Just specific parts of my basement. I am planning on building a garage in the relatively near future and my shop will more likely move out to that area (bigger shop=bigger tools) so the walls are actually temporary and are not anchored to the foundation but rather pressure fit in place and anchored to the ceiling joists.

So when should we expect New Shop Underway… Part Three?

Well…..IF…..I build the garage, part three 😀
There will of course be a need for permits etc etc etc. If the garage idea falls apart or I decide to keep the basement shop, I will be adding a new floor to the shop, securing walls, insulating and adding some type of heat source. It’s a wee bit cold down there right now!

I was just noticing in that video, sweatshirt, winter hat, you don’t have it heated!!?? hahah gotta keep the Festool collection happy!
I see you pop that 1x against that square guide piece, the track hinges down on your mark where you need to cut, and you just pop the track saw on it and make a perfect square cut, GENIUS!! That’s actually so cool, I’ve heard of the MFT table thing before but don’t do enough of this work to pay attention to it’s capabilities…..

Not really a shop update again, but….
http://jrsknives.com/products/neckr-number-5-kydex-sheath
I bought this knife the other day, it came in today, from Jr’s Knives. I have been trying my hand at instagram and saw one of our members repost, whatever the heck that is, a giveaway for one of his knives. I bought this knife and I’ve got some initial impressions. Naturally this thing cost an arm and a leg but it’s an American craftsman made knife that will hopefully last a lifetime. The knife I bought is a Neckr model with walnut burl handles and is quote striking to look at. It comes with a kydex sheath. Although I haven’t cut Anything with it, I have developed some initial impressions of the knife and sheath. I spent a $145 on the knife and it seems solidly built with an incredible finish. The knife will need a light honing but is quite sharp. The sheath is meh. No belt loops or slots and it appears to be designed to be used with a g-clip (I seriously don’t know what the heck that is, I looked on Amazon and it’s some type of Molle like system. I will say the sheath is solid and holds the knife in place quite well. I will not be carrying this on a Molle type carrier though my tac rifle vest would support it. My purpose for this guy will be an EDC rescue tool and the thickness of the blade shows this will be well suited for the task. We will see how it fares in the shop too but if I remember I’ll try to do a review after some real world use. I will say, this guy seems like a well made investment in a tool that should hold up quite well to some serious use. Good looking stuff. I just got that same spokeshave a couple weeks ago. Have not had a need to use it yet but will 🙂
I think the Shapton is the way to go. I am going to get a 10 or 16 thousand for the final and probably the 1000 as well. I love my trends for flatness but cant say I am thrilled with the edge they leave.
Is the Veritas the 4 1/2 you were talking about getting?

Yuppers Rich, that is the Veritas 4-1/2 smoothing plane with the PM-V11 blade. The fit and finish is beutiful and though I would love to have the Lie Nielsen I really wanted to try this out. My next one to be ordered, hopefully for next month on my birthday will be the Lie Nielsen No.62 low angle Jack. I am hoping my Wife picks up my subtle hints
that I have been dropping but…..I’m saving my pennies ?.
Back to the plane. I purchased some large 10″ wide white pine boards for a Dutch toolchest. Additionally….This week I am purchasing rough milled pine or hemlock for an English stile bench. I just bought the tail vise assembly from
https://www.hovartercustomvise.com/product/vx20w-wagon-vise-hardware-kit/
yesterday. I will be using this new Veritas for all of the smoothing applications and will hopefully form a beaming opinion over the next month or so as I make headway on these two projects.
Looks like a nice plane. Cant wait to hear your thoughts but I am sure you will love it.
My #62 is my favorite plane so far. Makes a great shooting board plane too. I bought the “hot dog” for mine for that reason.
I need to know more about your vise 🙂 I am 105 videos into Cosmans bench build series and am more confused than when I started. I dont think I want to go to the level of build he has. Also, last week I had a head off my hotrod and engine parts laying on the bench. Was thinking… do I really want a “nice” bench. So not sure what I need.

No problem dude. I actually am watching the English Woodworker series and purchased his video series. I’ve been leaning towards a Nicholson with a tail vise and a face vise, this plan I am reviewing in conjunction with Scwarz’ book is a modified Nicholson, a true English bench. I’m not a mechanic and I’d rather lose a nut than use my Festools and a handmade work bench in the repair of any car. The nice thing about the bench I’m going to build will be mostly Pine or hemlock with hardwood vise components. I am still in the possibility phase if building a garage which will mean my bench will have to be moved. Making a hardwood split top roubo would literally and physically and mentally and all that other crap kill me to move it. A pine bench might be a little bit easier (not really, those two inch hemlock rough dawn boards are friggin heavy. Back to the project, I was looking g at purchasing Marc’s plans but the bench though looks beautiful is a little bit out of my realm of reality right this moment. Having a slab topped bench as opposed to a monolithic top is much more manageable for me. Maybe in 15 months when I retire but not now.

