Hey guys, those of you who follow the HD permatheead for deals saw I found some WIha bits on clearance. These are their terminator impact bits which are pretty cool. I’ve used them a bit and they feel nice, they have torsion you can feel and a little case that I played with for hours.
So in the spirit of thanksgiving for being a part of this crew, I am going to give away a set of these, it’s a small set, just 7 bits with a magnetic holder and a really awesome case. Great time of the year to charge my score with you guys, hopefully this will go better than my last give away.
I will randomly select a winner on thanksgiving so good luck and happy turkey day!

Wow man,was this a result of the bit test you wanted to do? Very cool of you. Wiha makes excellent stuff.

No Bmack was conducting the test, not sure if he had an WIha. I do believe he was using all longer bits though, slide over to his thread under accessories and he has some good information on there.
Used them today they are nice, they really grab the screws and have showed no signs of damage to the bits themselves.

Where did you buy the terminator bits? They look like a good bit. I’m always breaking phillips bits with my dewalt impact.jimboslice wrote:

He found them at his Home Depot, very ymmv on whether your HD might have them…none of mine do.
K. Thanks Mack. I’ll check any way. I hope they do have them. My impact is the worst on breaking the #3 phillips bits.

Good luck, he got them for a song. I think it was something like 75% off of any retailer I know of…what brand/model of bits are you breaking? I’ve found that the Germans and Czechs seem to make the stronger bits. I get my German/Czech tools from KC Tools or German-hand-tools, after checking Amazon and eBay of course. Bits are almost always significantly cheaper at KC or GHT. We’ve also noticed the Dewalt MaxFit(Home depot) bits are better than the FlexTorq(Lowe’s, Sears), also Milwaukee is not very good. Makita is made in Japan(Every other big name manufacturer bits at HD and Lowe’s is made in China) and appears to be really strong but I haven’t really pushed any Makita bits too hard.
I didnt see any at my HD when I went there yesterday.

Jimbo,
I have debating between Wera & Wiha screwdrivers for some time and for some reason did not even think of these companies making bits. When I read about your Wiha Terminator bits in this thread it finally registered with me that these would probably be better bits than I would find in local B&M stores (I’m not as lucky as you) so I took a look on Ebay. I have many different bits but go through Phillips #2 the most, so when I found this set of 30 Phillips #2 Wiha bits I jumped on it.
While searching for the bits I came across this Wera screwdriver and grabbed it too.
I was choking on the price of the Wera Kraftform Plus set but this Phillips #2 is what I use the most.
I’m going to see how the Wiha bits I got work out. If they don’t hold up I will probably get some Wiha Terminator bits like these which I think is the phillips #2 that you have. Keep us posted on how those terminators work out.
Don’t Impact bits flex some to absorb some of the impact and the regular bits have no flex?

That’s the idea behind impact bits, basically if they don’t flex they break…kind of a wet noodle versus a dry noodle thing.
I have both Wera and Wiha bits, they’re EXTREMELY comparable. I think when it comes to screwdrivers the handle and pricing is going to be the deciding factor. I REALLY like the laser tip, also you’ll find that the handle isn’t as massive as it looks in pictures. I hate to throw another screwdriver/bits into the mix but I also really like Felo, made in Germany and very similar quality. I LOVE the Felo screwdriver handle, it’s a little smaller than Wera but it has better grip and more cushioned…but man, I wish they had the laser tips.

Correct, impact bits have the flex in them to keep them from shattering, you still can strip,

This shows some wear, I got a new impact and striped the crap out of some construction screws. The bit held up pretty well.

What I like about the Wera Kraftform Plus screwdrivers is the hex part at the bottom of the handle where you can use a wrench for extra torque and the solid steel thru the handle. Some of the Kraftform Plus screwdrivers also have a 1/4″ indent at the end of the handle where a 1/4″ socket wrench can be used. I hope the screwdriver I ordered has that 1/4″ indent.
I would like to get the straight slot version to have the ability to hit the end with a hammer on rare occasions. But I have used round shaft screwdrivers for years and with a straight slot screwdriver I use one hand on the shaft to keep the screwdriver centered the hex shaft would drive me nuts.

That bit is tempting. Now that I’m getting 30 of the regular Wiha bits I’ll wait to see they hold up and watch for a deal on the Terminators. There are still other HD’s around I still might get lucky and find the deal you got.
😎

Wera, Wiha and Felo have lines that have the hex bolster and striking cap. I think the only ones with the 1/4″ indent are the yellow handled Weras. This set: http://www.amazon.com/Wera-Chiseldriver-Screwdriver-Set-5018283002/dp/B00A2ARZCY
…but I don’t think it’s guaranteed that those will always have it, on Wera’s website they do NOT have that feature listed in the set’s description.
Felo also has three total series with hex bolsters; one without a striking cap(Black and yellow) and one with striking cap and without grip(red and black), not to be confused with the above link which is grip handle with striking cap(Black and red)
I like how the European manufacturers use a hex shaft, this gives you two different size wrenches you can use on the shaft. If you’re using a ratcheting combination wrench, you can only use the upper hex bolster on the slotted because the closed end won’t fit over the head.

.
I’m guessing that indent was on the older versions. I’m hoping the screwdriver I ordered was from old stock and has that indent.
The Felo website of the 550 series shows what is possibly a indent in the cutaway view. Like Wera Felo makes no mention of the indent. Do you have a 550 series?

I do not, I carry mine in a tool bag and have been trying to get my bag under 25lbs so I went with the 400 series to save weight. I’m planning on picking up some Vessel Impacta striking cap screwdrivers for my car’s tool bag, those auto-turn when you hit them.
I agree it does look like they might have it but it also could just be a larger mounting point for the cap. I was going to mention it but I leaned towards it not being there because there’s no mention of it in the catalog. The same graphic is also on the 200 series(Red and black).
Might want to contact KC tool or Ash from German-hand-tools. BTW, Ash has a 50% off Felo sale until tomorrow(Dec 31st) at noon. See this thread(on another forum) for details: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=309158
