Hi,i have just bought a DeWalt DC 410 battery powerd grinder. It performs realy poorly so i suspect it might be a piratecopy. Is there any reliable way to tell if it is a real DeWalt. This model has the older style stick in battery and there is only two contacs to be seen when i look down where the battery will be inserted but on the battery there is three cntacts, are the third one on the battery just for the battaeycharger..

If anyone has any ideas please post a answer.

Best regards  Göran

Welcome to the forum.

Contact DeWALT to see if they have a way to determine real versus counterfeit.

It may be that the old 18V battery is tired and a new / fresh battery will provide expected performance.

Some more information would be helpful, possibly a picture.  Was it brand new?  I highly doubt it would be fake just because the old stick style are becoming somewhat obsolete so I just don’t see the market for making fakes.  The other question I would have for you is what kind of performance are you expecting?  Those 18v grinders definately don’t have the power of a corded grinder and were kind of limited to cut off wheels and light grinding.  They were also pretty battery hungry and even your 18v xrp batteries were only 2.4ah where as now most people running a cordless grinder effectively are probably using at least a 4.0ah.

The 18v stick pack grinder doesn’t have much power to begin with. I would imagine it is probably a genuine unit. A picture would probably help us determine if it is genuine or not. If you want more power you might be able to try getting the slide pack adapter and using a 4 amp hour or 5 amp hour. They can provide a bit more power noticeable in some higher demand tools.

Hi thanks for your answers.I will try to post some pics in this reply. The battery is brand new but it is not a DeWalt oroginal i Think and that might be the reason for the bad performance. When i tested the grinder by cutting of a 5mm X 15 mm “about the same as 0,2 X 0,6 inch“iron rod,it managed 5 Cuts Before the battery died.

Old tool = Possibly fine, possibly not.

Knock-off battery = Junk

Second that.  Knock off batteries are known for not always performing very well on high draw tool.  I’m not a battey expert but what Ive learned is even though they have a 3.0ah rating they might perform okay on a lower draw tool like a drill but on a tool like a grinder the battery drains faster than normal.

You’re battery is definitely the problem, I’ve got the same grinder which performs reasonably well for an older style machine when run from old original 2.4 amp nicd dewalt batteries. I bought some what Iooked like original dewalt batteries from eBay and became suspicious when my grinder lacked power and the batteries quickly faded. I then got confirmation that the batteries bought on eBay were fake. The first give away was on the kitchen scales the copy batteries weighed slightly less than the originals. I also then bought a 3 amp hour compatible battery from an ebay seller with good feedback. This battery also was gutless and nowhere near 3 amp hours but by my reckoning probably less than 2 amp hours. I then got an original battery from an authorised dewalt dealer and my grinder then performed as expected, ps I’ve also used the converters for running older tools with lithium batteries which keeps the older tools working though I’m careful not to over discharge the lithium batteries as the battery protection is built into the lithium tools. Warning! you discharge a lithium battery too much you’ll ruin the batteries very very quickly.
