I’ve been working almost a full year fixing up the top floor apartment. There are wooden countertops in the kitchen. I replaced the island butchers block, but the counter tops I kept and sanded down then stained, and used minwax poly-oil hybrid semi gloss I put 5-7 coats on because I really wanted it smooth.
And the thing the frustrates me most is it looked great for months. I don’t know how it could look so good for so long. Have NO ONE USE, the countertops, because I was still fixing up the rest of the apartment. And this happens??
I did the poly towards the beginning of all repairs. so about 5 months ago. It came out looking great. But I just noticed today, this friggin streak!!! the poly is bumping up or something. WHAT!?!?
- Can someone please explain what is happening?
- Will it get worse?
- What can I do to fix it?
Something similar happened where the backsplash meet the countertop, but it’s not nearly as noticeable so I don’t care as much. I put pictures of both below
The last photo is the full kitchen just so you can see, this did not happen anywhere else. Just on the spot right above the dishwasher. I’m so angry.

Wow, that looks amazing, nice job. Yes, it sucks when you spend so much time and things look great only for one small issue. I wish I knew more and could help, but not sure why that happened. The only thing I could think of is the bottom layer wasn’t fully cured or maybe the wood had moister and that started coming through or if the wood had a small split and as the poly penetrated the cracked area, maybe air escaped and was trapped underneath.
Wish I had a better answer but I am curious to see what causes that.
Yeah unfortunately I think moisture came through. The place got very humid for about 2 months. I’m talking 77% humidity. I should have gotten a dehumidifier sooner. I didn’t think humidity could do permanent damage like that.
