Dust Collector upgrade Progress…..

dust control upgrade, getting there removed hose from blower to barrel to be direct. ordering a canister and when that gets here then I will raise the main collector to same height as blower to shorten or remove that hose as well. Where the collector is I have a height issue as it is on a raised platform so ceiling height is reduced it is not a big deal other than the collector bag is at it’s limit but a canister replacement is almost 12″ shorter To empty barrel collar directly under blower is loosened off and slips down giving room to move barrel out. I’ll will update soon

Looks good so far !!

Wow, super cool stuff Comp. how is the noise level with this going?

rrmccabeMember since Jan 2017

What is the unit on the barrel?  Is that some sore of Thien baffle or something?

comp56Member since Sep 2014

@chrisk stock is 66DB however it seems to be quieter by adding the separator and no hose between that and the blower.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

it fits perfect on a 55 gallon drum

I will say I had the typical 6.5hp shop vac with a dust deputy and was running it to my table saw hose was 2.5″ increased to the 4″ port on table saw…….while I was changing everything over I looked in the bottom of table saw and there was obviously some saw dust built up in the far corners. When I ran this new set up it cleaned it all up. then again I went from 2.5″ hose @185 CFM to 5″ hose reduced to 4″ hose @1200+CFM with the separator I filled 2 5 gallon pails of saw dust to test and the new dust collector catch bag (the clear see thru bag) had next to nothing in it so in saying that I would guess 98%+ was caught in the separator like it was suppose to. This is good news as I have a window right next to the collector and in the summer months I will pipe it directly outside by passing the filter completely the window is right against a rock garden with some shrubs and stuff so having a pipe go into the little garden no one will even see it. I would do this all year but I don’t want to have make up warm air but summer I won’t mind to have it cooler the shop will be really clean if everything is gone outside……

do you mean this

[External image (i274.photobucket.com), not copied]

or above that? if so it is the blower from dust collector connected directly

Yes that. Was not sure what it was. I am guessing that is some store of Thein design. Pulls the bulk of your chips out before it gets to the actual dust collector.

yes that is exactly what it is designed to do and it does it very well in fact probably about 99% as good as a $250 cyclone separator for a fraction of the price. I plan on making my own metal cyclone but need to wait until weather gets better as I can only weld outside for obvious reasons in a basement shop

Time for a lean to of sorts ha

Looking good and I really want to setup a cyclone separator too, and I think I’ll build an enclosure outside and pipe it through the shop wall, keep the noise outside while gaining some extra room! Maybe.

rrmccabeMember since Jan 2017

Yea it would be great to get the noise and unit outside but I would have an issue with pumping all my heat outside. Not sure how significant it is but have to think you would have to add fresh are and the heat lost where I live would be significant.

Well that’s one advantage of not heating the shop in the winter lol…. aw now I made myself sad….Maybe one day though….

Or maybe I’ll seal the enclosure with proper insulation, open the wall up a little, and add a duct board air return duct with opening at opposite ends to keep the sound down..

Sorry comp didn’t mean to hijack this, I like the cost savings method you’re going to for this and know I really want to do so as well..

I probably could dust it outside and bypass canister filter but it would take warm air out of the basement for sure not sure it would be enough to worry after all I am in a fully insulated basement however the thermostat is on the next level up so it may be warm up there but not in basement. I will try it in the spring or when the furnace stops kicking on. I’m not worried about the sound it isn’t that bad far less noisy compared to a shop vac…..more of a humming rumble compared to a screaming box. you can actually talk over it quite easily whereas the shop vac it’s like shut that %$^#in thing off I can’t hear you….lol

comp56Member since Sep 2014

In the process of upgrading my shop to a 2hp dust collector I also added a magnetic floor collector, I can now sweep everything into the collecting opening. Now this is not new by no means but what I did was I added a metal strip along the floor opening and attached strong magnets I re purposed from old computer hard drives. Now if any screws are within the saw dust/dirt swept up they will be caught by the strip. here is a short video of it in action, I purposely put 4 screws in the pile for the test. It worked great kinda hard to hold camera and sweep at the same time but you get the idea…..  so now I can sweep up and save money on screws and they probably have a 90% chance of not getting sucked up into the dust collector and easily recovered

rrmccabeMember since Jan 2017

Looks like the magnets worked great.

Looking forward to a real dust collection someday so I can do the same.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

ya they seem to be powerful enough, however the nice thing about having a separator before the collector also helps as in if they do get sucked up they are heavy enough to drop before they go through the impeller of the blower so this is just an added step plus far easier to recover by just pulling them off the strip.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

so continuing on with dust collection here is my plan to make a sliding 3 port sliding manifold, 3 hose lines will be attached on the bottom side and the main inlet port will slide to anyone of the 3 ports without removing any hoses. As you see I made the track to receive a plate wider than the top to keep it locked in place with some careful calculations the lexan will slide with a nice tight fit for a better seal. It only has 3 places as the hose will cover one hole at any given time I will never have to close off all 3 holes…. next to rout out the 3 holes then make the matching top plate.

That looks like it will work great. You lost me with the first picture and was not grasping the sliding hose.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

all hooked up, not pretty but cheap and effective. If I do all this again I will buy better hose this stuff is stiff as board hard to move around, then again probably more durable……

Think you will need to pin that moveable hose in place or suction will hold it?

actually no that is why I made sure it fit tight, slight resistance when moving but stays in place due to the fit plus I wanted it that way I also glued a O-ring jobby on the backside which made it tighter yet so ya works good

thanks Jimbo,

Update again….

well seeings I have a completely black 55 gallon drum that when it is full it will be a bit of work to empty.

