Tree trimming sawzall

Who here uses a sawzaw for light tree cutting. I do all the time. I have a nice Stihl saw but for small stuff the fuel is quicker an easier. I also think it’s a lot safer.

The branches got to about 2 or maybe 3 inches at the biggest point.

All the time dude so easy I’ve even used a hackzall for pruning

I’ve been known to use one of my Hackzalls to lightly prune out a bank fishing spot in the past, but anything that would require my Fuel Sawzall, I’ll just fire up one of my Husqvarnas. As of late, I just don’t get enough 2-stroke in my life.

To be honest I rarely use a sawzall for anything but brush and trees

Great for branches and quite good on treated lumber, don’t go all aggressive demo mode with em and you can get some good life outta em.

Right now a couple Bosch ones, I’ve used other brands with good results too, I don’t get em very often as I seem to get em to last quite well.  I’m not too picky which brand I get generally my criteria is availability and price.

Supposedly, the diablo pruning blades are a very worthy contender …. if i had need of them, maybe this summer i’ll rent a lift and prune some dead stuff out of my maple trees.

I picked up a set of Milwaukee pruning and they work great. Used it to cut a coniferous tree…. during sunset. Was dark by the time I cleaned up the branches. May have been a pine or spruce. Not a hard wood by any means but it cut well.

I considered a Diablo pruning but it was alot more expensive than the Milwaukee pruning.

Much more efficient on green lumber than an axe blade

I don’t cut green wood often mostly dead dry stuff

BMack37Member since Sep 2015

I use the Diablo pruning blades all the time. I’ve never come across a branch I can’t take down. I’ve even cut a 8 foot tall palm tree down, including cutting the trunk in several pieces, it was very much alive too.

Conductor562Member since Nov 2011

I’ve trimmed a lot of branches with a Sawzall. Took down a whole tree and cut it up in my brothers yard with one, but I do it rarely because I’m always looking for a good excuse to play with my chainsaw

To be honest I’ve never used an ax, I don’t have the convenience of a HD near by, so my blade buys are grab and go at Lowe’s or Menards, but comparing a standard demo blade to a pruning is night and day, there’s a reason companies make pruners.

rfwjrMember since Jul 2014

I use my recip saw  to trim trees also.

Night and day, pruning is like a hot knife through butter the ax blade will take five to ten times longer. At least on live branches.

especially with something like this…

^This^

Even a cheap pruner will outperform the best demo blade on live trees.

Dead or not there’s still tons of moisture in a tree limb, the teeth clear the clips out much better than a demo blade

A pruning blade would be ideal for this task. Pruning blades are a lot quicker. Much more aggressive cut. Ime pretty sure the kerf is thinner, but not sure.

The Millwakee axe blades are great for there purpose.

The blade shown is a avanti pro demolition blade. Its not necisarly for pruning but works. Bought them on clearance at homedepot. Not my first choice for blades but the price was next to nothing.

FoneguyMember since Mar 2016

I took down a small oak yesterday along with a giant branch using my DEWALT 20v sawzall and a black and decker “the ugly” blade. One blade, 2 4ah batteries and 2 hours…… No sweat ….. not literally cuz it was hot……

JustenGladMember since May 2020

i used tree trimming experts to remove the oak stump in my garden. They’d done their job really well and remove it within a day.

winglessMember since Nov 2017

There are some palm trees on my properties where the Super Sawzall is the most appropriate tool for maintaining those trees. I use a 9″ blade in those instances.

fm2176Member since Feb 2017

I lucked out and found a bunch of Diablo 9″ pruning blades on clearance a few years ago.  I’ve used a couple since then for small limbs and trees, albeit with my Gen 1 Fuel Sawzall.  When I retire next year and finally sort/organize my expendables (blades, bits, etc.), hardware, and tools, I’ll probably find little need to purchase anything else.

Eric – TIAMember since Jan 2010

I am the same way.  I have blades all over the place.  Once I have time and can organize mine, I can probably open up a blade shop.

winglessMember since Nov 2017

All of my power tools have a dedicated tool box (or bag) and all the associated accessories (blades / bits / etc.) are stored w/ the tool.

All my tools are stored in one place, all my hardware and supplies are stored in a different place.

It frequently looks like a mess to others, but I can “always” put my hands onto the required stuff when needed.

For example, last week I needed an electric motor brush. I faintly recalled having a spare from a decade prior. I put my hands onto that part and fixed my motor in short order.

Eric – TIAMember since Jan 2010

Wish I could get organized.  I have been working on my house for the past 3 years and it seems like all my tools and accessories are everywhere.

winglessMember since Nov 2017

Zero idea on when is best to prune.

Yes, I use both my Super Sawzall or my OMT for cutting trees and shrubs.

winglessMember since Nov 2017

My hand-held compound action lopping pruner and my pole pruner, w/ both a saw, a knife and a pruner are also used for pruning trees.

These are cut per my schedule, not the tree’s growth cycle preference.

Eric – TIAMember since Jan 2010

Agree, not sure about timing but I have a pruning blade and use my Sawzall.
