Cordless impact driver question

I’ve heard a lot of good things about cordless impact drivers and have taken the time to find out quite a bit about how they work. I understand that there is a hammer and anvil mechanism inside which creates additional torque by hammering on the side of the bit.

A lot of people online are saying that the great thing about the cordless impact driver is that they do not use any additional battery power to produce these high impacts. How can this be true? Where is the power coming from if not the battery?

Cheers,

It is a little misleading but it is splitting hairs, the mechanism does as  you say apply via a  hammer and anvil type set up apply a rotational impact force to the fastener via the bit.

But it does not take more amps from the battery per revolution compared to most drill drivers. 🙂

Once you use an impact driver to drive screws you’ll never use a drill to do it again. The impacts reduce the likelihood of stripping the fastener heads and it works remarkably. As Wayne said, the design of the clutch allows the impact action to work by cutting out at the determined torque limit rather than reaching for additional amperage. If you don’t have one, get one.

Also, this weekend found me adding a door jam extension to my existing jam. I removed the threshold which had I had held down with untreated screws (doh!). Impact gun…bangbangbangbangbang screw out! No can do with a drill! That impact mechanism works just as well in REVERSE!

With the right bits Pal there are so many uses for them.  🙂

Amen to that! Impact driver = 😀

No impact = 🙁

It’s amazing how many people don’t use impact rated bits in their drivers.

You know what? I’ve been using the black Dealt ones and I have had a few of them break! Its always the fins on the Philips ones! Driving me nuts! I was thinking about trying Milwaukee’s.

I use the Milwaukee Shockwave stuff and I’ve been happy with it. Driver bits are consumables and don’t last forever, but I get acceptable life out of the Shockwave’s.

It is worth investing in the Dewalt Impact clutch attachment which will fit in all impact drivers and stops you snapping anything like as many bits.

It also works in your drill equally well.  🙂

Will do guys! I will give them both a try. Sorry about the spelling issues, I normally do these via tablet, I am on my laptop right now and noticed wherever I put Dewalt it substitutes Dealt!   Thanks for the input!

Well, I normally count off for spelling, but we’ll let it slide. Hell, sometimes Wayne doesn’t even speak English, well, not our English at least, and he has been known to post in Russian.

Hahaha! Yup we bastardized English! But Russian!?!
