chalk lines, knives, hammers, and a few other item’s.

CTDieselMember since Jul 2011

I will take a peek inside my local HD tomorrow while I’m out runnin around and report back…at least for those readers who might be in Indy.

Dewalt hand tools will not be carried in Lowes. Lowes is carrying the Bostitch line and HD is carrying Dewalt.

Hey guys please excuse my stupid question but I was wondering what the attraction to this hammer is? Everyone seems really excited about it. Is it just because it is lightweight? Obviously I don’t swing a hammer for a living but I am just curious what makes so many people so excited about this one.

yes, the light weight is a huge feature.  It is an all steel hammer (better durability), with a 15oz head.  The cool thing about the light weight however, is that it still drives nails as fast as a 22-28oz hammer.  Swinging heavier hammers causes all kinds of problems for framers, as well as just being tiring.

If this the same design as stanley hammer.this hammer have big issue like. One guy at rona returning is hammer because the claw of hammer twisted and one working with me returning is hammer cause the handle just come out of is hammer.I hop dewalt fix this two issue.

The hammer IS NOT the same as the stanley hammer.  The only place where this hammer is the same as Stanley is in Canada, where it was branded as Fat Max instead of DeWALT.  Stanley has a similar, all steel anti-vibe hammer, but it is not the same materials, same geometirc design, or weight.

golemMember since Dec 2009

the only difference is they change yellow for balck and black for yellow ;D

Are you saying that you know two people who have had issues with the Stanley Mig-Weld hammer, or another kind of Stanley hammer?

kjonesMember since Oct 2010

golem wrote:

The branding has all been explained on here many times, so I won’t waste my time going into it.

I have a handful of the hammers and have put them through hell, and I have already sold a number of them to commercial construction carpenters, and none of them have had any problems.

only the stanley 15 oz have this issu the guy at rona told me dont get this hammer. It dont worth 85$

I found the hammer in another HD today.  I was quite disappointed to see that it’s 60 darn dollars.  I thought everything else was pretty fair priced and I expected the hammer to be about 40 or so, but 60?  I’ll pass at that price and I’m betting I’m not the only one that will.  If I can find it for 40 tops I’ll buy it, but no more than that.

kanxrusMember since Jan 2009

You need to understand the market the hammer is competing in. It’s going after the Stiletto market. The Dewalt Mig-Weld has all the benefit’s of a Titanium Hammer, without the $200 price tag.

Get the hickory handled 17oz hammer then.  As was said, the 15oz hammer is going after the super premium hammer market, and in that market, it is an absolute steal.  For people that do not want a super premium hammer, they have the option of the hickory handle 17oz hammer, for a lower price tag.

deshiMember since Jul 2011

I bought the 15oz one and it’s great. I used to use a weight forward estwing so maybe I’m not the most knowledgeable. The only thing that bugs me is I didn’t know a smooth face version was available as I would have preferred it.

Russ1393434539Member since Nov 2011

I’ve used several hammers in the past (Stanley, Crafsman, etc) and while I am not a framer, nor do I use a hammer in a professional setting, I can earnestly say, using a lighter weight hammer does make a difference and also doesn’t make your arm as tired.

Several years ago, I replaced all the wood surrounding my friend’s spa for him and while a heavier hammer do make the job easier, after several hours, was a tad bit tiring.  But this product from Dewalt seems pretty cool, all steel but only 15 oz, but it’s as strong as 21 oz hammer, if not slightly heavier.

Considering the average work load for a framer and the fact they use their hammers daily, I can easily see how a lighter that delivers more force would be useful.

I was hoping for some black friday pricing on it….no go!

cyclone700Member since Jan 2011

If you had a Rural King nearby, they had 40% off all Dewalt handtools all weekend.

CTDieselMember since Jul 2011

Ah man, they’ve got some Rural Kings around, but the closest one I know is a 45 minute drive….

Given how crazy Black Friday’s have been in the past and present, it would be worth going to store to get this that day.

Although I strongly doubt the average Black Friday shopper would even buy a tool like this, much less even know what it is.  Okay, that was mean, but I don’t really mean it in a rude fashion.

But CTDIESEL, have you checked Amazon for this item?  I’ll be honest, that is where I get most my new tools these days and the prices are much better than most brick and mortar shops these days.

CTDieselMember since Jul 2011

Russ, Amazon has pretty much replaced Lowe’s or any other store for my big tool purchases.  I’ve scored awesome deals that Lowe’s cant touch the past two times I’ve used Amazon for tools.

I’ve had issues with mine.

I was given a 15 oz. Fat-Max version, which is exactly the same except for the branding, and within about three weeks, the adhesive within the handle had come loose.

It’s an easy fix, I used some super glue, but annoying none the less.

Aside from that, I’ve had no issues with the hammer and highly recommend it!
