You heard it, Bmack vetoed my use of crapsman ratchets that are probably 10 years old that I inherited. So with that being said what should I get?

break them all and take them back see if you get new ones…..

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

At least mine are USA, they’d probably just give me some Chinese garbage.

Protos. About 60 for a 1/2″ pear head and 50 for the 3/8. Great ratchets. No regrets. They have options so you can go short arc swing for tight spaces or wider swings between clicks gor torque and durability. If you’re looking for a lower end option the performance tool double sided ratchet is really convenient. I have sheared seized manifold bolts with a crescent 3/8 with no problems. Pittsburgh ratchets will hold their own if you are on a budget. And in between option would be a black hawk, sunex, tekton, and Stanley in that order.
StercorariusMember since Dec 2015

Proto is the only patriots choice.

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Ill look at proton, Pittsburg aren’t much of an upgrade from craftsman.

Jimbo at the shop I have the 204pc Dewalt mechanics tools and they work great man the only downfall that I can find is that the actual ratchet body is pretty bulky but man we’ve really out a beating on those guys and none have failed yet seriously if these had came out when I first started at the shop I would’ve just bought these instead of spending big bucks on other brands don’t get me wrong I love my truck box tools but I spent way to much money on those guys. Other than that I really want to add some proto to my box

BMack37Member since Sep 2015

I like the Pittsburgh ratchets more than Craftsman. Proto is great for USA made but I like Gearwrench 120 XPs, great price and they’re smooth.

I suggest getting some Super Lube for anything that you buy, it will make an ok ratchet, much nicer…it will make a nice ratchet, fantastic. Even my low tooth count Williams ratchets are smooth as Pierre McGuire’s head but a lot less noisy and weird.

NicholasShetleyMember since Nov 2013

I use a 100 tooth Carlyle roto head ratchet and a long 90 tooth as my go to ratchets. I love them and have never had an issue with them so far. They are available at your local Napa auto parts. The 90 tooth was just a bit over $40. If they were to break warranty would be a breeze too. You just take it to the store and they hand you a new one.

BMack37Member since Sep 2015

Those Carlyle ratchets have a pretty good reputation too.

Yeah I by no means was trying to equate Pittsburgh’s to protos. Opposite ends of the spectrum. Protos are really nice. They make beautiful pieces.

I have owned the roto ratchet for over three years now and it hasn’t skipped a beat. I have used the 90 tooth for everything and there have been a few times where I should have used a breaker bar and it still has held up fine. Both are as smooth as day one. I’d highly recommend them.

I have some black oxide box end wrenches and proto does not disappoint you as far as finish quality goes. Some of the best chrome I’ve laid hands on too.

I really like the dewalt set, despite how heavy they are.

chadlanthierMember since Mar 2013

I bought a craftsman mechanic tool set on eBay once. I was beating the ratchet on muffler in a moment of frustration and broke the switch . Brought it to ace hardware and they replaced it without question.

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Problem is I don’t want the newer ones, for now I’ll try some lube like Bmack suggested.

Nothing really, just old and a little rough in the gears, Bmack was teasing me a little in my YouTube video I used the 3/8″

You and Comp just got me to spend over $200 today, I’ve gotta return the favor haha

SNAP ON ONLY! If you’re not using Snap On you might as well be using your teeth.

You can probably get a rebuild kit for it.

Oh ok. I love my Snap-On dual 80 ratchets. Their a bit on the pricy side work great in tight spaces. I’m also a big fan of super lube. Their almost silent since I added some super lube.

I believe Super Lube is what Snap-Ons come with…but I think they only put a dab on the moving parts, none on the engagements. Some recommend not putting some on the teeth but I haven’t seen any downside, it doesn’t make the ratchets I’ve lubed slip. I’ve heard some recommend something less thick (like engine assembly oil) for higher tooth count ratchets.

Also Armstrong’s ratchets are highly thought of but they aren’t cheap. I think a lot of people would be impressed by Williams Taiwan if they used Super Lube.

Can you tell I was in the market for ratchets last year? haha. I did tons of research.

Ha ha Ive been looking at Protos, ill have to check out Armstrongs and Williams

BMack37Member since Sep 2015

The Williams and Gearwrench will be cheaper than Armstrong and Proto but I still like them. I have a fondness for the Williams handle as it was the style of my first ratchet. Williams would be around $25, Gearwrench 120xp around $30-35, Proto and Armstrong are above $60. (All 3/8″ prices)

Conductor562, our resident hand tool expert Admin would put in a vote for Proto and he really knows his stuff.

I think Gearwrench offers the best bang for your buck. You can probably check them out locally if you have an Advance Auto Parts nearby.

stainlessstroker95Member since Aug 2015

I like the ratchets that came in my grey pneumatic duo socket sets. You can buy all three sizes together here.

http://www.amazon.com/Grey-Pneumatic-8912BRQ-Precision-Ratchet/dp/B002YK7D68

They are also available individually. But if you can swing it, just get one of the duo sets. Not sure how much you know about them but they call them duo cause they are impact rated but thin like a normal hand socket set.

. Agree bro the snap ons are very nice I’ve gotta remember to take a pic of my collection when I’m at shop this week
NicholasShetleyMember since Nov 2013

I’ve only used new snap on dual 80s and they have too much back drag for me. I don’t know if they eventually wear in and get better though but new they are horrible. I like them other than that though.

Your killing me with these ratchets bro!

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Pulled the trigger on two proto rachtets.  In the 3/8″ I went with the chrome quick release, 45 tooth, I also wanted a 1/4″ ratchet, ended up with a black 72 tooth that was cheaper than the 45 tooth quick release.  The 1/4″ is a round head and the 3/8″ is a pear head, hopefully my OCD doesn’t kill me for non matching ratchets.

That would drive me nuts! Looks like you need to pick up two more ratchets already! hahaha

JimboS1iceMember since Sep 2015

Your right dude, I found the 1/2″ to match the 1/4″ for a good price, but I want a 1/2″ in quick release… Alkshfblisajbfsailjfvasijfbvaklsfjvklansjfnvlaskjfnvsakljnfv [emoji36][emoji35][emoji857][emoji848][emoji17]

Hard to go wrong with Proto,I really love Gearwrench ratchets thou.  The only proto ratchet i have is a 3/4″ drive pearhead, ill try and post up some pics later. i have a bunch of Craftsman ratchets, they are all over 20 years old thou, and they still work well, maybe one of these days ill go thru and regrease them and such

BK13Member since Nov 2013

There’s a ton of good ratchets out there….

Snap On Dual 80s or their Bahco clones

Armstrong MAXX

Wright

I want to give the Proto version of the Facom Palm Control ratchet a try

SK have a following, though I don’t really like them

I like my GW XP120

The Pittsburg Pros with the red and black comfort grip are pretty smooth and hellaciously strong… I had to remove an over torqued lug nut and little 340# me was bouncing nearly all my weight on the end of the long handle, probably 450+ ft.lb.

You say those Pittsburg ratchets are strong?

Hey jimbo, how about you stick your new impact wrench on a cheap pittsburg ratchet with a square-square adapter so we can see how strong they really are.

If I recall correctly from prior sciencing you just can slip a 9/16 12 point socket onto a half inch square.

Sounds like a video project to me… Figure out which Rachet model you want to see and I’ll see what I can do.
