Have had the Dewalt 20 v max xr brushless string trimmer for 10 months, works well, just used it for 30 min, then charged battery, cleaned the head etc, restrung it and then placed battery back on and then pulling the throttle the head rotates 1 cm one way the bounces back the other way and stops. battery is full power. no grass in head etc. when pulling throttle, you can hear the head click.
Any thoughts?
Most likely one of the magnets inside the motor has broken apart. Mine was doing the same thing and that was the problem.
Just purchased a DCST922b, and the same thing….
Out of the box for 30min, made it 2 feet in the grass and it quit. Clicking sound in the head, and motor tries to turn about 1cm and stops…. Bummer!
Is it fixable
Same issue with my Dewalt String Trimmer model DCST922. Had it working for a year and only used it 4 times but the head stopped turning. I saw a small whiff of smoke after it stopped. I have blown out the head, changed batteries but still not working. I am very disappointed with this DeWalt tool. They are usually better that this and the tool is not cheap.
what are my options?
This may be of help but in my case it applies to the DCM561 strimmer…….. ( 18V XR Brushless)
Many people are reporting the same problem that I had in that you try to use the strimmer ( good battery etc) and the motor just kicks slightly but does not spin. I was going to bin it but decided to ‘waste’ a few hours taking it apart…..
Battery taken off !
I could find no obvious signs of burning or damage at the motor head so decided to take the handle apart.
Carefully laid on its LHS there are about a dozen Torx head screw to remove from the RHS casing.
The Dewalt label on the base stops the case separating but it CAN be unfolded through 180′ without removing the label in order to gain access.
Be careful not to let switches / levers / etc come loose and take a Pic in case !!
Examine the 6 plastic wire connectors and in particular the one joining the heavy blue wire where it emerges from the main tube. This may have signs of burning ( but not always ). Disconnect each of the connectors in turn – you may find that 5 of them separate easily but the 6th ( on the blue wire ) will not. This was the case with mine i.e. the plastic had melted and fused together. Used electrical snips the cut the plastic connector apart and lo and behold the metal contacts inside were fried !!
Removed debris from wires and used another connector ( screw type ) to join the wires, insulated it, reassemble with a few screws to test…
Strimmer works fine again !!!
Hate to think how many of these are getting binned because of this simple fault !!!
Hope this helps others…….
