and close up
Not sure of the species but it looks spalted to me.. a fungus in the wood.
Sugar maple is a common wood that this happens too..
looks like you may have nailed it…no pun intended….. I got about 1500BF of some ash awhile ago and it was piled without looking close until I started to get close to the middle of the stack …..
1500 bdft of ash? Damn, how much did you pay for it?

actually nothing………when my sister was building her camp she ordered Eastern Black Larch better known as Tamarack to do her loft railing and they sent her the Black Ash…….she called me to come get it as they just sent the right stuff and they didn’t have a use for it in her camp…..
That wood looks great in projects like that. It’s kinda like a little gem that some of it was spalted because now it’s like you have two different woods to work with!!
come to think of it I seen a TV show about funky growths on the side of trees and when cut up they were worth a fortune…..burl i think….
Exactly. Pretty crazy stuff. The grain pattern in burl is wild and beautiful, that and the rarity is what makes them so expensive.
I wish if I ever had a massive wart or funky defect that I could cut it off and sell it for lots of money!
