I’m starting my apprenticeship with a commercial company. I have 2000$ in grant money and have picked out some tools. I was wondering if I should get an open top bag, a belt, or a backpack for my tools? If so which one? They need to be able to fit an m18 impact and a few batteries

The choice of tool bag, belt, backpack greatly depends on your individual needs. Factors such as the convenience of a backpack, the ease of a rolling hard plastic toolbox, or flexibility of a soft tote bag. More than likely you’ll require several different bags for the variety of work you do. Remember, Husky, Milwaukee, Klein all make good bags, but brands like Veto more expensive but last a lot longer.
