Shop tip Use the Eraser end of a pencil as a sacrificial digit instead of your own. The Eraser end still gives good grip and is very accurate.

I remember doing this with my dad. Awesome way to get your kids in the shop and introduction to tools and making stuff with their own hands. (Which mine have done since they could walk LOL)

Exactly When you see a Tiger cub (first year about 6yrs old) come in with one that is pristine and custom paint job or what ever. This does nothing for that kid. You will learn more by doing than being told how to do something or watching someone else do it for you

Yeah for the most part I have them always wearing a pair. When we first started cutting I had to stop the band saw tell them something start it back up and restart it. Every time I stopped it they would take them off and I wouldn’t catch it till later (Worried more about them chopping fingers off or a million other things And I know it only takes one time. but yes I agree. That is one of the best habits to get into.

But seriously, this is very cool, never did things like this, we just worked on the farm or the construction site with my Dad, never any of this fun stuff ha.
Can’t wait to get my son into tools and building and making things like this, uh-oh better watch what I get him started with, he’s going to drain my bank account!

When mine were about 4 or 5 instead of buying them plastic toys Id buy them harbor freight hammers and tape measures etc.,etc., They use them and still have them today

ya those times may not mean much to them at the time but some day they will remember those times I know I do about my father showing and teaching me stuff when I was a kid pretty much everyday………
Yea especially in today’s world having memories of working with tools with your dad is beyond priceless, it’s a shame how many kids only grow up with one parent.

Nice, brings back memories. If only I knew as a kid to polish my axles I would have done better than 3rd damn it! Nice jobs on the cars, I particularly loved the camo pickup and flag draped gunner car.
Thank you for all the kind words Ill be sure to pass it along. They are TIA fans too!!! (rasin’em right)

Very cool stuff. My boy (Parker) and I just did his first pinewood derby car this year. We only had 3 days to work on it since he just signed up for scouts. We had fun putting it together, but we didn’t fair well. We were close to the bottom of his den if not last.
On another note, when I was a scout, we finished close to the bottom each year as well.
Next year we will get it right.
Pick up truck designs work great because it places a lot of the weight in the front, then to make the weight for the weigh in usually your allowed to put some weights in it in the front to speed it up.

Follow my tips in the videos they will help alot. The best thing is get the axle installer tool. Your axles go in straight you get the correct spacing between the wheels and the body. Then polish your axles.
place most of your weight 1 inch in-front of the back axle and get as close to 5oz as possible. Good luck next year. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask. Ill do what I can to help you.

From our testing 1 inch in-front of the back axle has given us the best results .
Congratulations to you and your boys! MY boys were not interested in the scouts, but hopping the Grandson will.
