You can take your Green Egg, your expensive Napoleon grills or whatever you cook food with and toss it away. All those other products are child’s play. When it comes to cooking, Traeger is the way to go. In fact, you don’t even have to read this review as I am sure people will think I work for Traeger because I give it such high praise. But for those who want to read, let’s jump into the Traeger Pro 780 Review.
Traeger Pro 780 Review Overview
I am one of those guys who believe in a fair transaction. I give a company money and in return, I want a good product that last, makes my life easier and better. I don’t want throw away products. I am tired of gimmicks and junk.
So when you hear me on Instagram, this article or our other channels praising Traeger, you know why. The reason I praise Traeger is that they over-deliver on all the aspects I mentioned above and what I want in a product.
I will get into price down below but this is a steal of a deal and there aren’t too many times in life I ever feel like I underpaid for a product but this is one of those rare gems.
No, I don’t work for Traeger. It’s a product I love and believe in.
Traeger Pro 780 Review Features
The Traeger Pro 780 has 780 sq. in. of cooking capacity which is equivalent to 34 burgers or 6 racks of ribs or 6 chickens or countless other food items. The grill measures 49″W x 27″D x 55″H with a barrel width of 30.
The grill features a brushless direct-drive motor.
The Traeger features a 2 tier rack system to maximize cooking space. The main grill grate is 30″ x 19″ while the top grate is 30″ by 9″.
The grill uses porcelain grates which are extremely easy to remove and clean.
The 18 lb hopper is located on the right side of the grill.
One of the coolest features is the Pro D2 Controller. This is where the magic starts. The screen and navigation are simple and easy to navigate.
Once you turn on the screen, it cycles through the logo. Once the cycle is over, you can use the dial, set your temp and push the ignite button to start the grill. Yes, it’s that easy. You can set it up to 450 degrees for the max temp. You can also control your probe and more through this menu system.
One of the best features is the WIFI ability. You want to talk about making life easier, this app will do just that. Once you connect the grill to your home network, you can use your Traeger app to control the grill. As you can see above, this is what it looks like. I was cooking some meat with a probe. I was able to set the timer, see the probe temp and see the temp of the grill. Here is what’s great. If I need to turn down the heat or turn it up, I can do it all from my phone. Heck, it will even alert me when the food is done. How cool is that?
As noted above, the hopper has an 18 lb capacity. There is a large screen to help stop large clumps so they don’t get stuck in the auger. I haven’t seen any large clumps but I guess if stuff gets wet because you leave the top open, I can see it happening.
While some might not care about the wheels, they are very important to me. I live in a smaller residential lot where the houses are a little close together. So I have to have my grill in the driveway. However so is my basketball net, my kid’s hockey net and more. So I have to move my grill all the time so the kids can play.
I am constantly moving the grill around and the one thing that really stands out is how nice it will move over the occasional rock, the cracks I have in the driveway and more. I have had other grills where the wheels are junk and it’s a pain to move around. Again Traeger doesn’t cut any corners with quality.
I would suggest getting a cover for your grill. This was one of the most surprising things to me, the quality. I am used to having covers that are thin, hard to work with, get snagged and ripped. The Traeger cover is anything but. The cover is thick, built with quality in mind and is extremely easy to put on and take off, even in the winter when other covers get hard. I have to give it to the team at Traeger, they thought of everything and didn’t cut corners.
Traeger sells a bunch of different rubs and sauces which are actually really good. Again they didn’t go cheap on anything. Now I am not a fan of the BBQ sauce as it tastes more tomato base and I like the sweater sauces like Sweet Baby Rays but I understand the authentic styles and more, it’s just not for me. Their other sauces and all the rubs are great. I ended up buying all the rubs and sauces and use them all the time.
Traeger Pro 780 Review Performance
Right out of the box, you do have to do some assembly, no worries. The directions are easy but give yourself a little bit of time. Not sure how long because I grabbed a beer and then got sidetracked with other things.
While building the grill, you will notice one thing, the quality. They didn’t cheap out on anything. Not the lid, not the wheels, not the racks. Traeger went all out to make this grill the best of the best.
I have cooked so much food with this grill and each and every time, it amazes me with the taste and ease. I have done everything from Ritz crackers and cheese (which is amazing) to making ice cubes for Burbon. I don’t even drink bourbon but had to try smoked ice and the ice is amazing. I have done steak, ribs, roasts, and soups. There is not one thing I can complain about. Taste is always amazing. The only thing that really doesn’t work is meat that has a casing around them such as hot dogs. It still will cook them but doesn’t soak up any smoke flavor, however, I could be doing something wrong.
Talk about support, Trager has an app that really helps a user, not just a gimmick. They have tons of recipes that allow you to easily follow along. The recipes are well laid out which tell you what wood to use, cooking time, prep time and easy to follow directions, including all ingredients.
Heck, it will even start your grill and set the temp with a push of the button. Speaking of the app, the WiFIRE technology that hooks up to the grill and your phone is amazing. I first thought it was a gimmick but now I don’t know what I would do without it. I can sit inside or at my kid’s games and see the temp, make changes and more. Pair that with the probe and you can’t go wrong.
If you follow the recipes, you can be confident that all your creations will come out perfect. They come out juicy, tasting like a million bucks.
Now one thing that might stand out is the hopper size. The Pro780 has an 18 lb pellet capacity but yet Traeger sells 20 lb bags of pellets. You would think the capacity would match the bag size, However, there is a twist to this. The very first time you fill up, yes, you will have extra pellets because it doesn’t all fit. From there on, you are really never running the hopper empty. I am always filling up. So for me, I bought a bunch of Home Depot 5 gallon buckets, wrote the type of wood on the top and use that for overflow.
Traeger Pro 780 Review Value
The grill is priced at $999 on Amazon. Yes, it’s a lot of money to drop and one I would be nervous not knowing anything about. However, this Traeger is worth every penny, if not more. Talk about a solid grill that is easy to use and makes your life easier, plus makes incredible food, it’s a steal and no brainer.
Traeger Pro 780 Review Final Thoughts
I know I sound like a Traeger salesman but I don’t work for them. This is one of those products I absolutely love and my favorite product I own. This is a solid grill that doesn’t cut any corners, backed by an incredible online recipe book that will even start my grill. Heck, even the cover is thick, easy to put on and take off, which I have never seen before in a cover. I am busy with two kids and all their sports so I don’t have time to sit around and watch my food cook, I absolutely love the wifi option. Yes at first I thought it was just a gimmick but know I don’t know what I would do without.
If you want the best-tasting food with a grill that will last a lifetime, while making your life easier, the Traeger is a no brainer. Take about hitting a home run, Traeger hit a Grand Slam.
I know a lot of you have been watching the Instagram stories and have asked about the tailgate version. This review is for the Pro780. I am sure the tailgate version is just as amazing but let me know you if you have any feedback.
Where can I see one of these in operation? Preferably in the “smoking” mode.
We are in the process of creating a review for YouTube so we will have it all on there
