DCT419S1 is the new model number. Hopefully improved as well.
Saw that on the front page, I hope they perfected this time……
I would be scared to try this again. They did not have great luck last time.
im sure it’s been perfected. After the first failure, DeWalt wouldn’t rush to release an updated version before they were 100% certain it would be a success. Just a few poor reviews will cause this version to be a failure as everyone will be skeptical.
hopefully dan and eric or tool crazy/oz/woodstockva can get there hands on it and review for us soon 😉
It looks like CPO is selling them currently. They’re a bit more $$$ than the first version.
REALLY!!?? Wtheck well it seems they feel confident with this one
It’s probably just a firmware update. The additional costs are from the labor to reload all the old units that were never sold. Along with trying to recoup some costs associated with the epic failure of units sold and RTV’d.
do they have a trade in program for the first batch to upgrade? or does the company think oh well……buy this one it will work this time…
I think most people were told to turn in their first gen wall scanners right away. It was removed from stores fairly quickly.
I’m sure people lost a lot of confidence in these. They should be selling for a lot less, considering the epic failure the first time around.
well if I owned Dewalt I would give everybody 1…..

If someone has an old one, call 1800-4-Dewalt and they’ll replace it I’m sure.
Anyone know how well the Milwaukee M12 version works.
You need to take that Milwaukee junk over to another part of the forum. Hahaha. J/k.
It has pretty good reviews and hasn’t been recalled, so it’s probably better than the first DEWALT version.
I like the M12 sub scanner just remember none of these tools are perfect though. People do weird shit in walls 🙂
Maybe it’s me but, I really like to buy one so I went to DeWalts web site and it’s not on there yet, I’m going to wait to see how this one plays out and if it it goes without a hitch I’ll pick one up.
Only place I’ve found them was CPO. I inquired to verify that they are selling the newest one and they have not responded.
The DCT419S1 is now available from Amazon and is listed on DeWalt’s web site.
Deffinetly want one of these beast..reminds of of the scanner in the film aliens for some reason..
It probably doesn’t warranty having an 18v:20v version but itl be a shame if there’s not..
if all else fails a screw will find something eventually…..good or bad…..
Dan just mentioned their’s is being delivered “tomorrow” on his FNTF video which was filmed Monday. So I’m hoping we know a little bit sooner rather than later as to how well it works.
Can’t wait! Oooo…It’s one of those geeky gadgets that nobody actually understands how it works,A device that you just need to buy..
I heard its powered by pixie dust & Dewalt made those little people work overtime just because of the shear demand/interest they were receiving over this mystical device..

I came across a brand new M12 one on the classified adds today for 150$ with case battery and charger.
That’s one thing Dewalt should have rethought. The probably should have moved it to the 20v battery platform. Dewalt isn’t into building 12v tools for the most part now.
They could dual volt it like Panasonic do,but just on tools like the inspection camera and stud detector…
They should have a suggestion box on there site they would make a killing..
It made sense earlier when Dewalt was really into their 12v line, but now the tools are not really being updated anymore as Dewalt says multiple times that there isn’t enough interest. I think Milwaukee with the she shear volume of 12v was going to be a tough nut to crack. I really love the concept of 12v tool with some balls. My only complaint is the fact that the M12 drills are a tad large and heavy. They should offer a more compact size like Dewalt. Also is your finger healing up well Frain?
Yeah it’s alright to be honest Dr99,still hurts but thats to be expected, managing to get back to work Monday, won’t be able to get back to joinery so there letting me just take it easy driving about dropping stuff off for the lads on site and stuff,I’m happy as il still be bringing a wage in…
Seems like they have a fairly decent 12V lineup to me.

We all have to admit it love it or hate it Milwaukee has a better 12 volt line.
Talked to a Dewalt rep at Lowes today. Asked if she had the opportunity to try the scanner and if she thought it was any better. Let’s just say I’m not all warm and fuzzy. Disappointed to say the least.
Really Rick what did she say?

I’ll second that, M18 isn’t that bad either…..
Lets face it when is a woman ever going to get passionate about a tools..There a different breed! Haha..
Im reserving judgment till the reviews start pouring out…

I have to say the 20V max is usually cheaper but the M18 has better selection on brushless, hopefully that changes soon.

She didn’t say much.
She was hesitant as if she was choosing her words VERY CAREFULLY.
She emphasized how you have to pre-scan the wall first and that there are so many unknowns as to how that wall could have been assembled.
Now, she did tell me that the cost increase is due to new parts. So, maybe upgraded sensory parts?
I got the new scanner in the mail last week. It asks you what type of wall you’ll be scanning (Residential Wood/Commercial Metal) it helps with the accuracy. It also does a better job of explaining what you may be finding behind the wall. It may show a wood stud and show a magnet if there may be a nail plate or screw. Plastic could be a low voltage wire, PVC, or plastic electrical box. Ferrous and Non Ferrous metals still show up. Still has the electric symbol if it finds a live wire.
Anyway, I scanned my wall and it seemed to work pretty well.

Did you have any experience with the first version?
It sounds like you are leaning towards recommending the product?

lol…..my wife and I were in HD the other day and I spotted the Milwaukee rep about a half an isle away I told my wife to go ask him when the M18 5.0 battery will be on the shelves………so she goes right up to the guy and asks……I was at the check out by then and asked her what he say? she says the guy just said soon…….so I said what is the peak RPM of the 7 1/4″ Fuel circular saw and he…..paused and said I will have to check that……so then she says oh…….so I guess soon for the first answer was a I don’t know answer…….she says the rep just looked at her funny as she walked away……my point is my wife is passionate about tools because I am…….
I need to see a tool fight between the dewalt and Milwaukee. I have bought into the m12 line deeply.

I did, my old one may have been even worse than the ones to hit the shelves initially, because it was given to me before it’s release.
If you need to see what is behind a wall I would recommend it. If you’re just looking for wood studs to hang something it is probably a little over kill. I’d also go into it knowing that it’s not going to be full proof. If it detects plastic, it may be a pipe, electrical box, or low voltage/no voltage wire. You need to scan multiple times (vertically/horizontally below/above) if you’re really trying to get an idea of what is in there if you run into something that you’re not sure what it is.
I’m still not sold on this one. I’ll will just have to see what the Tool Box buzz has to say. They did call the older model Tool of the year when it first came out.
I finally dove in and ordered one. It will be delivered tomorrow based on shipment tracking. We shall see. I’m not seeing very many reviews or any feedback anywhere so I’m not sure if these just aren’t selling due to the previous failure or if people aren’t providing feedback.
Maybe the old adage, “no news is good news” will apply?
PS: I ordered from ToolNut and I have to say, I’m not overly impressed. Website says “ships within 24 hours.” It took almost 4 days I believe. And the shipping speed was practically pony express. If I recall correctly, it will take 8 days to arrive from shipping date.
I had the same problem Ricky. I ordered some clamps from toolnut and not only did they forget to ship 2 clamps, it took quite a while getting here. I understand that New York to Houston is a trek but 8 days seems a bit long.
