That’s a cool hobby Rich and quite a beautiful piece of property!
That’s cool, I see it’s gotten higher tech over the years

I’ve always been interested in a ham radio set up. Need the license. Maybe when i buy a house instead of rent I’ll fulfill that hobby. Like the trees all around the house for seclusion. That’s the way to go.
Sweet layout !!
very cool! How did you get into this?
i once did a service call for an older gentleman who was a radio finatic. It was fascinating to see his collection, and fun to see all the joy he had to talk about it
cheers
@mike_dave back in the 70s everyone was into CB including my parents. I was in my teens at the time and had fun messing with it too. That stopped for a few years while I was racing cars and chasing tail. In the mid 80s after being married a few years I decided to get another CB. One of CB guys I knew got his amateur license and I thought if he could do it, I could too. So I took a class and passed my Novice test.
Back in the “old days” there were five licenses. 5 words per minute (WPM) morse code copy was required to pass your first (novice test) along with a theory test. The next technician license was theory only, the general license was next and required 13 WPM and another theory test. The next license was theory only and is the license I received within 6 months of starting and kept for 30 years. The top class was Extra Class which originally required a theory test and 20 WPM code test.
They have since dropped the requirement to copy morse code and there are now only three licenses to take. I was bored a couple years ago and went and took my test for Extra Class license. Really did not need it but gives me some extra privileges and just wanted to accomplish that.
Here is a slide show that shows some of the stuff better.
Love the country setting, I wouldn’t be able to live in town..
Slick setup, it looks very nicely put together, whatever it is i’m looking at hahah
Well I have spent 30 years in the city so this is a new venture and like you I could not go back. We enjoy the privacy and the wildlife.
Its been quite an adventure. We bought the land about 8 years ago and hired an excavator to come in and regrade the creek banks and install a 60′ long culvert so we could have a drive over the creek. I cut down about 50 trees and had him uproot what was left and we burned all of it.
I did all the AutoCAD work for the house plans and then general contacted the projects hiring the major trades. We hung cabinets, did all the tile work, custom built cable railings for the stairs, installed electrical and plumbing fixtures and well as lighting, switches and receptacles. Built two decks (one more to go).
It worked out well but would never do it again. I just dont have it in me!
Here is a picture from the street when I bought it. As I said… quite an adventure.
You said too much now you have to show us! In particular I’m interested to see what the cable railings look like…
Pretty slick work Rich!
When I’m not working, fiddling in my shop, or wrangling kids, I coach youth sports and make all the other wives jealous with my handyman abilities and movie star good looks. I guess that would make my hobbies coaching and breaking hearts ?
But seriously, I don’t have much time for hobbies
Thank you sir!
That’s incredible!
Thanks guys. The railing was the easy part for me. The slate wrapped treads had me hating life.
I only wish I had started drawing in 3D before building them. At that time I was working in AutoCAD 2D so the design work was a lot harder.
I have since redrawn the house including railing in 3D (see below) and it would have made it much easier to concept if I had that ability at the time.
very nice good job!
Awesome work Rich! Fantastic job all around sir!
Absolutely stellar work Rich !!!
Top shelf work!!!
Hobbies Eh! I have a lot of hobbies, has I like to learn new things, and I try to incorporate the different hobbies in with each other.
My hobbies include, woodworking, scroll sawing, woodturning, model railroading, creating dioramas, building model kits, slot cars, geocaching, and going trackside to watch and take pictures of real trains, Shortwave and Scanner Listening. I also have a General Class Amateur Radio License.
And I am sure there will be a lot more to come, has I have a long list of stuff I would like to try.
The house we purchased had about 20 fruit trees on the property and a green house. I added 20 different varieties of fig trees, 5 australian finger limes, 2 Yuzu lemons 1 myer lemon etc. I also put in a bunch of raised beds for growing veggies. We even have worm bins in the basement 🙂
I’m also an avid Systema and BJJ practitioner.
Thats awesome dude, I love fruit bearing trees, problem is that they make such a mess in the yard

I am also a Ham Radio guy, sad to say that I had to sell off my equipment when my lady lost her job.
Say it’s not so! Sucks! It sounds like a lot of fun tho.
Oh boy you want a weird hobby, here’s mine.. So here’s a little hobby i’ve been into for little over 10 years since my senior year in HS..
Tip of the iceberg…..
Anybody wanna take a guess?

Pretty cool, any issues getting Bio diesel vehicles to pass smog? I’m sure Ohio is not as bad as CA though. I’m having issues getting my Dodge / Cummins to pass. It keeps saying misfire monitor not ready. Dealer and smog shop only tell me to keep driving it.
I finally called consumer affairs and there is a known issue with 04 05 dodge / cummins. Dealer is supposed to flash the computer. I have appt for Tuesday, hope it helps.

No testing here in Ohio for that, very lenient…
One account I heard of is that the engine needs to idle a little higher than normal during the test for whatever reason. I’ve lost a ton of my old contacts on this subject since the popularity fell flat and things died down.
Just so you know, I’m running straight oil through, no biodiesel itself. Hence the separate tanks and valves and filters

Very nice man looks slick . how long did it take
I would say it took me about a week to build. Everything is TIGd so there is no grinding work except to radius the 1/4″ mounting plates and to clean up band saw cuts. Another 3 days at the powdercoater.
My CAD drawing were right on so I just built everything to print and left the top rails long and installed them to make that joint come together.
Biodiesel?
@KnarlyCarlProcessing cooking oil?

Yes, filtration system that I was using a centrifuge to remove the sediments but it all broke apart slowly and long story short, it hasn’t ran for a year or so, it’s kind of frustrating because of how difficult it is to work with it. There are different methods out there to filter the oil but the centrifuge was absolutely incredible.
So I’ve lost of a bit of enthusiasm for it but I’d like to get it running again sometime…..
We messed with making our own biodiesel years ago too. Kinda fun for awhile. Always was cool to smell the exhaust.

Had a buddy years ago who did the same thing. He would collect the cooking oil from local restaurants and make his own diesel. I think he said he had to add some type of chemicals to it. He drove for almost free while he had the truck.
