Friday I recieved a 100ft Auto-Rewind open reel ProTape manufactured by U.S. Tape, for a belated housewarming gift from one of my cousins. She thought it was something unusual that would come in handy. She was disappointed when I thanked her, but told her I actually already own two of The Original Loggers tapes manufactured by Spencer, one 50′ and the other 100′. I thanked her for the thought, and asked her, since I already own two similar products, if she would mind if I gave it away. She agreed, so here it is.

Up for grabs is a N.I.B, U.S. Tape ProTape model 900B 3/8″ x 100′ auto-rewind tape. The replaceable steel blade is printed on both sides with Ft./In./8ths and stud locations. It has a blade lock, a folding engineers hook, and a swiveling snap hook to hang on a belt loop. Weight is about one and a half pounds. More info here: http://www.ustape.com/servlet/-strse-17/Spencer-Protape-Auto-dsh-Rewind-Autorewind/Detail

I’ve never used a tape made by U.S Tape, unless they oem somebody elses, so I can’t really speak to the quality of this product. After a little research I discovered that Spencer Product co. quit producing tapes in Seattle in 2009. U.S Tape in Pennsburg, Pa now builds The Original Loggers tape and the other open reel auto-rewinding tapes, so it’s safe to assume that Spencer sold their patents. Plus the directions in the box are still the Spencer directions. I’m glad to see that they are still American made, and, if the tape is the same standard as Spencer, then it’s a quality product.

I’ve used my Spencer tapes not only for measuring logs, but vinyl siding, gutters, fencing, landscaping, stud and truss layout. The tape only goes to eighths so it’s probably not the best tape for a cabinetmaker or someone that needs very precise measurements.

One of my log tapes.

1) What are “lizard piss marks” for?

2) Photographer Darius Kinsey took a photo of an unusal structure in Edgecomb, Wasington, what was it?

3) The timber industry uses many animal nicknames, choker dog, landing rat, donkey puncher, etc. What was a “grease monkeys” job in logging?

4) What are the 3 main uses for a scrench?

5)The ending scene in one of my favorite Paul Newman movies involves his character tying his dead fathers severed arm atop a raft, flipping the bird to the people on the banks. What is the name of that film?

Just wanted to commend you. That’s very generous of you. Can’t think of much people to give off their surplus.

I don’t need one but just wanted to commend you for your good deed. I wouldn’t know the answers anyways

RedSionnachMember since Aug 2013

Thanks Javier. Chase and Kato are both close although one of you is just barely off. Not saying which.

RedSionnachMember since Aug 2013

Javier, I made a promise to myself a while ago that I wasn’t going to have any tools that I’m not going use or fix to sell. Since this was a gift I don’t feel right about selling it. Also, I’ve won stuff here so I’ll pass it on.

KatoMember since Jan 2014

It’s a pretty cool thing to do, I’m the same way, if I have it and never use it, I give it to someone who needs it. I’m not the type to hang on to material things, especially if I don’t need them.

NicholasShetleyMember since Nov 2013

1. To mark equal lengths for roofing trusses.

2. Cedar stump house

3. To grease the skid road to make the logs move easier.

4. Tighten a chain on a saw. Removing spark plugs on chainsaws, weedeaters, ect. Removing chainsaw bars.

5. Sometimes a great notion

Hey Red! Wicked nice of you to do that man! As far as the contest….beats the heck outta me. I’m really scratching my head on the movie though!

NicholasShetleyMember since Nov 2013

Thanks for doing this Red!

RedSionnachMember since Aug 2013

Winner winner chicken dinner! Good job Nicholas. PM me your shipping info. I’ll get it out in the next couple of days. Kato missed it by removing the spark plug. As for Sometimes A Great Notion, if you can find it you should watch it. The ending will make you smile for sure.

Great giveaway Red. I like little giveaways like this. Always nice to pass along something you don’t need to someone who does.

Highdesert SplintermakerMember since May 2013

Hey nice giveaway, nice way to do it, and congrats to the winner!

Now, does anyone out there have an 8″ helical jointer or a 13 helical planer they’d like to give away?

I do know the answer to, Who is buried in Grant’s tomb? Anybody want to take a guess?
