I wanted to start a general electrical questions thread for anything electrical around the house. A place where you can ask anything in regards to electrical about your home. If it has anything to do with specific code for your area, please include that info but this is probably not the best place …. But can’t hurt to ask.
I thought I would start off with a tricky one. since I’m in the process of insulating and drywalling my garage this is the perfect time to do something like this. I always have an extension cord plugged in at the top of my garage and run it all the way through to get outside for w/e I am using. Mostly table Saul out on the driveway or shop vac etc. below is a picture of a tiny space I have between my two garage doors the perfect spot for an outlet …but it’s also not perfect and the fact that it could get wet if the garage is open.
What do I do… install a GFIC right there and put inside a waterproof case? Run the receptacle above the garage doors or would not get wet? Install an additional outlet towards the ground (above 18 inches) 6 to 8 feet in the garage along the closest wall to the exit?? For better suggestions…

Picture???
I like your idea of a GFCI in a weather proof box

I second the weatherproof box. Or what about a retractable mounted above and in between the doors. The pic will help
Sorry. Pic updated

Yeah that’s pretty typical.
I would actually want a receptacle on the outside as well as the inside since you’re doing one anyways

@KnarlyCarl what do u recommend? Just regular blue 1 gang box for the inside or something protected on both sides?
That’s an odd spot between the two doors for an outside receptacle I’d atleast cut in the box so it’s not sticking out if u do that. you can still put a flat weatherproof cover on it instead of a bubble cover
i don’t know what you have on the outside of the garage but if you have vinyl siding or something similar check out Arlington inbox options to install a out side box part# DBVR141W it comes in white but can be painted. They are very nice low profile boxes that also can have a cord plugged in and still be water proof I use them all the time just make sure you install a GFCI outlet.

I wouldn’t see a reason to give the inside box any special treatment besides gfci, the outside one would need a weatherproof cover. Just run both receptacles on the same circuit.
..
Anybody have an automatic whole house generator?
