G’day all,
I’ve been doing some more delicate woodwork lately, and my Record No. 6 engineers vice just isn’t the right tool for the job. Its like the picture shown, and I think these have a replaceable jaw front?
Is there a good way to add timber to the jaws to protect my work (as needed), or should I just buy a woodworkers vice?
something like this? http://audel.com.au/irwin-record-tv175b-woodcraft-vice-175mm/
If I’m going to get a second vice, i like the idea of an underbench mounted one ….
If you are going to spend the money on a wood workers vice I would get one bigger than the Irwin it just looks tiny. Check around your local version of craiglist or ebay. for an older one. I think vices fall into the category they don’t make them like they used to, or if you do find one made like they used to they cost a ton of cash.
I wouldn’t buy a new one, just check craigslist for a good yost one. Yost vises are top of the line. I don’t know about the woodworking jaws but you could just make a cover for that.
wow thats impressive. very handy but might take up a little too much of my little shed space.
really love the idea of a quick clamping vice now …
You should be able to buy/make jaw liners. If the dogs are removable you may want to just make them. If you do go for a second vice I would go for the end or face varieties, the screw mechanism is mounted under the bench.
