I have had the privilege of testing out the SURGE for the past month and all the hype is truly accurate. It is as powerful as regular Fuel impacts and super quiet. While using the SURGE I continually have the feeling it is set on a lower setting. Noise and vibration cause this affect. You will not be disappointed in this tool!

Can’t go wrong with a red impact

I have 3 other Fuel impacts and the SURGE will run beside them without fail! The sound it makes does make me think for a second everytime I pick it up. Many, many hours of the traditional impacts so ears aren’t accustomed. Maybe they never. Nice and quiet is fimlne by me! You’ll find it perform as good as the others with the added benefits SURGE offers!

It runs with them up to a point. Then it is soundly trounced. The sweet spot/niche it fills is something other impacts can’t do though, that’s for certain.

That’s for sure! It handles 90% of fasteners but not the big stuff so much.

Milwaukee sent me a surge to review and it quickly became my favourite! So quiet! Keeps up with my M18 impact. I just wrote a short blog about it.  http://jrrusticdesign.blogspot.ca/2017/01/milwaukee-m18-fuel-surge-hydraulic.html?m=1

Whaoh hey what’s up? Another IG name I recognize! As you may have seen, they sent me one as well….forget where i put that tidbit of info here on the forum though…

Yes, love mine, it’s become my favorite, even over the feature packed onekey impact!

Todd HMember since Nov 2016

I ran this against generation 2s and a onekey. Fastening pole barn steel with 1 1/2″ pole barn screws. 5 hours on site. All ran off same battery. 2 4.0 ah and 2 – 5.0 ah. Bigger fasteners may reveal the difference but for this application the performed the same.

Knarly! Good to see ya! I totally agree. I got the one key as well and I’m only reaching for the surge mostly!

I did some side by side testing with a surge and a M18 one key impact and the surge often times was faster with 3 inch deck screws. It handles self tapping screws great too. But using 6 inch lags is where she started to lag (lol) behind the impact. Technically it’s not designed for big stuff. But regardless, it’s an amazing driver! Much quieter!

6 inch lags or rss tech screws is a job for 3/8″ impact. Or maybe even the 1/2″ with converter tip. Right tool for each job. I pay for most of my tools so don’t hunt moose with a bb gun!

My fasteners size will probably range from 3/4″ to 3″ screws, it’s what the surge is designed around and it does them easily. The biggest thing is in sheet metal, the difference is a dream!

Yup! Only thing I was surprised at is the 5.0 batteries. I was hoping for some slim pack 2.0s because it’s not designed to be a monster power house, so I was hoping for a lighter weight impact.  I think they should have done that instead….

I hear ya. I get some free gear with the expectation for the manufacturer to test them out and see what they are capable of and post my findings. It’s a messy job but someone has to do it!

The surge is not designed for lags that’s for sure but I’m just curious.

hmm i got some stuff from Southwire, kinda put it on the back burner, i should probably get around to posting about that soon LOL

Although no one has ever mentioned about expecting to have them tested, so technically, you could just forego that little detail HAHA

I received a red one a couple months ago. Nice for grab and make a couple cuts but corded on my job sites when framing. Not long enough runtime even with a couple 9.0 ah in arsenal!

Yeah I hear ya. The whole M18 vs flex Volt discussion is a whole other story but I like how the dewalt miter can plug in as well if you do run outta juice

I have gotten info from a rep that they are going to introduce a plug in adapter that will power all m18 tools soon.

Makes me wonder what the compromise will be; size, weight, or price. My guess is it would be multiple of those.

No idea. Actually overheard area Rep with store manager talking about it. I asked him and he said it is not far off.

That would be awesome, particularly for some of the heavy draw tools that would be more stationary like miter saw, flood lights, and others. Maybe not so great for a drill, but could always be useful in a pinch.

What ever happened to the 3 that were supposed to be given away? Never heard anything since the video was released.

That’s odd that they would ship the new Bluetooth speaker with a standard AC adapter like you find on most smaller electronics if they plan to release a 18v shaped adapter. I’m glad the speaker can be plugged in or powered by a battery, but it seems pointless to include a solution that they are essentially replacing in the suspected near future.

BremonMember since Dec 2014

On that note @jtkendall it annoys the hell out of me that they pack those insultingly bad wall warts in with stuff to begin with. Dewalt toughmusic is the same. Everything is tough except that one detail lol. Ridgid and Ryobi fans get it right and the M18 fan gives you a POS wall wart.

I got to run my surge a bit today, I love that impact gun…. I doubt my one key fuel impact will see much use in the future.  I gave my buddy the one key to run and we raced driving 5 in screws into a 4×4. It was pretty close speed wise, but the noise difference is so nice. It just sounds like a sewing machine.

I actually won one. The Surge is definitely my favorite impact over the brushed one and corded one I have. The only thing I have noticed it struggles with was [External image (www.homedepot.com), not copied]

It did not struggle with [External image (www.homedepot.com), not copied]My application has been mostly indoor fasteners for mounting tech/office equipment. The quieter action does make a difference in that setting.  I have also used it for decking screw applications and it has preformed well.

BTW I typically use the Fuel Drill for drill bits like the one above, but some times it is simply easier to carry around just the impact and throw bits in and out of it.

There was a company already making these for Milwaukee, Dewalt and Bosch(I think, maybe Makita). The website is gone now. If you search for “losgatos adapter” it should pop up. Wish I would’ve gotten one a long time ago. They looked like quality units and advertised great specs for amp draw.

I totally agree with this. My hearing is badly damaged anyway but it greatly benefits my residents when working in their apartments. I’ve had noise complaints from using my impact but none from the same people when using the Surge. The feel of it is different though at first, almost like it’s trying but not doing anything. Love it.

Yeah, it’s an ingrained need to use a drill with bits like those, and I never think of just using my impact for drilling. Maybe one day I’ll drink an extra cup of coffee and get creative with my impact LOL

Any one know if this would be a good choice for automotive or body shop use?

Well it’s going to put out less peak (nut busting) torque compared to an impact and it’s physically bulkier. The big plus is quiet but body shop work generally leans towards work that should require ear plugs anyway (hammers, grinders, impacts, needle guns, metal saws), especially where removing bolts is concerned so my thinking is no. I’d see more use in having a variety of impacts like a little stubby one, a mid size (around 250 ft-lbs) and the monster 1400 ft-lb bust or break tool. Use torque sticks on the mid size to save time tightening bolts instead of a torque wrench.
