5 Tools Every Woman Needs in Her Garage

4

Maybe you are the kind of woman that doesn’t know the difference between a Standard from a Philip’s head screwdriver, or maybe you are the kind of woman that can replace a transmission with your eyes closed. Either way, there are certain tools every woman needs to have in her garage or close by. These are tools anyone can use regardless of experience and are super helpful for a variety of scenarios.

We put together our list of 5 tools every woman needs in her garage so you can be the do-it-herself kind of girl you know you are.

5 Tools Every Woman Needs

Cordless Drill & Bit Set

A cordless drill and bit set are not just tools every woman needs – every person should own these once they leave their parent’s home and are an essential part of every home tool kit.

Picking out a cordless drill is also a big decision. Due to the dominance of battery-powered power tools, this purchase will likely decide what brand you choose for all future power tools, which can be daunting. My guess, if you’re reading this you are a beginner and you should stick to a more affordable consumer brand. I recommend America’s favorite consumer brand, RYOBI because they provide great quality, variety, and are available at The Home Depot, which is the largest hardware store chain in the world.

Also, if this is your first power tool purchase then you should purchase a kit that includes a battery and charger.

Car Battery Charger & Jump Starter

We’ve all done it. We have left the lights on in our car, the door slightly open, or some simple mistake that drained our battery and now the car won’t start. Now maybe you’re young and new to car ownership, but a dead battery doesn’t necessarily mean your battery is bad. Your battery likely just needs a charge or a jump start.

Now, you can decide if you want just one or the other, but I recommend both of these products. I think a car battery charger is one of the tools every woman needs in her garage so she can charge her or her friend’s car battery in an emergency. A jump starter is a great tool every woman should have in her car because it can provide just enough spark to get your battery going when you’re out and about. However, you need to keep your car running for a while to restore the battery. If you’re not far from home, it’s better to just charge the car battery on the charger once you’re home.

Another perk of a car battery charger is that you can also recharge the batteries of other seasonal vehicles that need help waking up after the off-season, such as an ATV.

Air Compressor

Air compressor? I’m not installing trim or putting up a fence. Why do I “need” an air compressor?

Yes, an air compressor may seem like an occasional-use tool, but anyone who owns one will tell you they are definitely multi-use (and awesome) and one of the tools every woman needs in her garage. They can be used to refill your tires, assist with cleaning, or even help you fill up the blow-up pool before the kids’ birthday party (speaking from experience).

When it comes to air compressors, the power is measured in horsepower (HP), pounds per square inch (PSI), and cubic feet per minute (CFM). CFM is my favorite way to assess an air compressor’s power as it tends to be the most accurate. So if you need an air compressor for a specific project, use this to help you determine the right air compressor for you.

Wrench Set

A good variety of wrenches can help a girl out on a number of home projects and repairs. This is why I recommend a wrench set that includes a variety of socket wrenches as well. I like socket wrenches because the ratchet provides torque that at least helps me with tightening things while using little force, which can make them easier to use than a traditional wrench.

Locking Pliers

The last on our list of tools every woman needs in her garage are locking pliers. Locking pliers are a tool you didn’t realize you needed until you have them, and then you wonder how you lived without them.

Locking pliers come in handy for a variety of household tasks. However, they are particularly great for holding something securely that you don’t want to come in contact with your hands. I recommend locking pliers with a one-handed release. These are just easier to use, particularly when working in tight spaces. Locking pliers with cushioned grips are also more comfortable to use than other models.

Final Thoughts

This list of tools every woman needs is great if you are new to DIY. However, once you get started you might realize that you really like taking on house projects by yourself and are wondering…what else does a girl need? The truth is, anything a guy would need.

These tools will help you on a variety of projects. After you’ve taken care of a few problems you’ll most likely want to take on more. You’ll want to research what additional tools you’ll need. And hopefully, you’ll have determined your preferred battery platform when adding to your line of power tools.

We hope this list and advice helps. If you have questions about tools for specific projects, let us know in the comments and we’ll talk you through your project.
