Not heading for the East Side, but I am moving into the current century.
After suffering through the hellish gauntlet of ISP extortionist who provide substandard internet service to people in rural WV at 4X’s the cost of normal service because we have no other option, we’re finally able to get DSL ?
To most people this is no big deal, but after several years of paying $140 or so a month for 20 gbs of data that may or may not work right at any particular time of day, this is huge. To be able to use the internet like God intended, actually utilize net based TV features and services, let the kids actually use the internet, and save $100 a month…….that’s a pretty huge deal for us.
Which brings me to my question, what do you guys know about Amazon Fire Sticks? Is a jailbroken Fire Stick worth fooling with, or is it a lot of hype for nothing?
Holy shit do u live out in bumbelfuck $140 for 20gbs that’s is horrible good to hear u got better internet man . I have no idea about the amazon stick are you talking about the remote
First off congrats Travis and second the fire stick Is pretty damn nice bro we’ve had ours for about a year now and watch all the theater movies some times quality isn’t there but can’t really complain though either that’s stick paid for itself in 2 movies cus I probably spend about $100 bucks for my family of 7 to have a good time at the theaters

I second Mike! I just got Direct TV again when we moved for a year but the last two it was Metflix and Amazon Fire Stick only in the house. It is awesome.

So Fire tv has a way to stream current theater releases? Is it like VUDU where you can rent the movies individually, or is it another subscription within the fire tv? Sorry for all the ?’s, I’ve been a Roku user for a while, so I’ve never bothered to look into fire tv, since I can access my prime video library from the Roku.

@CATERPILLAR That’s the thing, I don’t really live too far out in the country. High speed internet service in WV is pretty archaic. I’m only 1-1/2 from one town and 2 miles from the other. It’s in the country, but not BFE or anything. DSL service has always been available up to about a mile out and the people 3 or 4 houses away in either direction have had it as long as we’ve lived here, but those of us in the middle have been screwed.
@Bigmikez and @ChrisK Do I need a separate Fire Stick for each TV or how does that work?
ok isn’t most of this stuff on a smart TV already as of late?
@Conductor562 any time there is a money grab people in power will take advantage….

After we were talking the other night about uploading catalogs I figured I’d try calling Comcast and Frontier again. Still no Comcast service (I’d have rather had them) but Frontier does offer DSL out here now, so I’ll take what I can get.
well seeings that they have the technology for this and 90+% of the population in North America uses the internet pretty much the same as breathing this shit should be damn near free for everyone…..
same with house phones, don’t even know why I still have one don’t think it rang in 2 years

I only have one bro and move it from room to room if needed and it runs off your wifi but u do need a strong wifi or else it will buff a lot, we had to up ours when we first got it
I have two, one under Samantha’s account and one under mine. But yeah, you have to move the, from tv to tv
Are you limited to one per account?
Dam $140 a month is a lot
it’s awesome now that u have internet

Yea, and each additional 10 gb block was like $80 or something ridiculous. The month I updated the kids PS4 the internet bill was like $300

I’m not sure Travis. I can tell you that each of our sticks have an associate account and for me to use Samantha’s I would have to reset the stick. Based on that I would assume so but I don’t know if there’s a back door around it. I have had a fire stick since they first came out and got mine discounted because I pre bought early. The second one was full price. I imagine you could buy a couple under the same account?
Get a fire stick and put Kodi on it and you won’t need anything else.
They’re supposed to be here tomorrow afternoon to install the DSL. It’s like another Christmas ?
Jesus I have had high speed internet from like 97/98 on
The new Roku stick for 39 bucks is the highest rated one I have seen. I got one during Christmas and it is great. It works much better than using the smart TV as a streaming device for some reason. I believe you can use more than one on any account. I have Amazon prime video and Netflix here at home. Check out “Goliath” on Amazon if you haven’t already. Billy Bob is great.

I have 4 Roku’s in the house. On stick(1st gen) a 2,3, and a 4. 3, and 4 are on Ethernet, and the stick and 2 are on wifi. We definitely had to step up our wifi in the house

I agree on the smart tv thing. I have a Roku on two different smart TV’s because of the interface and the latency (in my case) even on a hardwire connection.

i’m still running a HTPC on my main big TV in livingroom, I have the box hidden in the rafters in the basement and all wires are hidden through the floor wall it acts as a server from the other computers in the house so if I download anything it is all stored on that machine sit down flip source on TV and bingo watch what I want.
No DSL today. They called and said it would be the 30th ?
I guess I’ve survived this long
Well, they sent the guy out and he, quite unfortunately, says our box isn’t set up yet so we are unable to get DSL ?
Im crushed. He did say it is in the works and thinks it will be available within 6 months.
I feel like my dog just died ?

