Should I take the grease out(black gunk) and add more also can’t find brushes
Yes, remove the grease and replace with more modern equivalent. I don’t know if they still make brushes specifically for this, but I have been able to get other brushes and sand them to size for similar projects. Good luck!

These are the only things that look like brushes it is a long spring that can be pulled out and they hook on to the wire. What kind of grease should I use and would Homedepot have it
