I just bought a 1983 Skil Roto Hammer and I’m wondering what I’m in for. I’d like to know where I can get a manual for it and whats most likely going to need maintenance first before I fire it up. This is the biggest drill I’ve ever bought and its advertised in good running order but I wont be able to see for myself until it gets here. Also any info on where to get parts and bits would be sweet. I’m a hard rock miner and I plan on abusing this thing a little bit so the more info the better. I’m thinking about going with a drilling steel and replaceable tips. What can I do to get my drilling speed through the rock faster with my vintage toy? Thank for any help and advise. Jason

Maintenance all depends on the drill and it’s condition. It undoubtedly could stand to be opened up, have the dust blown out, and lubed up good.

Replacement parts may be tricky. eReplacement parts usually has damn near every part known to man, but this is a 30 year old drill we’re talking about.

As for the manual, I’d email Skil customer service to start. They should either have one, or know where to tell you to look.

Do you have a Bosch service center in your area?

Jason LaPortMember since Sep 2013

I dont think I have a Bosch service center close by. I can buy Bosch from my local home depot but they dont service them.

I don’t know how much you paid for I hope not too much, but Skil for the most part has been relegated as a value brand by Bosch. Like conductor mentioned parts might be hard to find with it being that old the plus side its probably spline drive so you can still get bits for it. I’m not the biggest rotohammer expert, but you should be able to find bits at most places online. For a manual try searching the model number some one might have scanned it and put in on the internet, or like hit up customer support like conductor also mentioned.

Got it in the mail today. Its not even close to being pretty by any means. I’m definitely gonna clean this as best I can inside and out before I even think about firing it up. I keep hearing the word spline drive, still not sure what thats referring to. I’ll try to get it all cleaned up tomorrow and see what she sounds like. Thanx for the advice guys.

Spline drive refers to how the bit attaches to the chuck most rotohammers use SDS bits now. Spline is used on the bigger demolition hammers and such.

Thanx for the info. I got it cleaned up on the outside but still haven’t found a parts diagram that makes me comfortable with taking it apart. Looked like it was rolled in grease an battered in the finest saw dust you can find and then sat in a corner of a dirty, dirt floor garage for the last 20 years. I still dont want to start it without cleaning the inside first. Doesn’t look like there’s any oil in it either so that makes me wonder just a little bit too.

Compressed air will blow most of it out. The rest you can use CRC QD Electric cleaner or similar.

I can’t seem to find an adapter. From what I’ve found online it looks like I have a 7/16″ hex bit and I’m hoping to find a 7/16″ hex to sds adapter. An ideas where I can find one or if they even make them?

This is the drill that I bought. In one of the pics you can see the shape of the bit is different. It has a narrow part in the bit where a spring clamps onto the bit. I need an adapter with that narrow spot in the bit. Its Hex to SDS that I need but I’m not sure if they make one for my dinosaur of a machine.

Jason LaPortMember since Sep 2013

That’s the closest I’ve seen but thats a spline bit not a hex. I’ll probably be making a few phone calls tomorrow. Thank for the help man.

I think you looked at the PB-SDS. The P-SDS description says…. SDS ADAPTER FOR MILWAUKEE AND SKIL 7/16 HEX TOOL.5300 AND 726 SERIES

Jason LaPortMember since Sep 2013

Yup I did. I didnt see it last time and thought you meant the PB SDS. Ok so its a pretty penny but with that I could get bits from the local store instead of shopping online. Thanx man. I’ll bookmark that page until I get a few more dollars. Should be in a week or so. Thats awesome!!

RedSionnachMember since Aug 2013

Not a problem. Glad to help.

Jason LaPortMember since Sep 2013

Well I guess I dont need the adapter now. Less then 2 hours drill time and the drill is dead. Now I’m completely drilless.

DR99Member since Nov 2012

Sorry to hear that 🙁  Hope you can get back up and running soon.

Jason LaPortMember since Sep 2013

I will but its gonna be with something better. Gotta start looking for stuff to sell to get my dream machine. Hilti TE50

LMAO Took me a second to get that. I was like, “Do I really seem that boring?” LMAO

Jason LaPortMember since Sep 2013

WooHooo back to my boring ol’ self tomorrow. The Skil is still alive. The plug in was falling apart. My buddy gave the one prong a little tug and pulled it right out. He checked the brushes, changed the plug and it fired right up. Just as loud as the last time I ran it so hopefully tomorrow is game on until I get my new drill and trade in my other one. I’ll have 3 drills within a week to hold me until I save for my hilti

RedSionnachMember since Aug 2013

Cool. Always awesome when it’s an easy fix.

Jason LaPortMember since Sep 2013

Yeah I know, I was a little upset with it and stuck it in the side of the bank by my rock wall bit first and left it for 3 days. Then my buddy told me to bring it over and I ran back up to get it. Looks like I’m back on track to as far as saving towards an adapter and some good bits. The bits I’m using with it look like their 20-30 years old. I’m wonderingwhat potential this beast has. If it treats me well I might buy another one in the future. I’ll try the adapter and new, better bits first and see how I like it. I might put the hilti on hold until tax return time.

I have a Skill Rotor Hammer used a few times and is in near mint condition with a bunch of bits in the original box. I was wondering what a guy could get for it. My father gave it to me but have no use for it.

Thanks

I have a Skil 726 Roto Hammer that has served me well, but now the hammer function has failed.  The bit doesn’t retract to be struck again and I have been told this is due to a worn out seal.  Does anyone know where I can have this serviced, or where I can find a new seal?

Thanks!