So I added a window on the side so I can see where the level is, the top of the little window sits at the 40 gallon mark as I really don’t want this to completely fill to the top. now I will be able to see when it gets close to the top of the window the barrel should be emptied. I glued 2 pieces of lexan together one a little larger than the other, I then glued the piece in the opening I did with a dremel. I then braced it from the inside very tight so I could drill for these little one way clips I have. I then left the brace in place and siliconed all the way around. These black clips are tough they hold more than they look like they will hold. I got 2 cases of these things when they closed the Target store down in our city, I’m guessing there is 5000 in each case so I figured I better start using them…..lol

Anyone seen Jay Bates new dust collection? He used pvc pipe as his tubing. Seemed like he had good suction. Especially at his miter setup.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

after deleting the thread I got my answer so this what I did. I got a wireless remote for my dust collector, rated at 15A it works flawless from across the street about 90 ft away. no need to spend the almost $100 for the ” dust collector remote ” this cost $22

I have and he has covered a few of different styles, good info for sure, however from the looks of things he has bought or has been given products that are out of my budget or willing to spend. I;m happy with my set up so far for hundreds of dollars not thousands of dollars.

I’d be hesitant to use PVC, the static could cause issues.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

it is strongly recommended to run ground wire wrapped around any PVC. I personally have seen some huge set ups in the saw mill for removing chips, they ran huge 14″ PVC piping for about 3 weeks and removed it all due fire hazards. fine saw dust can be as bad as dynamite when ignited from sparks. our shop used to make these huge chip bins and cyclones for saw mills. Whenever they needed repairing they use to empty them and blow them out and spray them down for some times 2 days before the welders could start welding depending how big they were…….

rrmccabeMember since Jan 2017

I will more than likely use PVC on mine but plan to have small metal plates on the inside attached with carriage bolts. Then will run wire externally and attach to all those.  I am doing something similar on my Festool dust extractor now.  I know a lot of guys run a ground wire on exterior only but would like to give it a little help.

Jay Bates new system is mostly 6″.  I don’t want that much 6″ around my shop. If needed I will run the first few feet out of 6″ but will split off to 4″ and all my drops will be 4″ for sure.

KnarlyCarlMember since Jan 2016

That’s incredible comp, think about the poor couple of guys that figured out static electricity the hard way first time it became known…

Jay claims it was the cheapest he could get.

I thought he mentioned he didn’t have to worry about it. Maybe even gave the humid climate as his reasoning.

on to another mod for 4″ duct work on yet another shop tool,

the Ridgid oscillating sander seems to be a pretty common, I’ve had mine for about 3 years and the biggest gripe i have is the stock dust collection. I figured it was time to try something with it, don’t get me wrong it has paid for itself 3 times over so i’m not worried about the warranty on it. Here is a video of what I did, I’m happy with the results it sucks way better than before………

FoneguyMember since Mar 2016

Well done …… you making me want an upgrade to my Dust collector (shop vac)

rrmccabeMember since Jan 2017

Awesome. I have the same sander and it works great.  My dust collection is currently “fair” but I know if I lay the hose on the top of table it works perfect. So I plan to modify mine with a flat nozzle that attaches to left side of table.

Great mod !

comp56Member since Sep 2014

Ya I was going to just put a hose near end of sandering belt post and that would have worked bit I didnt want it in the way

rrmccabeMember since Jan 2017

It would have to be adjustable and always messing with it when you changed to spindle mode.  This gives you the benefit of 4″ too. Mine is bench mounted on a slide in a spot I will never be able to run 4″ anyway. My miter saw and sander will always be connected to the Festool dust extractor.

comp56Member since Sep 2014

Yes my milwaukee 12″ miter saw had pretty good dust control the way it was bit I modded it to go straight into a 4″ hose no bends and added about an inch and a half of flexible plastic to lower the factory deflectors so it really just pulls everything very well probably the best improvement I got so far

well it’s been awhile since I posted some stuff I have been doing to the dust collector, this time a clear plastic bag upgrade,

I came across a 15 gallon white barrel, it was big enough coupled with the separator I have inline that it will not fill all that quickly. I figure this barrel will need emptying once for every 6 or 8 times the separator needs emptying. In my small one man shop that translates to probably 5 or 6 times a year….
I just made the bottom from 3/4″ plywood I had and made a tight fit in the bottom of the dust collector housing, I then offset a hole again tight fit for the barrel. I positioned the opening just inches after the deflector inside the housing so anything coming in will have the most opening coming off the ramp and will drop instead of centering it. I made the bottom plywood sealed and screwed to housing but barrel is only tight fit with foil tape. I’d rather replace the 4 feet of foil tape a few times a year then buy bags. by the way I tested the tight fit of the barrel and foil tape by filling it with water to see how much it would hold before it let go…..and surprisingly it was a little over half So in saying that when it gets half full of fine saw dust it won’t be anywhere near the weight of water. (did the water test before assembly) Sorry for the poor quality pics I almost forgot to take them…..
I put a light in behind the white barrel so I could see it’s level.
all sealed up and it works good…….no more bags no more holes… here is a short video ….
