Am I Too Old?

Still twiddling my thumbs and waiting for the testing date.

In the meantime, I picked up these:

That’s a great question. I’ve done some very basic residential electrical wiring, and I liked the feeling that I got when everything worked as planned. It’s one trade that I enjoy alongside carpentry. I also feel like I would be able to better support my family by working for the IBEW. I don’t mind it if it’s not a fun job, I’ve worked in shitty environments for a long time. I don’t think of manual labor as fun, but I feel more satisfied doing hands on work.

I don’t have a wiggy. I do however have a multimeter and a ncvt. I’ve never used a wiggy before, it looks like a neon voltage tester or something like that. I’ll have to check it out for myself

I haven’t really used it yet. I think it would come in handy when bending conduit though. It has a little clamp built in for attaching it to the end of conduit.

Punda1991Member since Dec 2013

Yeah it pays great, when your working. Sad but true. 1000 plus guys on the list right now. Just left the meeting couple hours ago.

The wiggy is what we all used many many years ago before multi meters got popular…..didn’t see a tester in the picture (tool belt) and just having fun with the wiggy comment, sort of old school  🙂

Defo not too old. I was in the Army and had a medical discharge at 27 years old. Started university at 29 (2 years left) and started working in engineering at 31. Not too old at all bud. My university courses (computer science) has loads of people in their 40’s. Geez, I even served with a guy from Ohio who joined the Army at 40 years old!

Atlas2000Member since May 2014

Never too old if you want something enough! Wiggy was just a crude (but effective) voltmeter based on increased magnetism at higher voltages. Wiggled due to AC current.

Thank you TIA Crew for all the words of encouragement. I took the test today. I feel fairly confident that I did well, but only time will tell. Now I can sit back, relax and wait for a notice from the IBEW. In the meantime, ill be active on this forum again

Little Update:

Still waiting to hear from the IBEW. In the meantime, I went ahead and applied for the Carpenters Union as well. I took the test (passed with a 100%, something I have never done before lol) and passed the interview. Now I go back for a 3 day screening to weed out the guys that just want a job.

Awesome stuff Nalu, good luck at the OJT, you’ve got this in the bag dude. Remember, with age comes experience and generally speaking a real quality ethic!

Yesterday was the first day of the Carpenters Union preselection screening. We basically carried lumber and buckets of water all day. A few guys quit. Ill try and take more pics today.

Thanks for all the good wishes crew. You guys are the best. The 3 day screening was pretty tough. More than half the guys quit. I made it and ill be getting indentured with the carpenters union next week tuesday. I also found out that i passed the electricians exam. Ill be going in for an interview in december for that.

Here are some pics that i managed to sneek on my lunch

Looks like a really nice training center. The heels on the other hand, DANG BRO! What kind of boots and socks do you have?

BigmikezMember since Jun 2013

OUCH!!! It will all be worth it at the end bro keep up the great work man!!

DR99Member since Nov 2012

I think I would chose electrical over carpentry any day. Both jobs are physical but I do think electrical is easier on the body compared to carpentry they expect you to wrestle 3/4″ 4×8 plywood like nothing 🙂 This is just me thinking though.

The training center is really nice. The wood shop has all top of the line tools. Im talking SawStop and Powermatic stuff.

I have Timberland Pitboss shoes. Ive had them for 4 years and they are broken in well. Its just that we did a lot of running and walking during the training, something that my boots werent designed for. I had cheap socks that escalated the problem.

If anyone has a recommendation for work boots or shoes, im all ears. Im thinking of getting some better socks, been looking at Carhartt. I know that Dan and Eric reviewed some shoes in the past, ill have to find that video again.

Peace out crew

I don’t know how they would be for work but I wear Smartwool and Balega socks for running. They wick moisture well and help me a lot with blisters on high mile runs. I never really thought about them for work boots but the taller smartwools might be nice. Good luck brother!

I am a fan of Carharrt and redwing socks. As far as boots I was a redwing guy for years. I switched to Thorogood boots about 4 yrs ago and they are awesome. Lightweight and tough as nails. Also there is a discount for union members.
