Hi all.
Does any of you own a set of easy outs or left hand drill bits? I’m currently looking for a set of those, not because I really need right now but just to have in case of emergency, you never know when you will break a bolt and I hate running to the shop hunting for this kind of stuff when I’m really busy.
I have read some reviews about a set of easy outs form laser tools which some guys say that they snap while trying to unscrew a bolt
If any of you uses one of these sets, what make do you guys use? Where did you buy them?
I like the Irwin 11119 set myself. It comes with the east outs and the LH bits so there’s no guess work involved. Any of them will break under the right circumstances, but a good quality set is a must. The Irwin 11119 has USA made easy outs and Brazilian made drill bits. It retails for around $35 on Amazon.
BTW, Welcome to the forum! 🙂
The Irwin set is great, I believe Eric and Dan did a review on it.
Thanks. I am a member for a while already.

My apologies. I’m using my mobile device as I’m in Florida for work, and the mobile setup doesn’t show join date or post count.

I remember them reviewing the Irwin T&D set, but I don’t remember the easy outs. I’ll have to look that one up.

I was wrong they did the screw and bolt extractor set. And you are in florida right now.
I would go Irwin too! Also they need to make us an app!

Yes they do haha!

Yep, Jacksonville. Driving home in the morning.
Oh Well you had some good weather.
Yea, it was like 83 and sunny today.
I don’t like the spiral easy outs, expand on the broken fastners too much. The straight flutes are better. There is the mig welder metheod too if part of the broken off bolt sticks out, welding a nut on it and this does work.
I went on a mini buying spree last night. I ordered the above referenced Irwin easy out kit, a set of Blackhawk Crows feet (SAE), a set of 1/2″ impact extensions, a pair of 537 Channellocks, and some fuel line clamps. I will report on the easy out set when it comes.
What site did you order all that from?
eBay and Zoro Tools
Got the Blackhawk Crow Foot set for $59 brand new on eBay. They typically retail for $110.
Yeah I have found some good deals on ebay. I got a Kobalt 1/4 in and 3/8 in on ebay for 25 because it was missing a 5/8 socket, otherwise brand new. Retails for 70.
The Irwin 11119 set came today. On initial inspection, I’m very pleased with the quality. The easy outs are USA made while the left handed cobalt bits are made in Brazil. I’ll try to do a write up on them, but a real world test situation doesn’t come along every day (for me), and it’s kind of tricky to accurately reproduce. I’ll try and work something out though.
What do you think about Irwins new impact bits?
They certainly look nice and if Irwin’s claims pan out they could be a very worthy option. Haven’t used them yet though.
They look like the shockwave

I thought so too
I just picked up some of the groove locks, they feel very good, any experience with them?
I carried a set around Northern Tool for an hour last week before changing my mind. They’re still on my “things to get list” though.
What do you think about the IRWIN brand?
My limited experience with Irwin pliers has been positive. I’m just a Channellock kind of guy. Being perfectly honest though, in that style of plier the Knipex Alligators are probably the best.
Irwin brand Vise Grips blow.

I almost walked out with the Knipnex, but I like how you just push the Jaw on the Irwins and they adjust. I got the GV10 and GV8 in a combo for 20, I have some Irwin speedbore that i am very happy with. I almost bought some of the Irwin visegrips a couple weeks ago.
That’s a fair price on the pliers. The 2 piece Channellock set typically runs $25.
The only thing Irwin Vice-Grips are good for is pinching the shit out of your finger when releasing them. When you decide to get some locking pliers let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction.
Go ahead and point me in the right direction haha.
Blackhawk offers a 5 piece set model # PT-1105S. They have them on eBay right now for $35. I don’t have them, but everyone that does seems to be very happy with them. That’s a great price and my experience with Blackhawk as a brand has been very positive.
How is there warranty?
I guess this will work for uploading pictures but here they are in the box:
Won’t let me view it Chase. I tried to find a way to increase the upload size limit, but I can’t find it. I’ll try and get some info. We’ll call it a project in the works
Sounds good, i tried it another way by copying and pasteing but it said that that type of posting is not aloud on this site.
Well, I got to use my Irwin 11119 screw extractor set for the first time today. I was tightening up the transmission cover on one of my Cubs and the bolt (1/2″ Grade 5) snapped clean off. Considering it was over 50 years old and rusted up, I don’t suppose I can complain. I figured I was up the creek. I popped the left handed drill bit in and before I got the hole deep enough to tap the easy out in, the damn thing spin right out on it own. I’ve never been much crazy about easy outs, and I have broken them in the past, but I’d never used them with lefty bits either. I’m not sure how they would fair on a bolt torqued to 100+ ft. lbs., but at 50 ft. lbs. (estimate) they worked fantastically.
