I’m building a deck with a 18′ ledger board section but they are not selling 2×8 in 20′ sections so I’m going to need to splice at the least a 16′ and a smaller section. What is the code approved way to join two boards into one ledger board run? Is it a scarf joint or just a butt joint?
Butt joints are fine.
Flashing and fasteners are much more important considerations.

I think that butt joint will fit you better. It’s lasting and will last you for long. Don’t worry about not having right size, it happens.