I’ve been wanting to build an HTPC for years! My buddy Chris would be pissed though, seeing as he wants me to build a better gaming PC first. I don’t make enough time to watch tv, so I’ll probably build the gaming pc first. My little Alienware is struggling!
Here’s the pc we built for his wife earlier this year. [External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied][External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied] Chris got her a closed loop liquid CPU cooler.

What a week! Ran out of data with 8 days left in my billing cycle, so next to no internet, and the home button on my brand new iPhone crapped out and had to be sent to Apple for repair, so a few days with an antique phone and no data to load shit on it to boot.
I live in technological hell. Absolutely shameful that in this day and time a simple Internet connection must cost as much as a car and is still insufficient.
The Railroad has a big realignment announcement coming next week and is starting the 1 man crew shit again.
Living the dream I tell you, living the dream ?
Wow feeding you line after line….. And how was it not known you box isn’t setup at your house? You would think they would have they info available to tell you upfront….
I have DSL fortunately… Unfortunately the speeds are horrendous being on the end of the line apparently?? I’m just grateful it’s unlimited tho

Life working for the railroad or around the railroad is rough. I just got my bump papers from GE Transportation. My layoff is approaching.

Good for you man. Have you picked an area of schooling ?

I’m looking at electrical. I think I’ll like that. There was also industrial maintenance with the addition of wind and solar power attached to it

No that’s petty cool. I’d love to get into electrical work at some point and the State will pay for one class a semester at my tech center. I’ve got a year and a half to retire and have been toying with a trades education when I get done. Good for you bro!
@ikepete: Guessing you’re in Erie? I bet things have been rough for you guys too.
I’m so sick of the RR I could puke. Going on 14 years of their bullshit and have nothing to show for it. They’ve cut hundreds of jobs and still cutting more every week.
I’m not sure how much more of this I can put up with honestly. It’s definitely time to start thinking about an exit plan. Biggest problem is there just really isn’t anything else around here.
Hope everything works out for you man.

I’m at the Grove City plant south of Erie. We build the engines that they put in the locomotive in Erie. Both places have been hit hard. I don’t see things getting better for the railroad. Especially if they decide to finish building the pipeline.
For the most part I have enjoyed my time where I’m at. It was a total change from my previous job. Not everyone can say they worked on a 42,000+ lbs engine
What would you do if you had the chance to get out?

@Conductor562 seeing as you have an apple device you may want to look into an apple tv. Apple devices tend to work well together. It’s got an app store with plenty of apps, large selection of tv and movie content from netflix, sling, apple, and many more, has siri, and is a hub for homekit enabled smart devices. I am sure the amazon fire stick is great but I don’t know how well it works with apple devices. Another option to consider is the Roku.
Didn’t realize it was that bad everywhere else too. All the companies here are in survival mode too. Railroad seems to be doing alright here at least until the river opens back up in the late spring.

Anything transportation I would be worried about self driving cars/trucks are going to decimate that industry quicker than people think.

I just attended a summit in Mass in Movember the week before my son was born. Part of the summit was discussing the automated vehicle. This, the day after a beer delivery was made in Colorado. One of the serious problems with automated cars is factoring in the ability for the vehicle to break the law. This is important when deciding whether or not to collide with a pedestrian in the roadway, causing a collision with another vehicle. There is still a lot of work to be done with this and some very serious research to still be done. Remember when one of our car manufacturers was hacked a while back? Imagine the usefulness of smashing automated cars and or trucks carrying hazardous materials or passengers like a coach!

It’s happening. They basically told us that the trucking and airline industries were going to do it, and they were to.
Trump did the executive orders on the DAP and Keystone pipelines the crude tanker was one of the things that was working for the railroads. Just from the economics I don’t think coal is coming back as an energy source natural gas because of fracking is just killing coal with the numbers.
Metallurgical coal is the only type of coal there’s any future in.

Sorry your going through this man….BUT in recent news a driver-less Uber car ran a redlight in San fran during its debut. Uber says it was ‘human error’ but we all know instances like this will happen more and more as time goes on. People will regret this technological shift at some point. Heres the youtube vid….it happens at 0:09sec

Chris I agree with you 100%! There will be unknown robot errors that could jeopardize the lives of civilians….and no doubt at all that hackers will do anything in their power to create disasters like you mentioned above. Going to be a nightmare for sure

The Human race is very smart but we do have faults. Greed, Jealousy, Envy, just to name a few….. we are naturally destructive to others and other things as well. We are working everyday with experience, technology and new developments however one of our biggest problem is having these emotions. With emotion we will never all be on the same page. So in saying that you can design, build, use anything but with emotion involved it can be ruined just as fast.
Well, still no DSL, but Verizon is offering unlimited mobile plans again starting tomorrow, so that will eliminate the biggest part of the problem ?