Just saw this on Shannons youtube channel ?
Well I’ve been dreaming enough of this so today I made good on the start… I just bough 8 Hemlock 2x8x14 rough sawn sticks at Cameron’s here in Farmington NH and brought them home for a $103 price tag. I also stopped by the USPS and picked up my Stanley 207 bench dogs I bought on eBay. This is going to be a fun and hopefully inspiring project for me.[External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied][External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied][External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied][External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied][External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied][External image (uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com), not copied]

So no pics today, and don’t really know why I update this but….
This weekend, I finally finished wiring in the shop. Lighting is done, yesterday I added two separate outlets, both ceiling mounted, one line for the DC unit, the other for the Sawstop. I also finally installed the Grizzly air cleaner which created its own set of issues that I resolved.
I had to do some rust repair to my table saw, I had a small leak from one of the copper water lines that dripped onto my table top and even got a speck on my bandsaw table so they are both soaking in T9 Boeshield till tomorrow then I’ll hit them with Renaissance wax (oh yes, the name of a the basement woodworker).
I ended up listing some tools on CL to clear out some floor space in the shop and put some money on the coffers for later on but hopefully by Fridayish I might have some pics to post.
What did you put up for sale?ChrisK wrote:

I just sold my TXS drill set and I have the rail edge guide set plus a brand new OF1010 up for sale on CL. Never used the 1010, bought a new set a couple of years ago but the 1400 has been my primary router big and small. Been using the heck out of my 1400 and 1617 and have great plans for the 2200. Also sold my Dewalt 12v drills. Loved them but to much stuff sitting.
Any Progress is good progress !!! Glad it’s coming along……
@ChrisK you interested in selling to tia? or just local?
So got some great things in the mail today. Also some great news from the AWESOME neurosurgeons at Mass General. I am clear for work, my GP has me still at home with some light duty to follow shortly, but I can pick up my beautiful son finally and start increasing my excercise. Great news because I am going to be putting these gorgeous new tools to use right away. I got two sets of new card scrapers from Lie Nielsen, curved and straight, a burnisher from LN and two GORGEOUS chisels from Blue Spruce Toolworks. This will be a two part order, I ordered a Bench and a Butt edge chisel from Blue Spruce and then next one coming in will be a Dovetail chisel. From LN I have the sharpening jig on the way.also, not pictured is my new PDC from Festool, I’ll post some soon.

happy to hear of the progress …..

Awesome! I really want the LN chisels. With the guild discount it will take a little of the price off. Let me know how you like the new honing guide. I liked it a lot at the hand tool event.

Not only should you, you should take a couple of days off next week and come visit. I have been home recovering from my “issue” since Christmas Day and am feeling much better. My Wife gave me the nod and next week I am planning on going to Warner Maine for a quick visit. About a three hour drive each way in the Mustang to a little business that is famous for making those chisels and planes. I might get myself a brass no 4 or a cast iron 4-1/2…… And sign up for a spring class 😇 I have been stagnant too long!!!!
I’m jealous! I just watched their open house/how their planes are made video the other day. I had heard somewhere that they do a discount at their store. Do you know if that’s true? I forgot if you own a guild project. If so ask for the discount while you are there.ChrisK wrote:

Both of those are very nice planes. I was actually surprised how much heavier the 4 1/2 is than the 4. I would probably get the 4 and the other later. The 7 1/2 low angle jointer was smooth as silk. Give that a look too. A lot cheaper than the regular #7.
Glad you are doing much better. We don’t need any more of us gone. Take it slowly, don’t ignore anything, and enjoy getting back into your routine.

Thanks brother. Yeah, things are getting pretty bad.
And yes, 10% off at the store just like TWW. Buuuuuuut….you have to pay 5-1/2% sales tax 😕 Believe it or not, NH there is NO sales tax! I think I’m going to push myself for being out of the house and I’ll take a 4-1/2% reduction 🤙 off the price!
Decidedly, I went to Lowe’s today and ended up getting a Wood magazine with an awesome quick and dirty build plan for a compact solid bench. I ended up getting some kd fir 2x8s and got them stacked downstairs tonight. Looks like I’ll finally have a bench in the shop while those beams I bought last year wait till spring for me to make my English bench. I figured this would kill two birds with one stone…get a bench in the shop so I can get back into action and allow me in my current condition to lift these things 👍😇🙏
Hopefully tomorrow I’ll have the top assembled as well as the matching lower portion. Maybe a bench sometime Monday?

Will do Buddy!
Not wanting to even compare this project to @rrich1 beautiful work bench and after being cleared to resume physical labor in incremental stages, I received a copy of the newest Wood magazine. I’ve been planning my Nicholson for a while but not being able to even move in my shop let alone lift the 16’ framing timbers I’ve had out back for over a year, I opted to get this short quick an easy bench started with KD Pine. Today I got the upper and lower bench tops cut, planed and jointed. My Superman dust collector is awesome….Tomorrow I’ll trim the boards down, though the plans call for a 5-1/2” rip I’m thinking I’ll go a full 6” and possible double up the top and forgoe the storage. Not a hundred percent sure but we will see. I’ll head over to Woodcraft and pick up a cheap face vice for the right front face (I’m a south paw) and get the dog holes drilled as I see fit. The overall length of the bench top is a mere 60”. My Dewalt planer and Powermatic jointer got a fun workout and my Kapex made smooth ends all the way around. Hand planes to follow 👍👍👍😎
TA DOW …. TA DOW …..
now we rolling ….. go get ‘em (slowly of course) glad to see you got back in the shop
Nice job Chris. Keep posting the pics, I saw the bench and wondered how it would be. Don’t have any room for more in my little shop.
Looking good dude ! Great progress
