After giving it some thought, I might look for an older Craftsman air compressor, preferably oil lubed, might consider oil less. It seems like from what people say the older Craftsman air compressors are a lot better than the current ones. Anybody know much about the older ones as far as performance and reliability? Also, are the older oil less craftsman compressors decent? And does anybody know a good place to look for these? I know to look on local craigslist, garage sales, classified, possible estate sales, anywhere else? Thanks
They recalled a bunch of the older Craftsman air compressors because they could catch fire. I think it might be limited to the oil less models but don’t know for sure.
Depending on the size of the general area you live in, Craigslist is your friend when shopping for an air compressor.
I had an old 5 gallon Craftsman that we abused for years. I gave it to my uncle several years ago and he’s still using it. Campbell Hausfield made decent compressors at one time.
What’s your max budget? We can find something.
TIA needs to get some other companies to send some Air compressors to review. They only have had mostly compact portable units to review 5 gal tank size or less. I think he had another post about air compressors he was considering I don’t know where it went though. Also you might want to consider registering for the forum also.
FWIW I have an old Craftsman air compressor handed down to me from my grandfather. I’m not even sure of the age but he rebuilt it in the 70’s. I replaced the rusted out tank 2 years ago and I am still using it as my only compressor! It’s a 2 cylinder cast iron oil bath and is FAR too old to be in the oil less era, but a very solid compressor none the less. My Mother in law has a Craftsman oil less that is OK. I’ve been around a few oil less compressors of various brands and personally I feel that they are all cheap! But to each his own, I’m sure some people love them!
IIRC, Craftsman, Kobalt, and maybe Husky are all OEM’d by the same outfit. I’m wanting to say CH, but that may not be right.
