DeWALT is introducing a new 20v max battery called Powerstack that foregoes the cylindrical cell system for a flat pack design. It will be available later this year. Here is a good read about it on ToolGuyd. https://toolguyd.com/dewalt-powerstack-battery/

Lots of info available on Li Ion cylindrical, prismatic and pouch cell batteries.

Here is a nice comparison link.

Prismatic

Pouch

Tesla will not use pouch cell batteries, instead remaining with 7,000 18,650 cylindrical cells.

Possibly DeWALT will remain w/ pouch cells only for their smaller Ah packs for safety reasons.

Hope it will reduce the size of 6Ah/8Ah/10Ah batteries to the size of 5Ah batteries.

We just went to the event and looks like a cool new concept.  More power, more run time and a longer life battery.  Basically the 1.7Ah battery we saw there is equivalent to about a 4Ah battery.  So I would think when they come out with the 5Ah, it would be close to a 10Ah battery.  Not sure if it really equates to a 2 times the higher you go but either way a big improvement on power, size and longevity.

The event was great, Dewalt always puts on a great event.  Yes, they have some new tools but it’s everything that has been circulating around such as impacts etc.  The biggest news was the battery which seems awesome since you can get more power, runtime and a longer battery so it seems like a big jump in the power tool world with the stackable packs.

Yes talked with the Dewalt product manager and battery people to get more background.  For the price and other battery information, I have it at the shop and will post once I have it in front of me.

This sounds like a game changer.

Troublesome size and weight brought on by giant batteries make the experience of an otherwise good tool much less.

I am invested thousands into the Makita and Milwaukee battery systems so I could only hope one or both follow suit. It seems to be like the better power in a smaller space like a 9 volt battery over cylindrical batteries.

Lots of hype but no real data yet. Just wait for review videos that will actually tell us their run time/capacity VS the same size of the 18650/etc cell battery packs.

Personally I don’t see the need but will enjoy the lowered pricing of existing 5ah packs once these come out. Won’t be buying them any time soon considering the price of 5ah packs are still insane in the stores unless bought with a combo of some sorts. I have 5x 5ah. I only use 3 in my tool bag. One is still brand new. I’m good.
