Plain and simple, lasers are cool and an invaluable tool to have around. They make life easier and make your finished project much truer. There are lots of different types of lasers on the market today. Some designed for tile, indoor use, outdoor use, layouts and more. However if you need a laser for outside and need distance, you have to move up to a rotary laser. While they do cost more, the benefits outweigh the cost. Which brings me to the Johnson 40-6522 Auto Rotary Laser. We have tested a lot of other Johnson level products and the one thing they all have in common is the quality. Johnson doesn’t mess around, they stay true to their roots and build a quality product. The 40-6522 is no different, this is a quality laser level that will produce great results and last a long time, so let’s jump in.
This laser is a 360° rotating laser level that is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The unit allows the user to use this level as either a horizontal or vertical laser. So one huge advantage is the freedom you have to use this level in different ways and different environments. Another huge advantage is the self leveling feature. The unit has an auto level of ± 5°. The unit comes with a variety of accessories, but two main accessories are the detector and remote, which allows the user to use this unit outside with a working range of 2,000′ at an accuracy of ±1/16″ at 100′.
Since this is an outdoor laser and will be exposed to the different elements, you want a tough laser. This has an IP ratting of 66. So you have the highest dust rating possible and one of the highest liquid ratings. The only other higher rating would be to have this submersed in water, which this laser isn’t meant to do. With the IP66 this does mean you can work in the rain and not have to worry about damaging the laser. Remember it’s not waterproof, just water resistant. Basically the IP66 is the highest rating you can have for this type of laser. For indoor use the unit has two adjustable line lengths and two rotation speeds (120 & 500 rpm) for increased visibility.
Some of the other features this unit has is an electronically controlled dual slope feature, visual and audible alarm when beyond leveling range and auto shut off.
Johnson 40-6522 Laser Level, Auto-Level, 4 Modes
Setting up and using this laser really couldn’t be any easier. Press a couple of buttons and then start your layout. The sound of the detector is loud enough, so even in noisy conditions, you can hear when you are at your desired point. Inside, the laser line shows up very nice and is very easy to see. The detector did a great job on the outside as well picking up the line. The case the unit comes in is very nice and sturdy to help protect the unit during transporting and storage.
So what is this laser good for? Well what isn’t it good for? You can use this laser to set foundations and footings, align and plumb walls, establish diagonals and footings, contour framing, drainage, concrete pours, metal and wood framers and more.
